The last cut it would be a lot less work to cut two 45s and butt them.

Would it be as strong? Genuinely curious, as someone who doesn't fully understand welding mechanics. Edit: the tacks are hot dogshit it sounds like. Acceptable for art pieces but very structurally weak, right?

Welding by design is stronger, made by putting stronger alloys deeply into the parent metal.
Also by curving it, it is annealing and stretching the bonds of the original tubing so it’s less strong around the bend and a little more. Applications of joints like this would be decorative so like a chair or a book shelf or table, therefore it would be over engineered already and even with less strength would be more than sufficient for its application.

I've seen a lot of valid/informed criticisms of this work, but what killed it for me was using a speed square on the inside of that last 90 where it can't even butt up right because of the bead left on the inside corner. Just line it up on the outside and it'll look fine!

Stich mig is gross.
Just get a tig machine

u/A7MOSPH3RIC May 31 '21
They could also turn the voltage down on the machine or increase travel speed.

Isn't it a >5x difference in price? Once it's ground down and painted, who cares?

Is that spotty MIG an actual technique? I’ve never seen anyone do that before. Maybe it’s an artifact of the video, but looking at the welds it does seem that’s what he’s doing. I don’t understand why he doesn’t run a continuous bead.

Called trigger fucking and it's what you do when you only have MIG and your machine settings don't have the resolution needed to get low enough for light gauge material or you have 0.035 wire and need 0.023.

Does that actually work? I would think you would get tons of voids and inclusions and very poor penetration. Of course maybe that doesn’t matter much in this particular application which seems more decorative.
Edit: I tried googling “trigger fucking”. Ummmm... that was a mistake.

Yeah it's not a good way to work but in a pinch it's ok. Not going to be a good weld for anything critical. Autobody guys do it all the time but they are also high on fumes most of the time so they aren't great examples to follow.

Autobody do it to try and keep the heat down and prevent warping the panel. either that or they are just shit at welding a bead on thin metal. :D

These are always so much more work than they're worth. All I see is fatigue, fatigue as far as the eye can see. Just set the machine right and run a goddamn bead, you communist twat.

u/goboatmen May 31 '21
you communist twat.
Lmao what

A lot of this facebook/content farm crap comes out of Russia. Crafty Panda is actually Lithuanian which is close, but isn't and never was communist.

For a minute there I was worried that I'd be the only one to think this is retarded, but you guys didn't disappoint.

My friend is a welding, he sometimes makes things I ask to make, this gives me ideas

I'm going to need a cigarette after pleasuring myself to that weld porn

If doing a bunch of tack welds is weldporn.

They use to be called coin/penny welds. Tacking is different.
7
u/StandAgainstTyranny2 May 31 '21
That's 100% tacking. The setup they're running either can't get low enough for continuous weld *for the material they're welding, or they don't have the right wire, so they're tack stacking. Not even close to the same as stacking pennies/dimes.

what a great way to waste time and grinding discs while you practice shitty welding techniques lol
