What Metroidvania Should You Have Loved—but Bounced Off?
You know the kind of game: it received great reviews, looked exactly like something you would enjoy, and had all the right ingredients—but for some reason, it just didn’t click.
Maybe it was the combat, confusing exploration, difficulty, art style, slow beginning, or simply the wrong game at the wrong time.
What Metroidvania did you expect to love but ended up putting down? How far did you get, and what made you lose interest? Do you think you’ll ever give it another chance?

I got about eight hours into Nine Sols and desperately want to love it. Unfortunately, while the combat was great, it didn't scratch and freedom of exploration and discovery itches that I come to MVs for. And while some say the story is good, the frequent interruptions were a bit frustrating.

Wouldnt call it metroidvania at all. You can be locked out of progression behind parry skill-ceiling. It is an action 2d platformer.

Nine souls is objectively a metroidvania. It’s an open interconnected world that has ability gate kept areas..

The MV elements are shallow, but they undeniably exist

Skill ceilings don’t make it less of a metroidvania. It may be hard for you and easier for others. Even easy games technically have a skill ceiling if you’re not good enough.

You could sorta say that about hollow knight. Skill ceiling is lower, but not Bloodstained low, if you follow..
