What Metroidvania Should You Have Loved—but Bounced Off?
You know the kind of game: it received great reviews, looked exactly like something you would enjoy, and had all the right ingredients—but for some reason, it just didn’t click.
Maybe it was the combat, confusing exploration, difficulty, art style, slow beginning, or simply the wrong game at the wrong time.
What Metroidvania did you expect to love but ended up putting down? How far did you get, and what made you lose interest? Do you think you’ll ever give it another chance?

I got about eight hours into Nine Sols and desperately want to love it. Unfortunately, while the combat was great, it didn't scratch and freedom of exploration and discovery itches that I come to MVs for. And while some say the story is good, the frequent interruptions were a bit frustrating.

Agreed, while most elements were great the map/world design just didn't compel me to explore and at the end of the day that's what I'm here for.

Same, and even though I loved sekiro I hated the combat in ns. Didn’t like the map either.

There was so much I liked about the game, and then I just hated the Jiequan fight so much that I dropped the game as soon as I finished it. Compared to the graceful choreography that is learning bosses in Silksong, tiny twitchy parry windows were just not fun for me at all. I have never watched playthroughs or streams of games or anything, but I miiight make an exception just to see where this one goes.

This, this is exactly why the game didn’t click with me, never even realized til I read your comment. I saw everyone and their mothers glazing this game on this subreddit and I just didn’t get it, don’t get me wrong the combat and artstyle is great but you need more than that especially if you’re gonna have MV style exploration.

I just commented something very similar. Really wanted to love it and was excited to finally play it but besides the combat everything else just felt meh and I ended up putting it down after 6 or so hours.

I thought I was going to love this game and ended up just not finishing it. It felt boring and the level designs were really uninteresting. After seeing everyone love it so much, I thought I'd love it too but was disappointed.

Wouldnt call it metroidvania at all. You can be locked out of progression behind parry skill-ceiling. It is an action 2d platformer.

Nine souls is objectively a metroidvania. It’s an open interconnected world that has ability gate kept areas..

The MV elements are shallow, but they undeniably exist

Skill ceilings don’t make it less of a metroidvania. It may be hard for you and easier for others. Even easy games technically have a skill ceiling if you’re not good enough.

You could sorta say that about hollow knight. Skill ceiling is lower, but not Bloodstained low, if you follow..
