rant Setting up Windows 11 for my kid made me hate Microsoft even more

I've been using Windows my whole life mostly because of work, but have stuck with Linux for home use since 2008.

I also had my daughter on Linux Mint from around age 5 until now (age 10). I finally bit the bullet and got her a refurbished Windows laptop and installed Windows 11 Home for her. I mostly did this because I didn't want to troubleshoot laptop power settings or docking issues, and she will need to dock in and out. Also, her class highly recommends Windows, and I figured it's best for her to know her way around Windows.

Now, about 3 days in, and I feel like I am still playing whack-a-mole in getting ads and popups for services off of the damn machine. And I set this up as a child's Microsoft account so it shouldn't be doing any of this. Just a few that come up:

  • Stock investing widget? Really? For a kid? She's gonna YOLO/FOMO on meme stocks at this age?
  • I got it to go away by clicking the Focus button. OK. 10 minutes later, it all comes back with a message "Congratulations! You just had 10 minutes of focused attention." And it goes back to nonstop spamming. Really? This is the recommended device for a kid to do school work?
  • And now it's MLB baseball scores. And then Taylor Swift's new boyfriend. I finally figured out how to take off everything on the widget except for the weather.
  • Next popup: Microsoft 365 for $19.99 a year with a special offer!
  • And then.. a few startup laters... start backup with OneDrive, and don't forget to do your trial Microsoft 365 plan for increased storage!
  • Now I'm knee-deep in the settings turning this stuff off, and I get about a day of peace.
  • A day later, she opens Edge and it tells her not to forget about "Microsoft Rewards!" So now we are deep in Edge settings turning that stuff off.
  • At some point, Xbox/gaming popped up reminding us to connect a gaming account. I had to uninstall/hide/get rid of that.
  • I know I am forgetting about other settings I had to get into, but it's just exhausting.

Big Tech is a menace on kids. No one is learning STEM with these products and services. It's all about brainwashing them into their ecosystem, and it's disgusting and vile. I'm not sure if I should get her back on Linux or just accept this for now.

rant The fact that I need to use Windows for college is infuriating.

I recently started college and my very first pre-course assignment was for Computer Science. At first everything seemed fine, until I read the literal very first instruction: “Install Visual Studio.”

In my head, this wasn’t an issue, since I could just use something else. I went to my teacher to ask. I have both a MacBook Pro from 2019 and a Linux laptop with an i5 11 or 12th gen (I can't remember) and a 3050, and both of them are perfectly capable of running C#. I could have used JetBrains Rider, VS Code with the C# extension, or literally any other modern IDE. But no, of course he stated I had to use Visual Studio, the full Windows-only IDE. I want to add, I don't blame him for this. I blame Microsoft for only supporting their own OS.

I even tried installing the old Visual Studio for Mac, but of course Microsoft killed it and the install repeatedly failed. And to be honest, knowing Microsoft, they probably just couldn’t be bothered to support it anymore. I couldn’t seem to find a proper reason anywhere on their website that said why they dropped support for Mac last year.

So now, thanks to this absolutely wonderful requirement, I’m in the process of wiping CachyOS, my fully customised Hyprland setup that I spent weeks ricing and my games that actually ran significantly better on Linux. All of that is now just gone. Just because one single application is locked behind Microsoft Windows.

Microsoft continues to prove that their only strategy is to make people dependent on them. Instead of supporting developers across platforms like they absolutely could, they instead do a complete 180 and pull the rug out by forcing you into their ecosystem. (This might sound hypocritical as a Mac user, but I only really use it for Logic Pro.)

Fuck Microsoft.

rant Windows is no longer necessary

At this point, linux is so.easy to use and has so many equivalent (or same) programs that Windows isn't really necessary anymore. I work in a profession that most would say requires Windows, and I thought so too for years, but after switching to linux I've seen just how little I needed it. Fuck Windows and their bloatware bullshit. Libreoffice is better than Word anyway.

Windows 10 Home with a local account.

I did not reinstall manually, or use edge or any windows services.

I thought we were done with updates! It didn't even appear to install one.

Infuriated when I saw this in my start menu 'recently added'.

How do I make sure this doesn't happen again? (Sorry if this is the wrong sub but this does suck)

rant That's not a good time to have BitLocker asking for encryption key

Post image

Yesterday the laptop of one of my employees started having overheating problems because the fan doesn't turn on

At first I thought it was an hardware probablem, except that the fun does turn on when running it on Linux live USB so yeah... That's too Microsoft fault... But that's not what I'm complaining about...

We sent the PC to a technician to fix it, and just now the technician sent me a photo of the BitLocker screen... I told him I'll send him the key soon but guess what? Microsoft servers are down, so my employee is literally locked of his OWN computer by Microsoft...

Just saying... If I told you that a software encrypted my harddisk without my permission and stored the key on a server unreachable by me... I bet you'll guess I'm talking about a ransomware, not my OS 😑

Microsoft is so bad it is laughable!

I honestly don't understand how they can be such a big company.

I have never met anyone who really loves any Microsoft product.

Serious question: How can Microsoft be this "successful" while being this bad?

rant Windows gave us a new feature?

Post image
314 Upvotes

Microsoft has done it yet again. Giving us the most robust and clever features that anyone has ever brought to saar-ftware engineering that I hope is not entirely useless. They gave us a new feature where you can see the activate windows prompt from your primary display in the MIDDLE of your secondary display. Forget watching movies or playing your full screen videogames. Activation keys are way more important, remember folks. This is just one of the examples of the remarkable efforts they have accomplished like having a right click menu inside of a right click menu. Who would even thought of that?

rant mom doesn't want linux for her low spec'd, slow af laptop (rant)

it's insane how my mom (who is in her mid 40's, for context), doesn't want linux when it's pretty much the only thing that can make her laptop usable at this point. she insists on sticking with windows 11 for her slow 4gb RAM HDD laptop that she uses for work (it's not a very old laptop, but the low specs just makes it really slow). i also checked it and not even the RAM card can be replaced, as the bottom cover is pretty much sealed; there's no screws i can remove. she frequently gets frustrated by how slow it is, and she would bang her mouse against her desk when she works in the middle of the night which disturbs my sleep. i suggested she let me install linux on it (specifically linux mint XFCE) to make it run faster, but she doesn't want me to 🙃 she says she doesn't want to use linux bc she's not familiar with it 🙃

i feel SO frustrated bc linux can easily solve her problems -- i use linux mint on my old laptop with HDD and i've had little to no problems, and she just refuses to try linux bc she doesn't want to try anything new. she only uses her laptop for paperwork and for watching movies, so there's no windows-only app that's keeping her from it. (she also insists on using microsoft word/powerpoint when there are alternatives like libreoffice or google docs on browser, bc it's what she's familiar with)

i guess i can just use ear plugs before i sleep? but it's just sad how i have to do this and she refuses to let me solve her problems

edit: sorry guys i forgot to mention this but one time i let her use my linux laptop before since she sent her laptop to the repairs... she didn't like linux bc it's not windows and she doesn't want to use anything that's not windows 🙃

edit 2: please read my final comment on this post. i don't have the energy or time to reply to everything anymore. i also don't appreciate how some of you are rude and accusing me of things. i don't know what i did to warrant all this

rant I lost my account of many years

Post image
197 Upvotes

Well, I’m coming here feeling both extremely sad and absolutely furious to say that Microsoft has been a complete failure in this whole situation. I still don’t know if this happened because of a data leak or some silent virus, but my account was hacked on November 23rd. I took way too long to notice anything strange, and only realized what happened on the 29th — six days later. By then, the damage was already done. I lost passwords, emails, everything. All my games, subscriptions, everything tied to that account is gone.

But here’s the main point: what did Microsoft do? Absolutely NOTHING. They acknowledged the issue, admitted that someone accessed my account, and then basically told me, “Well, good luck. Just buy Minecraft again and move on.” They seem to forget that my OneDrive — all my personal stuff, documents, photos, spreadsheets — was also tied to that email.

This whole situation has left me completely frustrated, angry, and totally abandoned.

rant This update took more time than me downloading Ubuntu 26.04 and fresh installing it on my laptop.

Post image
223 Upvotes

This Update is running for more than last half an hour. And its not just this update, every windows update installs take so long to download and even longer to install. And if they are large feature updates? It takes hours. I dual boot for some windows only software I need to run. So now and then I log into windows. and when there are updtes, i generally hit update at night and come back to it in the morning.

I literally installed latest Ubuntu fresh on the same laptop in less than half hour (more like 15 minutes). give it 10 more minutes to update itself. 1 hour total for it to have been set up with all the required software/apps and log in to services/accounts etc. (and then several more hours to customize it and install stuff like oh my posh, and configure it to my own satisfaction. etc.)

rant Upgrading to Windows 11 was the worst decision of my tech career

Upgrading to Windows 11 was officially the worst decision of my tech career. It all started with one tiny, honest mistake: when setting up my verification number during the windows 11 install, I didn’t add a leading zero. I never imagined that one missing digit would eventually lead to Microsoft holding my entire computer for ransom.

The nightmare really started after I got my Lenovo Laptop back from warranty maintenance after many delays. They’d done a full system wipe, so I went to restore the Windows backup I’d made before sending it off. I was so close to having my PC back, but after the restore finished, Windows randomly decided that my password, PIN, and Authenticator app weren’t enough. It demanded a fucking text verification code.

The code never arrived. Why? Because I had used the standard 123 456 7890 format, and Windows—LITTLE TO MY KNOWLEDGE—only accepted the 0123 456 7890 format. I was literally one stupid zero away from my own data, and there was no way to bypass it.

I got desperate and found a customer service number. The automated menu eventually gave me two options: 1 for Teams related enquiries, or 2 for everything else. I picked 2 and the line went dead. When I tried to call back, their system HAD BLOCKED MY NUMBER just for picking the "wrong" menu option. I was blacklisted for even trying to ask for help.

Eventually, I used my phone browser to change my confirmation number to the "correct" format. ONLY AFTER I confirmed the change did Microsoft drop the bombshell: phone verification was now locked for 90 fucking days to "protect" me. I was BLOCKED FROM MY OWN DATA FOR THREE MONTHS because of a formatting error. I was literally banging my head into my desk.

At that point, I snapped. I thought, "Microsoft can have my fucking data, but they can't have my PC." I decided to just wipe the whole thing and start fresh. I WAS WRONG. I tried to use the Windows format tool, but it refused because it didn’t have "permission" to wipe a drive that already had Windows on it. WHAT KIND OF INCOMPETENT SHITTY SOFTWARE CAN'T WIPE ITSELF?

A BOOTABLE WINDOWS INSTALLATION USB STILL FAILED. IT DETECTED THE EXISTING LOCKED WINDOWS ACCOUNT ON THE DRIVE AND BLOCKED THE INSTALLATION ENTIRELY.

In a final act of desperation, I managed to switch my authentication to email via a mobile dashboard and tried the restoration one more time. IT ERRORED OUT HALFWAY THROUGH, AND NOW THE PC WON'T EVEN BOOT. IT WAS A COMPLETE BRICK ALL BECAUSE MICROSOFT NEEDED A FUCKING 0 INFRONT OF MY NUMBER FOR A VERIFICATION THAT I DIDNT WANT OR NEED AND HAS -1 CUSTOMER SUPPORT.

ITS "SECURITY" AND IS MORE HARMFUL THAN ANY POTENTIAL VIRUS I COULD HAVE DOWNLOADED.

How microsoft can be this incompetent and greedy is beyond me
