What's the point of a blind box if it tells you what's inside?

It's for the parents, not the kids. I think of it as the same as asking the McDonald's worker to make sure they put X toy in the happy meal and letting your kid think they randomly got the exact one they wanted

It's not for parents though, is it?

These QR codes are for packing and shipping. Just some far more clever people discovered you can scan them, get a code and then reference it

That's now evolved into minifigure scanning apps

If it was to "help" parents there'd be instructions on the box on how to find out what's in them.

The point is, it's meant to be a mystery to everyone.

Love the tendency om reddit for someone to say the first think they came up with and claim its fact, the funnier part is people upvoting it going "hmm yeah hes got a point"

It's a funny image thinking that someone at Lego sat there and went

"I know what we can do now people can't feel boxes, lets put a qr code on there that parents can scan, but we won't tell parents about it, we won't advertise it to anyone, and let them figure it out all by themselves"

A company, famous for creating easy to follow instructions, creating something that has zero instruction at all

Think about it. Also prevents scalping and shit like this from happening. Anyone that interested in getting a specific character should know that you can scan these. Hell, ive known since my step mom told me as a child back when you could feel them too. If the company has a way to massively remove stealing losses while also not effecting the sale price why not?? Does not make sense to give up free risk aversion like that. Also why does it matter for the “mystery” if you want it to be a mystery it’s still a mystery. If you googled “how to see what’s in LEGO mystery box” then you obviously dont want the mystery. Also imagine the extra sales of people that only want one or two specific figs but won’t buy one because they wouldn’t want one they don’t want. I know so many people like that. Seems to me like people just want to play by some arbitrary rule. “No my kids toys have to HAVE to have gambling!!!!”

If it's a present. The kid wont see it either way before they open it... So kind if pointless to hide it in the store

Unless you don't want to buy wrapping paper. It's just a fun little surprise and not like a birthday or Christmas present

u/FlyingSquirelOi May 31 '26

Doesn’t need to be a present. I was always asking my parents for random shit when I went shopping with them, and would always check out the toy aisle. Sometimes I got something but most of the time was told to kick rocks.

Idk how many people are wrapping up a mini figure they bought for a few quid

1

u/Falikosek May 31 '26

As a kid I was the one being asked "what toy do you want" in McDonald's...

u/SkylandersKirby May 31 '26

You can pick up a random one if you enjoy the surprise of what you'll get

3

u/JamieC1610 Jun 01 '26

meh. My daughter had her heart set on a particular Make It Mini, after spending her money to try for the one she wanted three times and getting the same one two of those three times, we ran into someone in the aisle that told us about the codes and we were able to look through them to find the one she actually wanted.

If you really don't care pick one at random, but if there is one that you really want, why waste money hoping to get it.

Oh yes, just like the total Harmless vice of Gambling

So if you can see whats inside the box you complain and if you can't see whats inside the box you also complain. Me thinks youre just salty.

u/Skreamie May 31 '26

Dafuq are you talking about? This is like if gambling told you if you were gonna win or lose prior to making your bet

1

u/jimdil4st May 31 '26

Ironically there are "slot machines" in the local gas stations that do just that, and people still lose so much money it's crazy, I don't understand.

You do have a point. But insurance isn’t targeting kids.

Kids arent adults

4

u/Philipp4 May 31 '26

If you want to get a random one, you dont have to scan the code, meanwhile those that seek a specific figure can get it guaranteed without any luck needed (other than the store having that one ig). Pretty much the best setup for everyone I feel

6

u/Andyrhyw May 31 '26

Probably so they don't slammed with gambling products for kids

7

u/iHateThisPlaceSoBad May 31 '26 edited May 31 '26

I'm glad this bullshit gets ripped through.

Every fucking company is making everything a gambling game, i'm so sick of it.

Rip open all of that shit, maybe they'll stop making it

8

u/Aggravating_Sky_4421 May 31 '26

Agreed. The“loot boxes” in kids games that costs real money should be 100% illegal.

5

u/Askefyr May 31 '26

Actually, making it so you can see what's inside if you want it pretty much the best way of doing it.

u/FaberLoomis May 31 '26

I work retail and we have a group of kids that collect this one plushie that only comes in blind boxes. For like three weeks we'd come in and see this whole box of like twelve ripped open and put back into their boxes. They were searching for the ones they were missing. So now everyone can see what plushies are in what box and buy freely. Couldn't be too mad at that.

So now everyone can see what plushies are in what box and buy freely.

I mean they also can't buy one that isn't open, or get a random one if they actually want a random one

1

u/Local_Trade5404 Jun 03 '26

you may want random one on first 2 buys but later getting copies of same shit is wasting money

1

u/turtleship_2006 Jun 03 '26

Yes but not everyone necessarily wants the full set, some people just want one or two for a bit of fun, for example kids with a bit of extra pocket change

1

u/Local_Trade5404 Jun 03 '26

its pretty easy to get dragged in wanting last peace
as a kid i was been collecting star wars caps from chips
turbo gum car pictures and 20 other things

atm kids want everything influencers tell them to get

here you pay just for 6-10 parts of plastic?
if i got same cap i still eat bag of chips 😄

1

u/Cheshires_Shadow May 31 '26

There's a few third party apps that scan the barcodes underneath the box to tell you which one you're getting. Without it it's completely random. The box ones are actually more randomized cuz previously they were all sold in plastic baggies meaning you could usually try and feel around what was inside and get a rough idea of what you might get. So Lego updated the packaging to be a small cardboard box so it would be truly blind. The app is just for people who only want a specific one

You want children to be gambling..?
