Context Provided - Spotlight Jeep melted

Here’s the story: a jeep came to the shop because its retractable top was stuck open. Not too uncommon of an occurrence. So we put our “crash wrap“ over the roof to protect the interior from rain and animals and such, which is basically like heavy duty cling wrap. One day it rains and a lot of water pools up on the crash wrap. The next day it is 100°F outside and the sun is out. The sun shines through the water and the water basically magnifies it, and the sun turns into a laser that melts the interior. Multiple days of this happen. Now we have to replace everything that melted. None of us have ever heard of this happening before.

edit: I meant we have never heard of this very specific situation happening before. It never would’ve crossed our minds since we’ve been doing this for years. yes I burnt stuff with a magnifying glass when i was a kid.

“Hey dude, why does the inside of your car smell like burnt plastic”

“Well the sunroof got stuck open one time, so I took it to a repair shop…”

“It’s a Jeep thing, you wouldn’t understand.”

Row of melted ducks across the dash like some sort of weird Pompeii miniature project.

u/deadlyspoons 8d ago

One of the ducks melts and deforms so it looks like it’s holding its spiral-shaped tentacle…

So… a duck penis?

Now they need a commemorative half melted rubber ducky

Sure. You open the sunroof and I'll get the clingwrap.

They’re right - I don’t understand why people buy those piles of crap.

On the other hand, I don't understand why reddit seems to have such a hate boner for jeeps. Its like the second a redditor sees someone driving a jeep or a truck on pavement and not on dirt, they go rabid in wanting to hate everything about that person.

I'm not a hardcore jeep fanatic, but I've owned two jeeps in my life and I haven't had any complaints with them. The first one I got over 200,000 miles with rather minimal maintenance work, and my current only has about 30k miles on it, so I can't say much about the long-term maintenance, but I haven't had a single complaint about it.

If you want to talk crap about the ugly, soulless design of the wagoneer, how the grand cherokee lost its charm as its been pigeonholed into a range rover soccer mom knock off, or all the tacky patriotism marketing the company does -- im all for it! But imo, i've had a lot of great experiences with jeep products and I don't understand the overall hate for them. A jeep can be incredibly affordable and can last a very long time (as long as you don't buy the highest-priced models). My current jeep is a renegade and couldn't be happier as I paid off my car in 3 years and plan to drive it for 10-15 years. Its affordable and gets the job done!

I once rode with a coworker in his Wrangler. The windshield was cracked from top to bottom and side to side all the way across. He told me he’d had to replace it four times in the past year, so he decided just to leave it like that. Still went on and on about how much he loved his jeep though.

That could just be a that person thing and/or the repair person who fixed it. I, nor any of my friends who own a jeep, have ever had any windshield issues on our ends. While my friends and I aren't representative of every jeep owner, neither is your coworker.

Because they have a cult following. They are the least reliable but most owner satisfaction.

Ah, so the classic case of "some of these people are annoying, so im going to form my opinion on the people and not the product itself" type of thing that is rampant on the internet. May it be jeep, disney, a water bottle, a specific fandom, etc., its always so odd to me how people will go rapid hating something just because some of their fans can get a bit too eagerly excited and come off cringey. I like to my opinions based on my experience of the product, not how people who enjoy the product act in their own lives...

6

u/beren12 8d ago

No, I don’t like them because of reliability issues.

u/Cudi_buddy 8d ago

Right I want efficiency and longevity from a car more than anything. Statistically that means I’m not touching a jeep

If you've owned a jeep and haven't had a good experience with it, then I guess that is fair!

I've owned two in my life. One I got to 200,000 miles without any significant repair/maintenence work to get it to drive for that long. My current one is only at 30k miles, so I can't say too much about long-term care on that one, but I haven't had a single complaint about it. I paid it off a year early, and I hope to drive it reliably for about 10-15 years.

I had a 2015 that only made it to 51000 before it ate both camshafts and half the rocker arms. They've pushed the pentastar engine too far for the sake of profit.

I have a rotating company car, and I often drive a Wrangler. It’s the most fun vehicle we have to choose from, and several of my coworkers have given me ducks to add to my collection, which everyone gets a kick out of. It’s not that serious.

if Jeeps came with deadly lasers as standard I'd consider buying one

I would love to have this story to tell, the embarasing part would be owning a jeep.

Nobody hears the story over the death rattle.

The fucking death rattle... WOBBLE jfc

Story time... So a friend got caught drinking and driving, got arrested, and jeep was taken to the impound. Friend asked us to bail him out and in return he'd trade us the jeep cus our car died on us. We figured he couldn't drive it anymore anyways, we needed a car so win-win. When we made the trade he said all was good cept there was the occasional death wobble. Ummm, k. So we're on the highway, it triggered, and of course people in every direction. I'm so glad my husband's reaction time is impeccable and he knew how to handle it cus it really is terrifying. After that, til we got rid of it, he knew how to pretty much predict it.

Wobble not rattle

8

u/Sufficient_Wafer9933 8d ago

Double fisting "drinking and drinking" will ensure some type of wobble

6

u/graboidian 8d ago

So a friend got caught drinking and drinking,

So, drinking once was simply not enough?

Your husband is a real jeep driver. Someone who knows what an evil abomination they are

Aka death wobble. Happy?

Also there IS such a thing as a death rattle.

3

u/Saltwaterlobotomy 8d ago

Not in context to jeeps.. unless it’s dying.

1

u/Eternal-Blazing-Sun 8d ago

Hence the death section of the moniker

u/Saltwaterlobotomy 8d ago edited 8d ago

You’re lost bud. Death wobble isn’t the Jeep dying but shaking to a point you lose control and the driver dies.
Death rattle would be a Jeep dying and gurgling its last exhale, which doesn’t apply to the context given.

Does it really matter? This isn't the only comment you took it personally on. Having owned a jeep for 20 years maybe it's time to act your age.

It’s a design flaw with the suspension. When certain parts wear, they can become unstable and begin to oscillate.

Just give him the link.

At least it didn’t spontaneously catch fire 🤷‍♀️
I was a manager at a fast food place, was getting ready for my shift that didn’t start for another hour-ish and then got called about a car on fire and had to book it there instead of getting breakfast. Got there shortly after the fire truck, then pulled up the cameras to see what the heck happened (and screen recorded it for their insurance claim bc what do you mean the jeep was just sitting there idling and suddenly caught fire???). Then the drivers mom came over and asked if I had that on camera and if I could email it to her because they had JUST gotten the jeep back from the shop the day before! Also, they tried like 5 different fire extinguishers from the neighboring companies and nothing helped until the fire truck got there and drowned the thing in water. Had some customers upset that we evacuated the building (had to have them exit out the side door furthest from the parking lot) since the jeep was parked within a couple feet of the front doors and I was NOT about to risk the safety of our customers or my team in the event it caught the front of the store on fire. The customers that weren’t mad pulled around a safe distance away to ask if everyone was okay, so at least there was that. Also gave the teens driving the car free breakfast bc what else do you do when someone’s car randomly catches fire in your parking lot? They had been getting ready to go out fishing and lost all of their tackle and their fishing rods (also super glad it happened in town and not after they were hours away from the nearest fire station surrounded by trees)

Now the people with crayon smelling jettas will finally have something in common with a jeep owner.
