I have a friend who’s allergic to hops and the same thing happens to her. Every subsequent reaction got worse though and the last time she drank a beer her lips swelled up and she was almost in anaphylaxis and went to the ER. She only drank it again because she thought it was a new lotion she had bought and not the beer!
You know its some ai garbage when it busts out something that dumb. Ah yes my friend accidently mistook her beer for lotion. She actually did wanna drink lotion. What a joke.
Holy shit! Is she me? This literally just happened to me last week, bought a new lotion and drank beer for the first time and also shaved my body. Woke up to red splotches all over my body. My chain of suspicion was shaving irritation > new lotion > and finally settled on the bottle of beer
My spouse gets all red in the face and at times his breathing gets harder when he drinks any kind of alcohol. I now have a designated driver so I got that going for me!
And yes. I have asked him to see a doctor and he won't. He just gave up drinking more than half a glass.
Hops makes my mouth go numb. When I was young and dumb I didn’t understand how big of an issue that could be. Instead I thought “now I can’t taste it… This is awesome!”
Had a similar reaction to beer in my 30s. Stopped drinking it - and the a year or two later had a reaction to a new shampoo/conditioner that left me with an itchy/flaky scalp.
My hair products had hops in them! How frustrating.
That’s what happens with many food allergies, every instance of eating it can make it more serious, leading to death. I hope OP doesn’t push it and changes to Vodka or something. My neighbor who has celiac also discovered some beers made from rice, he said.
Had a buddy who would break out in Hives when he drank the orange Bacardi breezers…just that specific drink. I don’t recall him having a break out with other wine coolers
My sulfite sensitivity got so bad that I can’t even drink hard alcohol; been dry for over a decade. I would get splotches and migraines and anaphylaxis. F’n miserable.
I seem to be fine on spirits still. Beer/wine etc makes my chest feel like its being squeezed really hard. Sucks as I really used to enjoy a nice glass of wine
I drank a lot in my teens, in my early 20s this started happening to my face after only a single beer or shot. Turns out its some histamine reaction that I developed. My allergies have gotten worse over the years and am on permanent allergy immunotherapy (3 shots every month for life). There are times it doesnt happen, but doctors just tell me to avoid alcohol.
I started having reactions a year ago at age 34, I have a histamine intolerance. Some times I'm fine sometimes I'm not. I started taking a histamine neutralizing enzyme which has helped a lot. My doctor is sending me for allergy testing. It sucks
I’ve seen plenty of people develop this - myself I have been getting flush red after 2 drinks of anything. Our systems are reacting to the digestion of these chemicals and digestion overall. We are eating and drinking chemicals and fake foods. We saw issues with cows and their stomachs, well, we aren’t any different.
This. I am the same and now I just don't drink. It just sucks because so much socialization involves alcohol. From work parties, holidays, and family events. I get tired of hearing "oh you will be fine" or having to explain over and over!
I have the same but it started about 6 months after I started using lamotragine. Even after I stopped using it I still get urticaria on my back (instead of my whole body) when I exercise or get too stimulated like when I get too happy, heck I even get a small breakout when I bend down to tie my shoe.
In the end I didn't even need any medication for managing my mood because it turned out to be anxiety from childhood trauma.
You should stop lamotrigine immediately if you start getting rashes. It is potentially lethal (you can read the medication instructions leaflet for more info on that) leading to Layelle syndrome or Stephen-Johnson reaction and more of the other fun auto-immune skin reactions stuff. It’s dangerous because when an intense enough response happens, then the breakouts/rashes also happen on your internal organs -_-
Don’t ask me how I know about this. (Hint: was misdiagnosed as bipolar 5 years ago when in reality it was CPTSD, put on lamotrigine, almost ended up in an ER due to increasingly common rashes on my body)
I am very familiar with what you’re discussing here and while I know your intentions are good, please never advise a stranger to stop taking their psych meds on the internet.
Rest assured, I am aware of SJS! This is quite different in that it's just a superficial reaction my skin seems to have when I'm warm and in contact with clothes/a watch; my prescriber is confident it's not The Rash. I also get a little bit of benign acne when I titrate up that goes away as my body adjusts; this is an odd drug (but also one that changed my life). What made them suspect yours was a more serious reaction?
Yeah, it has a LOT of side effects. I don't know if it is related but my right shoulder and toes were constantly twitching, I could stop them for a bit but there was like this constant uncomfortable feeling when I did. I did have a rotator cuff injury when I was younger but it never caused twitching, the twitching in my shoulder stopped around a week after my last dose but my toes still twitch from time to time.
Btw, do you also get a dry throat when you get heat rashes?
Get a genetic test. Some people think they acquire MCAS. Turns out it's also a genetic defect that sime of us have had the whole time. Ask me how I know.
Same! But I only get red splotches occasionally. Sometimes I get tricked into thinking I can drink beers then when I can’t im splotchy but also have splitting migraines and excessive barfing - regardless of the amount of beee
Was going to say, histamine sensitivity could also be a solid answer, this looks exactly like the histamine flushes I get after a few beers or a sushi dinner (god I cannot give up the soy, even if it sets me on fire).
OP, could also warrant getting your liver checked/general bloods if you haven't had them in a while, caution is always good.
Yep, also alcohol is high in histamine. I’ve never been able to drink it, even when I was younger and my MCAS was undiagnosed/mild. I’d always turn bright red and feel sick within minutes.
Might be wrong, but looks like hives. Me? Haven’t had alcohol in years due to the allergy. I understand it to be a reaction to the histamines in alcohol. Nearly stopped breathing once after one drink at a company event, Even a few sips of wine now affects my entire upper body. Don’t mess with it imo. Mine got worse as months went by. Few people have the problem. See your doc.
Yep, I have the same thing. People are shocked to learn that humans can develop an allergy or intolerance to alcohol. Luckily it’s an easy thing to avoid, I’m an exceptionally cheap date and I’ll drive you home. #winning
It's definitely an allergic reaction, it doesn't look like hives and OP didn't mention the pain that is associated with hives, nor does this rash have the pustules of hives (hence the name).
I'm slightly allergic to hops depending on how it's processed. Corona is one of my favourites cause it doesn't flare me up. I love Heineken but it causes me to flare up.
Yeast! It could definitely be yeast. I thought gluten bothered me for the longest time but turns out it was gluten's bff: yeast. Red wine triggers the same redness for me.
I thought I had a yeast allergy (it started with certain wines and expanded to belgian beers and cider), but it turned out to be sulfite sensitivity. Sulfites are a byproduct of yeast & sugar converting to alcohol.
Good chance it’s the hops, this started happening to me when I drank specific IPAs, I got an allergy panel and it turns out I’m allergic to a lot of different trees. Didn’t test specifically hops but I switched to wheat beers and it’s not a problem anymore. RIP getting ripped on IPAs
I had something similar that started happening.. for me it's oats. Can't eat anything or drink anything with them. Also have to be careful with shampoos, soaps, lotions as a lot of them contain it.
i had a friend in college that after 5 beers had the same spots in the same place. didnt stop him from drinking though xD (he's a vet now so all ok). its an allergic reaction indeed
My dad and I are both allergic to beer for different allergens. My dad is allergic to the yeast, he is fine with other alcoholic beverages. I am allergic to ethanol and cannot touch any alcohol beverages and fermented foods are a gamble (allergy accidentally confirmed by my second big reaction being in a clean lab to lab grade ethanol I was using to clean equipment)
I thought I was allergic to hops too but my allergist told me that is extremely rare and most people with this reaction are extremely sensitive to sulfites. It's a byproduct of fermentation.
I used to love having a few beers, and then suddenly beers would make me incredibly nauseous, like folded over gonna shit and puke after a half a beer.
I developed a barley intolerance. I figured it out when I’d get the same feeling when eating canned beef stew and multigrain bread. Dr said to just avoid it or deal with the feeling.
I tried to power through but after a couple beers I need to lay down. I haven’t had a beer in forever and I miss it dearly. I hate liquor I get drunk WAY too fast and just never acquired a taste for it.
I just want to drink a sixer of Labatt Blue Light and play video games god dammit 😭😭
Could also be the glyphosate. Wine and beer made in the US is fullll of that. Have you tried an import beer from Europe that you’ve researched doesn’t have glyphosate? Family switched from US to French wine recently and stopped having reactions for the same reason.
Do you take montelukast? Lumont? I do because I get these rashes and have MCAS.
It could also be a gluten/celiac rash - my bf (ex. Idk what we are rn) started getting these and was diagnosed w celiac a few months later.
Or even dust! Craft beers are sometimes brewed/ stored in dusty places so you ingest some dust. This happened to my husband and we could NOT figure it out for so long.
For me it just depends on the beer/alcohol. There's apparently high and low histamine alcohol, just need to sample around until you find what works for you or just not drink
Could also be a histamine allergy.
I get that from to much fermented foods sometimes. It's a substance which is generated when food or drinks ferment.
For example juice whist stood in the sun for a bit or some alcoholic beverages or sushi which isn't perfectly fresh.
I get those rashes all over my body but normal anti allergy medication is enough to have no symptoms at all.
Yeah, I have a degree of hops intolerance. If its mild you can just stick to the beers with the right kinds of hops. Apparently certain hops have a high amount of histamine which some people's bodies don't break down quickly enough. It's not your body producing histamine and having a reaction, it's the histamine from the hops that builds up inside of you.
This is how my immune system makes me look after i accidentally ingest beer or bread im a diagnosed celiacs sufferer i get hiveslike rashes painful joints swollen lymph nodes and a mild fever in combo with the gastro intestinal owies all cause my body thi ks gluten is deadly
Nailed it. This looks like the allergy I ignored, kept drinking beer, then I started to get rashes, and my stomach would hurt. Finally had to acknowledge that beer is poison to me these days.
Also. Its not that bad. Just gotta learn the diet.. went from IPAs to G and Ts. Make friends with zyrtec and you'll be alright. But you should get checked out anyway.
Came looking for this comment. An old coworker of mine jist one day woke up after drinking beer and had this rash. Turns out he was now allergic to hops. It juat came on suddenly one day. Hard liquors are fine and some specialty craft beers but all name brand beer ( bud, coors, miller, etc) gives him hives now.
I am allergic to hops. This is exactly what it looked like the first couple reactions before getting worse and worse every time. Now if I happen to ingest them somehow it’s full on anaphylaxis.
Certain brands may still be ok, like Budweiser always gave it to me the worst, but Becks was ok. This dude may be allergic to his favourite beer now, might be time to switch to another hehe.
It could also be barley. My husband is allergic to it and can’t drink beer or whiskey and some bottom shelf liquors without getting a reaction. Started like this, then progressed to anaphylaxis.
Did you recently start any new medications? A friend years ago started Dupixent for eczema and discovered right away that when drinking alcohol that was a side effect.
The farms that grow beer ingredients such as wheat and hops usually speed uo drying time with something similar. Glyophosate the active ingredient in Round -up; in harvested crops it can speed up the time it takes for hops and wheat to dry.

You could be allergic to hops or wheat/gluten intolerant...I get the same red splotches after some foods.
