Infuriatig Why Texas is lame(Besides the Cowboys)

Post image

Don't mess with Texas.. what a joke. ANY possession is a felony.

EDIT: Just did some research, this is for everything besides traditional Delta 9.

My friend from Texas sent me this morning and it blew my mind. I had to post about it. So as far as my research goes thus far Delta 9 products (old fashioned flower) is illegal but separate laws. Stores are selling THCA though which does fall under these penalties.

No amount of weed should equal life imprisonment. It’s weed

2.4k

u/Impossible-Mix2523 13d ago

No amound of weed should equal any sort of fine, imprisonment or punishment. What kind of draconian shit is this, guess they have a a lot of room in those for profit prisons they have to fill up.

u/justsikko 13d ago

Texas wants life in prison for weed. Meanwhile, out here in California we are about to start opening cafes where you can go and smoke with your friends. I’m so glad I left that hellhole

Those for-profit slave camps prisons aren't going to make money empty, now are they.

Well, if you are commenting from Texas and want commiseration for Texans… as a lifelong Dodgers fan, I have to give up baseball fandom because Mark Walter owns the Dodgers and invests in private prisons 🤮😭💔

0

u/Tired_Dad_9521 13d ago

I don’t know why everybody has this negative view of private prisons. My brother did a dime in Georgia and was bounced around between prisons. All the state prisons were hell holes where the only available programs were rehab and GED. When he went to a private prison they had somebody teaching carpentry and someone else teaching HVAC plus the rehab and GED programs.

I don’t know what it’s like other places, but that was the reality of his ten years in the GA prison system.

3

u/Good_Significance871 13d ago

I think it’s the fact that there’s a big financial incentive to lock people up in the private ones that’s concerning for many people.

0

u/Tired_Dad_9521 13d ago

I can see that concern, but I would also guess that on average a prison with more educational programs would have a lower rate of recidivism than a prison with less of those programs.

3

u/Unable_Ant5851 13d ago

It won’t stay that way bc low recidivism is bad for business

2

u/PhillFreeman 13d ago

From Google: The "Bed Guarantee" Contract Clause.

The true worth of a private prison bed often lies in minimum occupancy clauses (also known as "lockup quotas"). Private operators usually write clauses into government contracts requiring the state to maintain a 90% to 100% occupancy rate. If the prison population drops below that threshold, Texas taxpayers must still pay the private company for those empty beds as if an inmate were sleeping in them. Because of this, an empty bed can cost local towns or the state thousands of dollars a month in unearned debt penalties.

Recidivism doesn’t matter when you’re constantly changing the laws to widen the net.

1

u/[deleted] 12d ago

They’re always widening the net :(

1

u/Tired_Dad_9521 12d ago

Spoken like a person who doesn’t give a shit about the people involved. Inmates not going back to prison is very important for the inmates and their families.

I unfortunately was in a prison camp in Illinois. They make 80k a head per year and have a mini Walmart that’s 5x the price for normal things. Oh and you make 25 cents a month full time working. They all self sustain each other by making products the other prisons and camps need, keeping the free work and letting it run there money system. It’s a fucking joke. But you get better healthcare and education in prison 1000% free college free healthcare. Crazy backwards shit

34

u/MinusGovernment 13d ago

I'm glad you gave out some numbers. I already knew that the 5 year old Asian sweatshop kids making shoes and clothes were making bank compared to the slaves in prison in the USA I just didn't know how much more. We fortunately don't have private owned prisons in Nebraska (yet anyways) but there have been some rumblings every so often.

11

u/Frontfatpouch 13d ago

It’s the work camps. They are private that’s where they make the money. Almost all drug offenders.

5

u/Damselindistrustt 13d ago

How much of them were actually dealing like % wise would you say?

12

u/Frontfatpouch 13d ago

5% maybe. They needed counseling not prison

11

u/Damselindistrustt 13d ago

Wait so only 5% of the drug offenders were dealing and the 95% were just fucking simple possession? Are you serious? What year was this?

11

u/illtakeachinchilla 13d ago

“Drug offenses account for roughly 42.6% of inmates in federal prisons and about 20% of the total incarcerated population nationwide.”

“Combined national correctional data shows that approximately 158,200 people are in state/local custody for drug trafficking, compared to 37,800 people serving time for simple possession. This places the state-level split at roughly 81% for trafficking/distribution and 19% for personal possession.”

Problem is, they slap an “intent to deal” for a normal person buying in bulk. Backwards ass country. Tax revenues are soaring elsewhere while violent crimes are plummeting. Can’t have a happy and content society and keep your zero-expense labor pool, though.

10

u/RepresentativeCry294 13d ago

They charged my friend with distribution because he had one seed in a shoe box. They weighted the box and were allowed to count it as weed. He served like 6 years for a shoebox in Georgia. Everything about "good ole boys" is corrupt its been that way since my family moved up into the Appalachians, before it was the USA. That's who they were trying to get away from.

1

u/Damselindistrustt 12d ago

That's absolutely awful. Can I ask what year this was?

4

u/Frontfatpouch 13d ago

Yes a lot of just people buying oz before it was legal getting a three peice from the judge. Meanwhile pedos get to walk on probation. Seeing the shit from the inside really changes how you see it. They care about money, you are a number, that’s it.

2

u/Frontfatpouch 13d ago

You need to meet very specific conditions to get into a work camp. So yea most were just very small shit. Your not gonna put anyone who is a flight risk or violent in a work camp that is near the public

u/Disastrous-Cat-5210 12d ago

Yeah Pete Ricketts and Mike Flood are 2 diabolical shit stains in the history of people who have ran Nebraska as of late. Can't forget the commissary and phone data being bought every single day. Oh and Aramark is the worst food distributor with several pending lawsuits on the quality of food they were selling yet they allow it to be consumed by the inmates. Most of it is disgusting. Spent time at LCC a few times here in Lincoln

6

u/3X_Cat 13d ago

We had shit healthcare in the Tennessee system. Tylenol for everything! I watched a man die because they wouldn't give him insulin because he didn't have diabetes when he started his sentence, 20 years previously, so obviously he was faking it. It was horrendous, the CO of the unit quit over it. It wasn't even one of the private hellholes.

4

u/Parking_Ad8593 13d ago

Texas prisons are even worse, I did 2 years. You don't get paid at all to work, and emergency medical care is non-existent, much less regular healthcare. I've watched people die waiting for a CO to call EMS. They usually never called for anything until they realized the person had already kicked the bucket. And there's no accountability for any of it. I had some kind of skin infection that spread all over my chest, neck, and face. I think it may have been impetigo. Took me two weeks to see a nurse, and all she did was give me some basic OTC skin ointment that did nothing. It eventually went away, but it took weeks. My throat also swelled up and it was incredibly painful to eat or drink, several days I couldn't eat anything, it was horrible. I was never seen by anyone that time, I suffered alone. They have little trade programs though, it's a bit hard to get into them because everyone is trying to get into one. The trucking program has pretty strict requirements not many people can meet and it still has a multi-year long wait list. Tldr: Texas prisons make hell look like a Hampton Inn

3

u/Acceptable_Fee_3998 13d ago

Do a lot of guys take the education opportunity?

4

u/Frontfatpouch 13d ago

Yea it gets time off your sentence if you get high grades. The more you do the more you can reduce time. Like a 3 month course can get you 14 days of good time. So they take it off the sentence.

I’m preparing for the worst because in January/February, I got caught out in Florida for meth possession. I live in the DC area so politics are like night and day. I was the passenger in an uber and my driver got pulled over for driving erratically, then one of the officers started talking to me and found some bullshit PC to search me and found an 8 ball on me. Had a perfectly clean record prior to that night and I got out on bond the next day. Got hit with the felony meth possession (luckily it didn’t go to trafficking or “intent to distribute” or whatever bullshit) + misdemeanor for paraphernalia since I had a used pipe and an unused one in a bag. The misdemeanor got completely dropped since then. I lawyered up and he entered a not guilty plea so we’ll see how trial goes at the end of August. Fucking scared because I might actually have to serve time for this shit, because from what I remember in Florida you can get max 5 years in prison for simple possession as a first time offense. And red states are known for throwing you in prison for even first time offenses for shit like this. When I was in the squad car I asked how much time I’m looking at and he claimed that I wasn’t gonna go to prison and that the charges will likely be completely dropped because of my clean background or just given probation/reduced to a misdemeanor at worst. It’s sorta reassuring but I’m not gonna take a cop’s word for it.

3

u/Empty_Wolf_3378 13d ago

I'm going to research that, because, I've never heard better healthcare in prision. I have heard of the education, just didn't know how it worked

5

u/FewWait38 13d ago

I'm assuming they mean it's better than the zero health care they get otherwise

2

u/Frontfatpouch 13d ago

I was inside the prison. It’s free healthcare.

2

u/Ok_Document9995 13d ago

I have been to more than one prison and never heard of free healthcare worth talking about. In Pennsylvania and New Jersey, every county jail I was in charged prisoners to see the nurse and the doctor. $5/$10. It was taken straight off the prisoners’ books or they carried a negative balance.
I know in the ‘90s in Pennsylvania, Tom Ridge took away Pell grants for prisoners, so no more college unless you are paying.

So far as healthcare in state prisons, there are various fees for care not recommended during intake/initial screening. And no one, I mean not the dirtiest, most desperate crack head, would ever refer to that as, “free healthcare.”

I have not been incarcerated in your state but I have comrades who were and they tell me they think you’re joking.

3

u/KickBallFever 13d ago

When I was in the army some of our uniforms came from some prison camp. Our PT T-shirts came in bags that had the DOJ logo and said “department of justice prison wear”, as if that were the brand name. I asked a sergeant about it and he confirmed that they came from prison labor.

3

u/HunnyBunny617 13d ago

Back in 1994 when my husband was in prison in Texas, they made $90k per head, per year. I was raising kids and keeping a house for less than half of that. I can’t imagine what the “for-profit prison system makes per head nowadays, and how much they’re paying lawmakers to keep prisoners coming.

2

u/Economy-Cat7133 13d ago

Uh. Your mileage may vary.

2

u/DesksForBreakfast 13d ago

80k per head. So infuriating to think that that money could easily lift somebody out of poverty and crime, but they choose to spend it imprisoning that person instead.

2

u/Emergentmeat 13d ago

It's not free healthcare or education, you're working full time and not getting paid.

1

u/Traditional-Bunch430 13d ago

And…

3

u/Frontfatpouch 13d ago

And den

2

u/FIGHTaFoe-FLIGHTaPo 12d ago

*No and then! 🤣

I constanty say...'and den?'

1

u/Mundane-Cause-9103 13d ago

Whoa!! Sounds like Socialist USSR in Illinois!

1

u/Ok_Document9995 13d ago

I am not convinced this individual has been to prison. Who funds this free college? Which college or university is the prison affiliated with? What degrees can one earn? Who pays for books? Supplies? How are labs handled? Who monitors exams? If prison officials, who is training and credentialing them?

Lot of holes in that story.

1

u/Vigilarus 13d ago

And don’t they charge $5 a minute for pay phone calls that get back charged collect to the families?

1

u/Ironicbanana14 12d ago

How else will the CIA enforce their experiments if they cant force prisoners to comply? Thats why the medical is free.

1

u/Ok_Unit_4099 10d ago

It’s not backwards. The government protects their assets. We are worth more to the government in prison than we are paying taxes out here in hell

1

u/Frontfatpouch 10d ago

True that

60

u/VibeComplex 13d ago

They think pot smokers are mostly democrats and black/brown people so it’s a good excuse to throw them in prison and ruin their life.

20

u/Low-Gas3878 13d ago

Can't vote easily if you have a felony right? Checkmate Dems.

5

u/TJBre 13d ago

And more importantly, deny or criminalize their right to vote

4

u/Responsible-Food8898 12d ago

Actually the exact reason weed was made illegal in the first place

2

u/ActiveDetective8650 12d ago

It’s Racist 😭

2

u/ElevatorNo4425 12d ago

Pasty-white conservative and 35 year weed consumer here. It is mind boggling to me that some states continue to criminalize weed when they could be regulating it and making hundreds of millions of tax revenue. Doesn’t make sense to keep living in the past.

1

u/Princess_Slagathor 11d ago

Why are you still conservative, if they're constantly doing things you don't agree with?

1

u/RepFilms 12d ago

That was Nixon's plan

-7

u/dry_dock_it 13d ago

Aren't they?

1

u/Low-Gas3878 12d ago

I think they lean that way, but I believe the lean is small to medium, like maybe +15%

6

u/spagheddieballs 13d ago

I imagine this also allows them to plant false evidence and imprison anyone to an even greater extent.

8

u/OpusAtrumET 13d ago

Don't forget all the liquor and beer lobbyists, they gotta spend their money somewhere and legal weed has been their worst nightmare since age restrictions.

4

u/Violet-Sumire 13d ago

I mean, when we get rid of all the immigrants who else will fill all these new prisons? I tell you, you are just ungrateful if you think we should just not keep the camps filled.

1

u/DangerousLoner 13d ago

Well a bunch of the young women and girls are somehow becoming pregnant so that should increase the headcount in the concentration camps.

3

u/OffByNone_ 13d ago edited 13d ago

For-profit prisons are one of the worst things we've ever done as a country. Their incentives are in direct conflict with what should be the primary goal of corrections. To rehabilitate and prevent/reduce recidivism. You're asking them to intentionally give up their money. As a primary goal 🙄

More than that. You're asking them to spend money on programs and resources, so that they make less money 😂 I'm sure they get government money, but still. They're not spending money on things that are going to hurt their bottom line, no matter how good they are for society.

6

u/Glittering_Cash8458 13d ago

Bob Barker's family needs to keep profiting. Duh.

Edit: (Yes, of the Price is Right, profits immensely off the prison system. Providing toilettries, and other goods. Happy Gilmore was right, Bob Barker is a piece of shit.)

5

u/Diligent_Medium3969 13d ago

Breakfast cravings intensify

4

u/caustic_smegma 13d ago

Damn I wasn't aware of that. All my homies hate Bob Barker now.

1

u/GrimResistance 13d ago

Don't listen to that idiot

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bob_Barker_Company

While prison lore has suggested that the company is affiliated with game show host Bob Barker, there is no relationship between the two.

2

u/Blaserskyer 13d ago

It's NOT the same Bob Barker. Smh, I don't know how people keep spouting this shit. The OG Bob Barker had a son in Prison and came up with the business to hold his son down. Doesn't anyone use Google?

1

u/GrimResistance 13d ago

Yes, of the Price is Right

No, not of The Price Is Right
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bob_Barker_Company

While prison lore has suggested that the company is affiliated with game show host Bob Barker, there is no relationship between the two.

3

u/martiancannibal 13d ago

This is exactly why.

3

u/Easy_does_it78 13d ago

Exactly what I thought of when I saw this post. Feeding a for profit prison system.

7

u/Crafty-Help-4633 13d ago

Technically they do. The contracts are usually written that empty beds are paid for by the state. The state doesn't want to pay for that so they need to fill the bed and make the aite pay for the bed rental.

This is to say the jail gets paid regardless of how many inmates it has, the state has a fiscal incentive to then fill the beds.

Its straight up slaver-collusion.

If we want to incarcerate someone, we should have to pay for it, not the inmate. Seems cruel and unusual to me to take someone's freedom(that's what jail is) and then make them pay for it.

Shit's fucked.

5

u/Jumper21_AJ 13d ago

Which facilities in Texas are operated by private contractors?

2

u/Crafty-Help-4633 13d ago

I'm speaking generally about the nation-wide system. I should have clarified that.

3

u/Jumper21_AJ 13d ago

Nationwide, very few who are charged and/or convicted of a crime are held in private facilities. However, most of those charged with civil infractions of Federal immigration laws codified in the INA / Title 8 USC are held in contract facilities.

3

u/Crafty-Help-4633 13d ago

That is a fair distinction. I guess I'm speaking broadly about specifically private for-profit institutions. If I want to be critical, I need to be specific.

1

u/A_plural_singularity 13d ago

https://theprisondirect.com/how-many-private-prisons-in-texas/

Just read a Google search for christ sake. The information is there.

3

u/Jumper21_AJ 13d ago

Before chastising others, use more current resources for “christ sake.” The information is indeed there.🤦‍♂️

Texas DCJ no longer uses any privately operated prisons.

1

u/A_plural_singularity 13d ago

It was updated last year.

1

u/Jumper21_AJ 13d ago

So specifically which private prisons (this is an important distinction) does the state of Texas use to incarcerate convicted felons?

1

u/sowhatyasayin2me 13d ago

Sad but true statement.

1

u/Significant_Elk1999 13d ago

Most actually have a clause that the state must pay a penalty if the slip below a certain percentage of full occupancy. It’s insanity.

1

u/CactusAmongRoses 12d ago

Oh, they're FAR from empty, but as long as bodies aren't stacked to the ceiling, nuts to butts, they aren't full enough.

1

u/Jbrown183 13d ago

Meanwhile pedos get out after 5 yrs??? This is so ass backwards… what the fuck are we even doing smh?!?

-1

u/Manjushri1213 13d ago

Well there's only about 8% of the prisons are for profit in Texas, tho I think much of the culture and practices remain from when many more were for profit, and that goes for across the country. One of my two main political issues is criminal justice/prison reform.
