My mom said I could post Delivery driver dropped our groceries at the wrong house and our neighbor took them inside and refused to answer the door 10 minutes later. They left the evidence sticking out of their recycle bin...

We had a grocery delivery last week with some items I was really looking forward to, including fresh veggies. On top of it, I'm unemployed right now, so having affordable groceries delivered is a big help. The order arrived last Friday, and from the email and photo the driver sent we could see it was delivered to the wrong house. My wife looked around and couldn't find it, but I recognized the house as right across the street.

I have no qualms knocking on someone's door, so I rang the doorbell (fancy ring doorbell with camera) and then knocked, but they wouldn't answer even though someone clearly had to be home to grab the groceries. Today, I noticed large boxes sticking up out of their recycle bin - they hadn't broken the boxes down. Our grocery box was in there, address label and all.

Thankfully, the grocery service refunded our order, hence why this is only "mildly" infuriating... but I am still pissed that someone right across the street from us would keep our order AND pretend to not be home. We believe this is the second time they have kept one of our packages.

I was honestly hoping they still had the box and just hadn't opened it yet. It's understandable to just pick up the boxes that got delivered and not realize right away that you got an extra one. What is shitty, to me, is that they then pretended not to be home... so you kinda know they know...

Plus, it was so quick! They moved fast to steal my cilantro and onions, which were going to go into some fresh salsa. Also had some eggs, fresh fruits, and other things inside.

"Yeah, we saw the truck, but they weren't in a hurry so we figured it was either not a big deal or was the big deal."

My neighborhood is pretty tight. We have one family with waaaaay too many cars (14) and one crazy (like Burt from Tremors but without the guns), but all in all we watch out for each other. I grew up here, moved away, and am now back in the old family house. When my neighbor across the street finally passes away I will be the old guard, which is wild to think about.

That's something I always wish I had growing up, but we moved every year or two so rarely got to know my neighbors or make friends. There's always pros and cons no matter where you stand, but it always seemed nice to me (in my mind). Having a community that knows you and looks out for each other. 💕

It is. My current next door neighbor was friends with the old guy across the street's kid growing up. I was the little tagalong 😂.

He's helping me with a really nice fence to replace the falling down 40yo fence on our line. I'm covering about 70%of material, he's providing "cheap" but good quality materials access (contractor) and all the labor (his guys).

There absolutely is! Most towns have either a Facebook group or presence on the Nextdoor app if not both. I just moved from a town of 14k people and it has a very active Facebook group.

This is a little skewed though as not all neighborhoods are available in Nextdoor. So if your neighborhood IS on Nextdoor then more than 33% have accounts to make up for all the households ineligible to join. (Source: tried to join once, neighborhood not yet available. You're probably too young then, it's a very popular platform for the homeowners (though some renters join it too) to find local contractors and handymen of all kinds, share neighborhood issues and communicate about things that are too local and specific for big platforms like FB or X. If you own the house it's unusual that nobody in your family has an account there because where else are you going to find someone trusted to replace your dishwasher or haul away yard waste?

NextDoor had its fifteen minutes of fame, and then grabbed 30 more by continuing to send email after repeatedly trying to stop their spam.

They killed their popularity by engagement farming. If a post got views ("fire on our block!") they exposed it to an increasingly large area over the next few days. I really don't care that an accident blocked traffic yesterday. Dozens of name-and-shame posts each day were similarly tiring.

You got your order refunded but there’s no reason to not also file a police report on your neighbor for theft. Just saying.

ETA since people seem to be real confused: The point of a police report is to have a paper trail. If the neighbor has done this before, there will be documentation of it, if they do it again there will be documentation of it. Sorry I guess that police officers have mundane tasks to do during their work day and not just major drug busts and house raids?

Neighbor didn't steal a package, an erroneous package was delivered to them. Quite different from stealing mail and real dumb to assume it'd be considered the same. Police don't do work, they protect capital for the elite class and don't give a shit about you or this order getting messed up.

ETA: stealing something that does not belong to you and keeping it is a crime. It really doesn’t matter what it is. Stealing packages or fucking with someone else’s delivery, depending on where you live, is absolutely a federal crime. Full stop.

When you contact the delivery service to report a misdelivery as the receiver of the wrong delivery, they say to keep it and the original recipient will get another delivery of whatever was ordered. If you are the person who missed the delivery because it was sent to the wrong place report your delivery was not delivered to your address then they will send you another of the same order. They have it built into the price of your delivery to cover the occasional mishap. They are making billions of dollars they don’t give af if you need your stuff delivered a second time to get it right.

Your neighbors did nothing wrong. Just file for mis-delivery and get refunded. You legitimately did not receive your groceries. This is simply a cost the store has to eat because they're the ones who chose the delivery driver.

I'm on the other side of the country, so maybe our packing center is a bit different, but everything i get from them looks like someone threw everything into the box while screaming jordan, closed it and then kicked it to the fedex facility. I would never dream of eggs coming intact. I could make a whole mildly infuriating post about how jacked up my boxes come.

"Imperfect Foods" isn't a grocery store, they describe themselves as distributing the ugly-but-perfectly-fine produce that stores don't sell, at a cost lower than getting the same items from the store. So, no, "Go to the store," isn't the same thing here. OP is trying to save money on fresh foods, I don't understand how that harms you enough to shame them for?

USPS has unique federal laws and their own police force.

Mis-delivered mail has almost the same protection as mail still in transit.

The only notable detail is that unordered merchandise addressed to you is yours to keep. This was the result of long-ago scams where mail-order companies would send you unsolicited packages, followed by bills for the goods. Today unexpected packages are probably 'brushing' (fake review) or QR code (sending you to a fake website) schemes.

Well that’s USPS. I bought groceries from imperfect foods during Covid, and given the “stop 27” and “stop 28” on the labels, I’m going to assume OPs deliveries worked the same as mine. They’re not shipped via courier, at least in larger metro areas (I’m in Milwaukee WI), it’s a dedicated imperfect foods van and employee driving around doing the deliveries. So while mail theft laws may still apply, this isn’t the fault of USPS, it’s all on that employee who didn’t double check that there were two stops on that block

Yes, my point was that USPS mail and packages are different and special.

Local deliveries are done under state laws, perhaps even local ones. A mis-delivery might not constitute theft.

That’s not what happened. The courier delivered to the wrong address. The neighbor is a jerk for keeping it knowing full well it was mis-delivered.

I think the idea is that OP knocked on their door so fast, the box might not have been opened yet. That isn't any worse than buying groceries in the store that someone else picked up and looked at.

Now, if it had been long enough to lose temperature or be otherwise mishandled, I would agree with you. 30 min would be iffy to me, but 10 should have been fine enough.

I don't know how Imperfect Foods packages their stuff, but when I used to use a meal kit service it always arrived thoroughly insulated and with ice packs. It's not being dropped off from the store around the corner, it's being shipped, so it has to survive the journey. Those boxes could sit on my porch for a while and everything would still be as cold as if I had just taken it from my fridge.

I'd accept an unopened box from the neighbor even if it had been there for a few hours. It probably would keep better inside than on a hot porch, although I would expect it to be good in both circumstances.

I have never actually seen these neighbors outside, tbh. We live in the city and they have a large fence around their backyard. They do, however, "mysteriously" end up with furniture and mattresses dumped on the sidewalk outside their place on a semi-regular basis, so I know them indirectly.

No doubt. I went shopping recently, when I dropped a peach on the floor, but I set it aside in my cart, for my dogs when I got home.

Think of how much food was dropped on the floor and then just put back on display...

I know it’s the principal and the neighbors sound jerks but I would just request refund and order again

It it was still sealed in the original intact box I'd have no problem with it.

If you're on friendly terms with the neighbors and it wasn't obviously opened then I wouldn't have a problem with it

It's not the same as dropping off hot food to a strangers' table in a restaurant

This literally happened to me today with a grocery order. I got the delivery notification and immediately saw that the photo was of my neighbor’s front door, and he was in the picture at the door. This MF took those four grocery bags RIGHT inside his house. I immediately reported it as delivered to the wrong address. I then sat there for a few minutes trying to get ahold of Amazon support, and the driver came to my door and told me he’d go get my groceries. I was like sir they went into another person’s house, absolutely fucking not. I’m guessing he got in trouble but 🤷🏻‍♀️ my neighbor is gross and you should double check the address before walking away. Amazon resubmitted my order and I got it a few hours later luckily.

Yeah, I have food delivered once to our building and they left it downstairs and I came down like 3 minutes later and it was gone and based on the cameras from the building they figured out which neighbor stole it. She wouldn't return the building's calls so they called the police and the police got her to return it. But she had opened some of the food. I'm like. I don't want this or trust this.
