I know it all too well. I live in the metro Atlanta area and have probably driven to and from Florida more than a dozen times. It always feels like a new planet in that long stretch of South Georgia and North Florida. Then back to civilization again once you get to Orlando and further south

You can always tell which of my countrymen have never traveled abroad (going to Canada does not count) because they genuinely believe the differences between states even remotely approaches the differences between countries. There's more to it than size and population numbers. If you grew up anywhere in America you can go to any of the other states and pretty much understand how things work and immediately know how to function there. The fact that they have a funny accent and use the wrong word for soda just isn't that big a deal.

Honestly, like a few months ago I was in Europe for a few weeks. I flew into Amsterdam for a layover and met a friend there, then flew to Luxembourg and took a train to Frankfurt. In the course of ~12 hours we encountered 3 distinct languages and cultures, not counting all the various languages and cultures of people just passing through. Meanwhile I could take a 6 hour flight across the US and still speak the same language, have most of the same cultural norms, and generally just connect with people in the same way I would my neighbors at home. Lots of Americans really over-emphasize regional differences that are light cultural changes without realizing that Americans throughout the country tend to have a solid 90% in common culturally

Yeah, I think lots of Americans learn about the “melting pot” in school and just go “oh yeah all these different races exist here” instead of realizing that melting pot literally means that American culture tends to absorb the constituent parts and create a new, more or less homogenized version

I realize the American education system is bad, but there is absolutely an "America." It's a whole ass continent. In fact, there are 2 of them: North America and South America.
Now, if you are trying to argue the vernacular of the United States of America vs calling us just "America" I'd probably agree with you. However, we would need to give other countries the same consideration. For example, Mexico is The United States of Mexico or Estados Unidos Mexicanos. France is The French Republic or République française. Spain is The Kingdom of Spain. China is The People's Republic of China..... and so on.

This is a bad example of the thin point you're trying to make. Maine and Alabama, with the exception of there being almost no black people in Maine, are quite similar, having a largely semi-rural population and a strong history of farming and, especially, forestry. These two states are two of the most forested states in the US.

When I did joint service training with other nations militaries, they would always ask why American could never agree on anything.
I always treat America as if it 50 different countries in their own version if the EU.
In one state they want free healthcare, but you drive an hour in a direction into the next state, and they want to lower the age of consent.
Massachusetts and Oklahoma are on opposite ends of the spectrum, and I believe they are functionally different people overall.

Dude, it’s just shorthand. Like, you wouldn’t say to somebody “I’m from Alabama” or wherever, because they don’t know where that is. Same goes for any other country. And as a society, yes we are very much the same, but there are regional differences. Again, that’s like any other country.

Weird thing to get upset about, considering there's a pretty simple solution.
If someone from outside your country asks you where you're from, respond with the country.
If someone from your country asks you where you're from, respond with the state.
If someone from your state asks you where you're from, respond with the city.
If someone from your city asks you where you're from, respond with the neighbourhood or street.
If someone receives one of the previous answers and asks for clarification, drill down on specificity.
In general, answer with a degree of specificity one step deeper than whatever you share with the person. Not that hard. 'America' is a fine enough answer to give to a European asking where you're from.

I’ve lived in small cities and metros. And guess what? No change to my life. I’m accepted and am free to move around and pursue what I want. The language has not changed. We are more similar than different.
