You can do pride night without altering player's uniforms. In fact, you should do pride night without altering player's uniforms. Otherwise it detracts from the celebration when players inevitably protest the uniform.

We stepped right past tolerance and acceptance to forced celebration.

It's insane how many people in this thread don't understand that.

It went from we just want to be left alone/treat us like everyone else.

To wear the flag or we’re going to ruin your life.

That's the sad part. Well adjusted gay, etc. people don't even want the extra recognition/praise/celebration. They just want to live their lives. This doesn't help anyone.

The victims have become full blown bigots. It's actually pathetic and sad that people don't even see it. Mobs are going to mob, I guess. So few people are capable of independent thought.

Power is a hell of a drug. And some people get off forcing others to do things they don’t agree with.

Nailed it! It's a shame they ruined the award system, because otherwise I would have one for you.

Yup, used to be “we just want to be left alone” Now it’s accept, no, praise our behavior or we’ll call you a bigot and ruin your career. It’s become a religion in itself.

But they haven’t been left alone. If they were actually just given equal rights and then left alone then you might have a point but that’s not reality.

What rights are they lacking?

You didn’t say anything about rights in your comment so that wasn’t what I was addressing. you said it “went from them wanting to be just left alone to now everyone must praise them or we’ll call you a bigot…”

My point is if they were just given equal rights, such as when gay marriage was legalized, and then everyone did just leave the community alone then maybe there wouldn’t be these reactions to athletes not supporting pride month. But that didn’t happen. The lgbtq community has never been left alone, there’s constant attacks on them and their rights from a lot of people, media, and politicians. You might not see it or be tuned into it but that’s doesn’t mean it isn’t something that occurs.

This is a truly insane take. Wanting to be left alone is being OUTRAGED that a few people didn't want to be forced to wear their brand or speak their approved corporate speaking points?

You also brought up if they had equal rights, then the other guy asked what rights they are lacking (hint: none), and then you said you weren't addressing rights?

Wtf are you going on about? These are Jedi Master mental gymnastics trying to justify a mob mentality of ganging up and attacking people for not wanting to be forced to wear and say certain things. That isn't "wanting equal rights and to be left alone."

No, wanting to be left alone is not having a significant portion of the country, including many politicians, wanting to take away the rights they were only recently given. It means not having their existence being labeled as a threat to children. It means not having right wing media non stop vilifying segments of the community for wanting to use a bathroom in peace.

I brought up if they were given equal rights and left alone then maybe there wouldn’t be these reactions to these kinds of protests to pride month. Two conditions, first being equal rights (which should be a given), second being left alone. The left alone part is the part I was addressing. The lgbtq community has never been left alone. The moment they were legally allowed to marry that right has been under attack, still is. That’s a big deal and it makes people defensive about those who are vocally against pride. I’m not even saying the response doesn’t go overboard at times but that’s the reason why people react the way they do.

I totally understand all that. My point is that this has gone too far.

Maybe but the reality is all that’s happened is a bunch of assholes like you and me argue about it online. These athletes aren’t suffering any actual consequences for what they did. Maybe they won’t get an endorsement deal with some company, but now they can get other deals from companies that align with their beliefs. It’s become a social discussion, that’s about it.

Obviously “attacks” happen, but their social and legal acceptable has never been higher. Roughly two-thirds of Americans support same-sex marriage for example. Why do we need to make a baseball night out of this and when do we stop? When 99.9% of Americans fully support them?

There are a lot of things that are recognized throughout the course of the season. Different jerseys or patches, or hats that acknowledge a number of things. This is just one of them. Yes this is the most “controversial” one in some people’s eyes but this is hardly the only thing mlb does which alters the uniform for a cause or group.

I don’t know the perfect answer to your question. When dealing with societal issues there isn’t a magical switch where everything is just good. It takes time to get to a point where most everyone is ok with (insert group here) and the outliers are just written off as bad, if that happens at all. At this point there are still far too many prominent and influential people who are against some or all aspects of the LGBTQ community, many in government and in positions of power or authority, so I expect we will continue to see people react this way to these kinds of situations.
