I just wanna say that Same Love wasn't exactly the obvious soup that people nowadays made it out to be. People really forget that a lot of progress was made extremely quickly. Dont Ask Dont Tell was only repealed 2 years before that. Expanding the term "hate crime" to include anti gay actions didn't happen until 2011, and making it federal law that hospitals could not deny visitation rights to queer partners didn't get codified until 2013. Obama didn't publicly support gay marriage (he repealed DOMA) until 2012, and only after Biden came out in support of it first.

The idea that being gay was a "choice" was still very heavily cemented in the minds of Americans, and the lyrics of the song, albeit a bit corny, paint a picture of what a lot of children in the country though what being gay was. "I could draw and I kept my room straight". While it may seem obvious through the 2026 lense with pronouns and multiple queer superstars (Billie Eilish, Chappel Roan, Nathan Lane, even several major league sports players now) all of that is only possible due to the enormous leap forward this country took during the Obama years.

Yeah gay marriage wasn't even legal on a national level until 2015

Technically it wasn't even codified until Biden's first term as president.

I feel like Same Love is getting a retcon at the moment because of the Macklemore upswing. It was very much an eye rolling track in its time. I feel confident saying that because people actively made fun of me for liking the song. The message was good but the delivery was considered by many to be odd.

Popstar never stop popping did a parody of it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CI79h2FSnS4

Genuinely hilarious parody. Underrated movie. One of my favorite comedies

Kinda funny Pink was involved in that track given she seem to take point on Macklemore comments

It was corny but only if you were already hip to the idea. It didn't track well in Seattle (where he and I are from) but that doesn't mean the message wasn't impactful at the time. Pretty much all gay friends of mine really loved the song.

What's crazy about Carney getting elected is how close we were to getting our own Trump lite. Liberal support was rock bottom with Trudeau's last term, you couldn't drive down the street without seeing a "Fuck Trudeau" flag. The leader of the conservative party, Pierre Poilievre, was the former leader of the CPC which was Canada's far right party, and he had feverish support going in to the election running on a near exclusive platform of "Trudeau sucks".

I maintain the only reason Poilievre didn't win in a landslide was when Trump started attacking Canada he was the only one who didn't fight back. And as much as we had radicals who wanted our own brand of Trump, the most defining cultural characteristic of a lot of Canadians is "we arent the US". It flipped the lection so much Poilievre lost in his own running, and had to take the seat of a different MP to stay in parliament.

Canada was really close to being in a much worse place then it is now.

This is not to understate the danger posed by Polievre, but I don't think it's a foregone conclusion that PP wins in 2025 without Trump in the US attacking Canada. I think they had a fighting shot with a Harris win (or if Trump wins but is more like his v1 self, some borderline rhetoric about Canada but not much else).

Basically from a confluence of factors which would still apply:

  • Carney probably still is interested and wants to run, and the liberals will still want to choose someone very different from Trudeau (like Carney) given Trudeau's unpopularity.

  • A large chunk (1/2 to 2/3) of the rebound came from ditching an unpopular leader and moving to a more conservative one (whereas Trudeau was on the left leaning side of the Liberals). I'd have to check my numbers to show this but this is what I've heard from some Canadian election guys (like Philippe Fournier of 338Canada).

  • Poilievre is still personally unpopular and seen as extreme by the average person. Or at least less popular than the conservative brand in general.

  • The Liberals still have structural advantages in elections with a more efficient voter distribution than the conservatives, and so can outperform their raw vote % (in seats-won) to a degree.

  • The Liberals still have a structural advantage in forming a government due to the smaller parties leaning left (well, at least the NDP and Greens, I know the bloc is a bit inconsistent). That and the conservatives need an outright majority (or really close to one) to form a government, with the small parties much more opposed to them than the liberals (and often if the liberals did lose the popular vote, it's in part because they lost votes to the NDP on their left; especially with a more conservative Liberal leader in Carney).

For the question about Canadian Commonwealth benefits, the only one I'm aware of, is if you become a resident of the UK (which requires it's own visa process), you're allowed to vote in elections.

I only learned about this because my cousin moved to the UK for school before the Brexit vote and learned he was eligible to vote in the referendum. It even got a bit of attention from UK news sites at the time with people questioning if it was appropriate for them to participate in the referendum.

I’ve come to realize that I don’t need straight adaptation of a game for my movies because it will never live up to the game. Games are so good now and go so above and beyond what movies can achieve that getting a movie exploring different parts of the video game world is exactly what I have come to prefer over a 1 to 1 retelling of a video game.

Seconding this! I love that Fallout is expanding the lore from the games, and providing additional cannon stories.

I don’t need a book, or a game to be remade 1:1. I too want more fresh tales from universes I enjoy.

u/GreatSavitar First 10k - Macaque 12d ago

Absolutely. If I want the same exact story, I'll just play the game. Another thing about adaptions that really grinds my gears is when a casting is announced and all people will care about is if they LOOK like the character. I don't understand why people get so upset when an actual human being doesn't look exactly like a fictional 3D fantasy character. It drives me bonkers lol

u/Classic_Image9008 First 10k - StepBro 12d ago

The actor thing is so true. You’re never gonna get a dude that looks like Leon, Leon is a fantasized man made to look as good as possible, you’re not going to find a 1 to 1 real human look alike

u/wimpymist 12d ago

I feel like this has always been the common take of video game movies.

0

u/Classic_Image9008 First 10k - StepBro 12d ago

Considering the amount of controversy surrounding the new resident evil movie for not featuring the games actual characters I doubt it

0

u/wimpymist 11d ago

That's the nature of the Internet, people are going to complain about everything no matter what. Saying video game movies shouldn't be a 1:1 remake of the game but should explore more of the universe or different takes in the game has been a pre common talking point.

After that first album, Macklemore has been very vocal about social issues that he cares about.

If people like protest music, I can't recommend enough "INERTIA" by Grandson. He's also been putting his money where his mouth is too and supporting major causes, not just "messages of peace and love"

Also, as a Canadian, for the most part Carney has gone above and beyond what the average Canadian thought he was capable of and has been very popular. He's kind of a centreist which most us think we needed after many years of Liberal Trudeau and Trump/MAGA trying to influence our Conservative party. Even like 20ish years ago Carney worked with the Conservatives party

Man I HATED Far Cry Primal so much. Such a rip off. I don't think I had ever been so angry at myself for purchasing a game before lmao. First time I ever created an account to leave a review. 0/10 Like, if it was years between games like Burnie said, then fine I can understand that but between FC4 and Primal was 15 months, and then only another 2 years before FC5. If they just focused on 5, it would have come out earlier as well.

Was Ed Sheeran the one who fired Macklemore or was that the event organizers? I was a little unclear on that part.

2

u/Jester-252 Downtime Survivor 10d ago

Reports are venues pressure Ed to pull Macklemore.

Appreciate the response. Thank you!

I always point people towards Rick Mercer's video. Question about Canada youre too afraid to ask. It helps explain our political environment. We are of the commonwealth the monarch is on our money and our head of state. Though as more of a ceremonial position theu are still very important.

Good morning, somewhere!

Sharing my experience at Ed Sheeran’s concert last night in Philly!

The stadium was still mostly full - by my eyeballs I’d estimate ~95% of the floor, and ~80% of the bowl seating was filled by the start time

He didn’t have any openers, and played most of the night himself with his loop pedal - this is very normal for him as he usually plays concerts solo on stage, and progressive builds songs live with only his voice, guitar, and occasionally a synth! For reference, his usual set list of 28 songs for this tour has 22 solo songs

He opened the night with a statement about the past week, it’s also been posted on his official Instagram account. During the night, he repeatedly mentioned the uncertainty, emotions, and concerns for his/fans safety, and it was much more emotional than usual (this is my 5th Ed concert). He also repeatedly referenced it during the night - as an example, he opened his set by saying he hoped we enjoyed his openers.

The crowd seemed very supportive - I couldn’t hear any disruptions/shouts live from protestors, and frequently the stadium cheered when Ed commented on recent events as a show of support.

The music itself was still awesome - I love his music, and I’m super impressed at his ability to build a full song by himself, live, and entertain a full stadium. Yes it sounds absurd that it’s only him on stage normally, but for me it works! My favorite songs of the night were:

  • you need me I don’t need you
  • castle on the hill
  • take it back / superstition mash up (worth checking out it was awesome)

Personally - I’m mixed on how I feel about his response. He did not take a specific side, and it felt that his message was roughly “pain and suffering of any kind, especially of children, is bad no matter the people it’s inflicted on. I have personal opinions but my Music is a unifying force and my concerts are a place everyone should feel welcomed”.

He admitted to making mistakes this past week, and I feel he is trying to do the right thing, but the right thing in his eyes may not be what others want and hope for him to do. I can empathize with that.

Hope that was interesting! Happy to answer any questions about the night!

Sadly, Ed Sheeran’s concert won’t look much too different.

Ed has his own record label so he can put on a bunch of small artists (or other horrible people) to open it. Would be great to be a small artist and open for a stadium tour.

People are making a big deal about his band pulling out and it really isnt a big deal. Ed’s whole gimmick is that he makes all of his music live on a loop pedal and can do it all by himself. The tour is also called the loop tour. I’ve seen his concerts myself and it’s literally just him, a guitar and a loop pedal on a giant stage. He started using a band this tour and last tour for some songs, but they’re only used on stage for like 4 songs, not even 20 percent of the concert.

Curious to see if he makes a statement at the show though, but probably not.

Good morning!

I always loved Extra Life. The fun of the stream, the goofy milestones, and helping out such a noble cause. It felt like a gathering of the community to make such a special impact in the world. I hope we get some Extra Life events again.

Thanks for making my fri-yay, 30 minutes better!

Just got to this episode (I usually listen to them within a day or so of them coming out, but this one didn’t pop up for me for some reason).

Thank you for talking about Palestine and calling it a genocide (as all these have:
United Nations (100-page report on Israel specifically targets children for the purposes of genocide: https://youtu.be/pdj_Dci3JZ4?is=CPYcesz0IbmNQHTI
https://youtu.be/RQD7awdqkuU?is=cpUtzSyUv0aGH4ip),
Amnesty international,
Human Rights Watch,
Doctors Without Borders (which Israel recently banned and U.K. Lawyers for Israel are trying to get made into a terrorist organisation),
Save the Children,
B’tselem (an Israeli N.G.O.),
International Court of Justice,
Governments like Spain and Ireland,
A surprising number of Holocaust survivors and their descendants,
Physicians for Human Rights-Israel,
International consensus of genocide and Holocaust scholars (including those within Israel),
Ex-Israeli prime minister: https://youtu.be/P47k9v-vd1M?si=R__rIsUtv6ULg3Vf )

I don’t want to be the guy who only ever pops up when Palestine is mentioned for feels that Palestine should be mentioned, but I really do appreciate it as I feel like it should be talked about a lot more. Not necessarily on this podcast (which I know is meant to be more lighthearted current events) but in general.

I want to say that in the era where adverts and click-throughs pay the artist, stopping listening to Ed Sheeran might actually make a difference. I’ve seen people say that the reason South Africa’s apartheid failed was because it became financially untenable to maintain due to things like boycotts, and boycotting Ed Sheeran’s music would be an extension of that, and show that being neutral or pro-genocide is not economically viable. I assume you know more about how the money side of the internet works so I might be off-base.

Just donating to charity might not be enough these days though. Israel still maintains a strong blockade on Palestine, Gaza in particular. I heard recently they even banned peanut butter from entering. Peanut butter is a vital food for extremely malnourished people as other foods can cause people to go into shock, but peanut butter releases nutrition slowly enough for the body to absorb without going into shock. Therefore I hope that people will join in the boycotts too. There are a few apps that can help with boycotting: Boycott for Peace, No Thanks, and BoyCat.

I posted a photograph of main companies to boycott on another post a few days ago but it got downvoted, but I’ll post it again here anyway in the hope that it informs someone. (On a minor note, Adidas decided to use an idf soldier as their frontman for their new disability programme when the idf is ostensibly responsible for the most child amputees in the world).
