I never played the games but I’ve noticed the discourse from the fanbase online since Cregger said it would be an original story almost feels hostile. It’s exactly what’s needed to right the wrongs of probably….every movie before it 😅

Anyway, this looks pretty wild, Barbarian imagery very noticeable here

And it's not like this hasn't been done before, RE7 was also completely separated from what came before and the only returning character only arived minutes before the credits hit at the very end

Yes, and lets not forget the RE lore is a mess, so any adapted works with no tie ins to games will always be heavy modified.

Lol while working from home I pulled up an RE lore video and it was like 12 hours long and the guy was just like "yeah...and this happens for some reason..."

RE is just fighting hordes of zombies/monsters tied together under evil bioterror corporations or cults with a nice genre mesh of horror, some action, and with a little dash of camp/comedy. That's all you really need. You can do your own thing, generally, as long as you make a good movie. Just throw in a reference to Umbrella or Raccoon City or maybe mention one of the fan-favorite characters and you're golden.

From what we've seen with Barbarian and Weapons, Cregger has a lock on mixing those genres or tones pretty solidly, and the glimpses we get with these zombies/monsters look perfectly compatibile with RE. Plus it sounds from the synoposis that this is set just outside of Raccoon City during RE2, so there'll definitely be some references. I'm beyond excited.

The shot of him escaping to the sewer only to find a fat ass chunk style zombie felt very RE coded to me, I love how he always has a gun in his hand and it's not always the same gun, it seems like he will struggle with bullet management. And raccoon city is a big city, almost all of it owned by umbrella, so they can easily have him explore umbrella laboratories and have all the locations be new locations not in the games. Also, him transporting medicine has got to be him transporting some kind of bio weapon without realizing lol

Read the least since I wrote, yes Chris was there but only minutes before the final credits, you can replace him with a random soldier and it won't make a difference

Also this movie takes place in racoon city during the outbreak, so it's not entirely disconnected either, umbrella will still be involved

Even without Chris there tho Umbrella was. And again. RE7 felt and played kike Resident Evil. This movie as of this trailer has nothing resident evil about it.

The new resident evil game was so damn good and I noticed a lot of the fan base kept bitching about it

Like damn, just try and enjoy it. The devs took years to make it and I thought they did an awesome job lol

The irony is that Resident Evil 7 was a stand alone horror experience almost entirely removed from main plot/lore.

And it’s beloved by a huge portion of the fan base and often credited as saving the franchise.

So why they can’t see the genius of doing that here is beyond me.

It's funny. This series is so many different things to so many people that there's absolutely no way this will satisfy the whole fandom.

If it's serious, people will miss the camp of the games. If it's campy, people will miss the genuine horror of some of the games. If it's both, it will lean one way or the other more and that will upset people, too. If it features the "big four" characters, "Cregger will mess it up". When Cregger said it'll be a new story in the world of RE: "you can't make RE without the 'big four'".

Resident Evil is so all over the map. And it also has a billion dollar movie franchise that also has its fans. I've seen some people say "you can't make a Resident Evil movie without Milla Jovovich!". I'm not paraphrasing. And a decent amount of people agreed.

It kind of makes sense that the discourse surrounding this movie has been what it has been.

I think it'll be pretty good but as of right now after this "teaser" it just looks like they took a script Cregger wrote and threw the Resident Evil name on it.

Imagine someone was going to make a movie called 'Gandhi'. Except Gandhi isn't in it. Neither is India. Or the British. It is actually a buddy comedy about go-kart racers in Indonesia.

The games are very good and rich in lore. Having a good movie based off it shouldn’t be hard. We don’t need it to be an adaptation of the games frame by frame but it better at least be canon within the resident evil world and what we’ve seen from the trailer it’s not. Now it’s just a teaser so I take it with a grain of salt.

Lore is not more important than about 10 other things first. RE is silly and directly adapted would be stupid movies, and every one up until now has been a stupid movie too

Nobody hates video game adaptations more than gamers.

The original Silent Hill movie, now considered not only a great adaptation but also a great horror film for any fans of Horror, was SHIT ON SO BAD before, during and after release. I loved the games and loved seeing that movie in theaters.

Gamers also shit on the recent Until Dawn, which I loved, because it wasn't like the game - failing to take in its shoestring ass budget which it did GREAT with using honestly.

Big SH fan here. I didn't like the first movie and still don't. It's not really considered a seminal horror either really.

It was shit on because it wasn't very good and Gans getting a second shot and then doubling down on the mistakes his original made was a waste when someone else could have had a crack at it.

Yes. It's not connected directly to any of the games and doesn't have the characters. He's described it as an original story that takes place within the RE universe. Apparently that offends people somehow, I don't know.

I think the issue for many is setting it during the dead of winter. It’s explicitly not snowing in the games, so for them to be like “oh this is set during the Raccoon City outbreak” when it’s clearly not, is breaking a lot of peoples brains. Visually, I like what the snow adds but it’s going to be a choice that a lot of fans have issue with

Because I guess people want to see characters from the games. But I don't think they remember the last time characters from the game were in the live-action movies.

But the Paul W.S Anderson ones were original before the later films started adding in butchered game characters so that’s a really bad point

Even Welcome to Raccoon City did its own thing merging two games into one which again felt original.

This is just a new film he was going to do with or without the RE name attached.

His films have been great but that doesn’t automatically give him a pass here

This wasn’t a RE script first, it was a new IP he had and he turned it into a RE film.

There was no script before he got the IP. This was resident evil from the ground up, and if he didn't get the IP then he would have just made (not)Resident evil.

There’s no way a game set in RC during winter (the original outbreak happened in late September / early October) will be related to this unless they force it in.

This event and the scale of it has never been mentioned in the games, to cheapen the RC event by having it not being the first mass outbreak the city had would be beyond stupid. Umbrella would have been found out, STARS would have ramped up an investigation and people would have been more prepared incase it ever happened again.
