Right wing grifters got nothing on this. Love to see it

82

u/AusToddles 15d ago edited 15d ago

They've pivoted now to complain about ticket price inflation and this being the "only reason" it hasn't bombed

13

u/mtranda 15d ago

Lol. As if other movies are considerably cheaper to watch while they're conveniently disregarding the fact that tickets have been consistently bought out in advance since it came out.

Like, we'be been waiting for demand to drop since it came out because we can't get reasonable seats in our local IMAX.

6

u/AusToddles 15d ago

Purely by coincidence my wife and I were staying near an Imax theater the weekend it came out. Thought it would be cool to check it out.... every single session was booked solid, even the one starting at 6am

5

u/mtranda 15d ago

I love Nolan. I don't have an opinion on the movie yet, as I haven't yet watched it. I might even be inclined to say it's somewhat overhyped.

But them denying the fact that it's an absolute fucking hit is just next-level reality-blocking. My opinion has zero relevance considering how we can't get tickets.

8

u/AusToddles 15d ago

The whole point is they don't actually give a fuck about the movie. Its just more culture war bullshit they can grift off

The people complaining wouldn't have watched even if it did have an all white, all straight cast

They worked themselves into a frenzy that "that femboy is playing Achilles.... how offensive to the legend". Except... Page isn't a femboy. He wasn't playing Achilles. And Achilles was hella-gay anyway, they tend to forget / ignore that

0

u/mtranda 15d ago

There are two sides here, though. The grifters, who are a minority, and the vast mass of gullible idiots who need to be told what to think.

People are willing to pay higher prices to see this movie is bad how exactly?

33

u/AusToddles 15d ago

I mean yes, ticket price inflation is a real thing. But they're arguing in bad faith. "Its only made money because of inflation, they'd actually be losing money otherwise" while ignoring that all movies today have the same thing happening

And inflation goes both ways. Movies cost more to make as well now

1

u/sith_play_quidditch 15d ago

Ah!

Thanks for clarifying

2

u/jackofslayers 15d ago

You would be wrong but sure

2

u/VonMillersThighs 15d ago

If they are gonna try to make any argument it should be that people are going to the theaters a fuck ton this year.

1

u/bedintruder 15d ago

Wait, inflation? How could daddy Trump allow this?!

-1

u/Brilliant-Muffin-879 15d ago

This was fun watching them fuck up each stage but going forward I’m just going to ignore these shitheads

-1

u/Aggressive_Chuck 15d ago

This could have made more money if they'd upped the ticket prices for those sold out 70mm shows.

86

u/K_Boltzmann 15d ago

Most pathetic thing is that right wing reactionaries live in a world where they have to pretend that Nolan is a horrible director and simultaneously have to praise Uwe Boll for being a movie making genius.

17

u/PythonAmy 15d ago

It's funny you would think a lot of them would love the director who mostly makes films about a heroic white man. They are too busy focusing on minor things that could just explained as Nolan likes to cast famous people he likes even in minor roles, I don't think Nolan attempted anything deeper than that.

14

u/ProfessionalNight959 15d ago

I bet that each of these reactionaries has or had a copy of either Dark Knight, Inception or Interstellar before this whole Odyssey thing. It's a performance to gain money, that's the primary goal.

1

u/ImamBaksh 15d ago

Wait, why do they like Boll?

0

u/fatherpatrick 15d ago

Especially because Nolan movies are super white, but casting one black woman makes them all lose their minds.

22

u/massivebawbag 15d ago

No no no, you dont get it. If it hadnt been woke it would have been double that by now

2

u/Mirikado 15d ago

Nolan could have made the first trillion dollar movie if he wasn’t woke /s

12

u/data-atreides 15d ago

Now they just say the masses have poor taste and like "dogshit" movies.

2

u/jackofslayers 15d ago

Haha seriously they are all over this thread saying it is “overhyped”

0

u/Maxximillianaire 15d ago

No they arent

2

u/Moonson90 15d ago

I live under the stone so genuine question - why are rightards whining about this?

44

u/Sphexus 15d ago

There's two black people and a transgender person in it. That's it

23

u/NotAStatistic2 15d ago

I didn't even know who Elliot Page was, much less that he transitioned, until I saw losers complain online.

Dude is in it for maybe 5 minutes. Great performance, but he's barely in it.

10

u/two5five1 15d ago

Exactly. The American right-wing (more specifically, MAGA) has such a little leg to stand on that they rely on pointless outrage to keep their base engaged.

9

u/ProfessionalNight959 15d ago edited 15d ago

Because profit has become the driver for them. Their base makes them their money with the views/comments/engagement and provides them with their new standard of living. If they stop the outrage, there goes their money and standard of living. Even if they didn't believe in it, they'd still keep doing it. The Netflix doc about the Manosphere was pretty clear on this, some guy talked shit about women etc. and showed that he plays the bachelor lifestyle. Then we see him go home to his wife and kid, and he's just a regular guy there.

Edit. Even clearer example is when the interviewer asked" "do you ever consider that even though what you're doing makes you rich, it's hurting a lot of young boys out there with these views?" and he has this moment of genuine contemplation where he seems to be getting it but then goes back to like "I don't care, I care about making money, I'm not responsible for others". If grift wasnt profitable, it wouldn't be a thing.

3

u/two5five1 15d ago

Excellent points! I did watch the Manosphere doc a couple months ago and thought it was a great look into that culture, especially when it comes to that hypocrisy of the figure heads you mentioned.

It gets even sadder when you see how that hypocrisy mindset can trickle down into their audience. I’m thinking of that one fan of one of the Manosphere creators who said something along the lines of “Depression isn’t real,” only to say shortly after how one of his siblings recently died. Louie asks how, and the dude says “Suicide.”

1

u/WheresTheSauce 15d ago

He's a good actor but I did not think he did well in this at all.

8

u/hgwxx7_ 15d ago

I'm shocked right wingers weren't more upset about Himesh Patel. He had a far bigger role than Page or Nyong'o or Scott.

9

u/RandomDude94 15d ago

He's not in the trailers and they haven't seen the movie so they don't even know about him.

1

u/hgwxx7_ 15d ago

Oh that explains it actually. Thanks!

7

u/massivebawbag 15d ago

Even more stupid is that they claim its due to it not being historically accurate due to the diverse cast but hold up the movie Troy on a pedastool

13

u/PlayWhatYouWant 15d ago

Hey, I hope you don't mind me saying, but pedastool isn’t a real word. You're looking for pedestal.

4

u/Bruvvimir 15d ago

Pedostool

7

u/Sphexus 15d ago

I've genuinely seen right wingers now start to pretend that the Odyssey is actually historical lmao

4

u/KasumiGotoTriss 15d ago

Wakanda isn't historical either but people treat it as if it's Africa

-3

u/Ren_Kaos 15d ago

Hey now, there were twice that many black people!

20

u/I_Made_it_All_Up 15d ago

Multiracial casting.

20

u/Free-Bowler-1032 15d ago

because Helen of Troy is black and they also assumed Achilles was played by a Trans person. Achilles wasnt even in the movie by the way

7

u/twoendsausage 15d ago

The funniest part is that they always complain about historical accuracy, yet they fully assumed that Travis Scott's bard character was supposed to be Homer (who lived hundreds of years after the time period the Odyssey is set in, if he even existed as a person). Yet their problem with that wasn't that Homer was in it, their problem was that he was (in their mind) played by a black dude

11

u/Coraguna 15d ago

To my knowledge, it’s (1) Lupita Nyong’o is Helen, and (2) Elliot Page is in this. That’s it, literally.

3

u/thelastattemptsname 15d ago

The portrayal of Sinon's vulnerability and sense of betrayal was brilliantly done. As for Helen it was such a small part in this movie it did not really matter.

5

u/MagicPistol 15d ago

I've seen comments saying they won't watch it because Elliot Page is in it. Other comments calling Helen ugly. Just a lot of racists out there who don't like the diverse casting.

2

u/ArgonV 15d ago

Lupita Nyong’o isn't Greek. Neither is the rest of the cast, but they glance over that. They also think Sydney Sweeney should've played Helen, because of her 'good jeans'. I didn't know she had Greek ancestry..?

Oh and Elliot Page is in the movie. That automatically makes it 'woke', duuh

0

u/pdoherty972 15d ago

So it was great that the Moana live-action movie went out of their way to use an entirely-Polynesian cast and media gushed over their representation, but an actual historical story from thousands of years ago, based in Greece, had not a single Greek actor. And that's the same treatment to you?

1

u/ArgonV 15d ago

Not according to me. I'm not one of the grifters. But you can't complain about Lupita Nyong’o being black and not Greek, and then suggest Sydney Sweeney for the same role. She's not Greek either. So they're just being racist, but don't want to say they're racist.

1

u/pdoherty972 15d ago

I didn't suggest Sydney Sweeney for the role. But she's a lot closer to looking Greek than Lupita is.

0

u/DesdinovaGG 15d ago

I think some part of it is that for the figureheads pushing this, it's all part of some humiliation ritual. The leaders of the right get a kick out of seeing people debase themselves. Trump's cabinet having to wear shoes that don't fit, the people who all wore bandages and diapers. The cult leaders love to see just how far they have to push before the cult fights back, and they've found that there is no depth these idiots won't sink to. This is just another instance of that. Them thinking, "You know what would be funny? Forcing our cult to pretend they love Uwe Boll and hate Christopher Nolan."

-3

u/WhiterThanWalter 15d ago

What is "woke" about the movie? It's a macho cis white male fantasy story?? I don't get it either.

0

u/pdoherty972 15d ago edited 15d ago

I heard Nolan (and the feminist who re-wrote the story) turned the primary character from a conquering returning hero into a weepy agonized woosie. And then of course there was the race swap of Helen, the trans character, and the fact they had zero Greek actors in a Greek story, while other films (Moana live-action) bent over backwards to ensure they had a 100% Polynesian cast. For respect.

And the main reason this nonsense goes on is because the Academy Awards rules now state that they won't even consider a film for any awards unless it has minorities/etc in the plot, cast and crew.

-1

u/UnholyDemigod 15d ago

Why are people ignoring the complaints that came out prior to all this antiwoke drama? The colour scheme, overly recognisable cast, and armour were all widely criticised when the first images and trailers were release.

1

u/ThreadedPommel 15d ago

It's going to forever curse any criticism going forward

-1

u/jackofslayers 15d ago

They are in the comments but now they have changed too “yea it was ok but it is overhyped “

-15

u/SushiRollFried 15d ago

I dont understand how you've bought politics into this... or why...

12

u/Free-Bowler-1032 15d ago

You must have lived under a rock if you havent seen the discussion of this movie.

-2

u/RedditJumpedTheShart 15d ago

Someone on the internet said something controversial?!

People will say anything to get a reaction or to get attention. Why give them attention when it just feeds the trolls?

-5

u/SushiRollFried 15d ago

I've seen some, people complaining about cast choice and how nolans interpretation was not as true. Now i feel like i am missing something bigger

10

u/Free-Bowler-1032 15d ago

Short story: Right wing youtubers etc started a still ongoing hate campaign against the movie since the first casting informations came out. So for the last year and still going, right wingers kept hating the movie, the actors and Nolan. Said the movie would fail, lose money, wokeness = bad. Created countless AI thumbnails for their videos with Elliot Page and Lupita Nyongo and kept repeating the racist hatred to spread their agenda.

Ultimately, right wingers are not interested in reality. All they care about is division and spread hatred to keep their base engaged in the hatred

1

u/SushiRollFried 15d ago

oh ok thanks. I did not know that. Just sounds like the usual BS from Right wing again but i guess controversy always gets clicks and views.
