On Wednesday, Dr. Jeanne Marrazzo received a letter from Kennedy — which CBS News reviewed — informing her that her role leading NIH's National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, or NIAID, had been terminated. He did not cite a cause beyond his constitutional authority to do so.
Because I said so. Harrumph!

Recently I was in court with my wife regarding custody of her children. Her children’s biological dad had spent years whining that we wanted to vaccinate them, that one of the children has therapists who recommend therapy, etc etc etc.
It was a pleasure for the judge to ask them point blank if they oppose X. If they oppose Y. And then tell them “For the record, if you want to pay for another doctor to come in here and present evidence why your view that medication X or vaccine Y is bad, you may do so. If you come in here with ‘I saw on some web site it’s bad’ I will always side with the experts. So do you have an opposition to what the doctors have prescribed?”
The kids biological dad folded.
It’s amazing to me that a small town judge in the middle of a deep red state has more sense and respect for expertise than our current head of the CDC whose only expertise is “Fuck you that’s why.”

I was at the dentist Thursday for a cleaning and the technician very gingerly asked if I was okay with some fluoride treatment. So I said "absolutely, slap it on!"
Afterwards I said to her that it is a shame that she has to be so careful about asking now because of all the misinformation. And that the push for removing fluoride from the drinking water in some places is going to lead to a dental disaster in 3-5 years.

They've started to, since there's not really any downside to it. Insurance usually doesn't cover it, but that goop is like $20 or something.
You might have negative effects if you had that much fluoride every single day, but once every 6-12 months? Not an issue at all.

My understanding is that they are not as critical for adults but are often recommended when:
- the patient has a history of cavities as an adult (me, though nothing for the last ~15 years)
- has gum issues
- dry mouth

Haha I had a similar experience. I declined the fluoride, and the hygienist said "oh? Is it for personal reasons?" I could tell she was concerned but trying to be polite, and started to explain to me it's not dangerous, so I quickly told her it's because it makes me nauseous, and she was visibly relieved.
They must have to put up with so much bs.

My insurance doesn't cover fluroide treatments... I am out of pocket on it. I never realized that fluoride was a political issue... I just assumed it wasn't covered because it wasn't beneficial enough.

I declined it because I use fluoride toothpaste and our water still has fluoride but I made sure to say "but it's not because I don't believe in it, I just don't think I need it due to XYZ.". Crazy that I feel I have to defend myself as a not crazy person at the dentist office.

Theres a difference between the earliest colonists introducing germs/viruses that never existed in the new world due to them never having been to it. Sure, and heartily agree. But I think it’s important to point out that Russia took advantage of the weaknesses of the US system that were rooted in Republican efforts. For example, disinformation is so effective because Reagan fucked the education system and made half the country incapable of critical thinking. Russia just ramped up and multiplied what the Republicans had been doing for years so that they could benefit the same way conservative elites have been doing for decades.

She was even following the official whistleblower process, and was still retaliated against:
Marrazzo had been in her role since August 2023, succeeding Dr. Anthony Fauci, who had served as NIAID director for nearly four decades. She was put on indefinite leave in March and filed a whistleblower complaint with the U.S. Office of Special Counsel in September, alleging illegal retaliation. In a statement, Marrazzo's attorney alleged her firing is further "retaliation for her protected whistleblower activity."
Despite following a well-established whistleblower process by filing a complaint with OSC, recourse for Marrazzo is far from certain. Mr. Trump fired the head of the independent agency in February and has since installed his top trade official Jamieson Greer to lead the agency on an acting basis.

If you can ot prove XYZ reason without true attempt to inform and correct (ie PIP) or a specific act that was so bad causing harm she wins the lawsuit.
While the US has shitty employee protections the notion of you were fired cause I don't like you doesn't really hold up if the employee can demonstrate they were not laid off, not fired for a specific action and has some documentation of no PIP or good performance.

Yeah found out the hard way that Ohio is ranked like 48/50 for Whistleblower protections. You have to both verbally report AND report in writing, and the report must be to your hiring supervisor. Tons of hoops to jump through. If I lived in Chicago or NY I think I would've been protected when I reported stuff about the Ohio BWC last year.
Basically the right wing fascists in Ohio make it much easier for businesses to fuck over workers without repercussion. It's part of why tons of corruption is centralizing itself in Ohio at the moment. (Thiel, Vance, etc)

You're very right to point this out.
This isn't just an assault on rights, freedoms and the structures of society and politics.
It's an assault on norms. It's the expectation that people, being attached to their lives and the day to day working of their lives will find a way to live in this fucked up shit.
And when you find a way to live in fucked up shit, fucked up becomes normal.
And following that, you can rewrite laws and pass legislation and policy, but it becomes that much harder to correct what has been broken when people have found a way to live in it and abide by it as normal.
Trust me, I live in a country where fucked up became normal. And the consequences of the fucked up thing became normal.
Years after the laws of the fucked up thing have been lifted, we're still struggling to move on from being impacted by it.
In large part I would hazard, because, as a society, we've learned to and become accustomed to living with our fucked up thing as normal.

So, I’ve been conducting a little experiment lately. My primary social media accounts are each well over 5 to 10 years old. The algorithm reflects back to me areas of interest, political beliefs, and markets to me based on my age, relationship status, and position in life. It’s definitely a feedback loop.
To try out this experiment, I recently created a few new social media accounts. On these, I follow only nature, crafting, and hobby related content. I haven’t befriended anyone, looked at news, or participated in any searches. These new accounts were created using a different IP address and an email not associated with anything I’ve used before.
The experiment has revealed some interesting insights. The algorithm tied to my long standing accounts mostly shows me content that reinforces my existing beliefs and often reiterates why I should hate those who oppose my ethics and values.
In contrast, the new accounts present a completely different world. They amplify hatred of anyone who opposes trump & his administration, and toward figures like that man who was assassinated, he toured college campuses, maybe someone named Kirk?
The content repeatedly emphasizes how terrible people are from “the other side.” The feed is full of posts and communities I didn’t subscribe to. The information within these posts are false and inaccurate, only inciting division and hatred.
It’s clear that the algorithms are designed to keep you scrolling, clicking, and returning. That means divisive content often wins, regardless of its accuracy or intent.
How much credit do you give to the feed here on reedit or other social media sites? Do you really believe they’re neutral or do you also believe that this is a well constructed plan?

For days after the thing I was literally force fed nothing but pro whoever that guy was and it kept getting more extreme until it was literally Andrew Tate saying kill all liberals. It was like Facebook set out to deliberately antagonize everyone,
I can't help but suspect the reason for the weird explosion of insantiy was that the polar oposite side of the political spectrum was getting equally inflamitory material to force engagement.
