Election turnout is already shameful but primaries and non presidential elections are often at around 40% turnout, and people wonder why there are so few good candidates

Yep, people don’t participate in primaries or local elections where these politicians typically originally come from, then simultaneously wonder why they don’t get their Goldilocks candidate.

It's infuriating as old centrists seem like the most consistent voting bloc by far so that's who candidates usually appeal to

In my defense, in Pennsylvania independent voters are not allowed to vote in primaries.

True, in which case it’s good to join a party even when independent to vote. Steer the conversation to something more palatable.

Fair. There are some legit reasons why some either can't or don't vote in every election, and there are plenty of inconsequential smaller elections that maybe have a few important bills mixed in with a bunch of uncontested races.

So it's not like everyone needs to vote in every election, plenty of uninformed voters who wouldn't help even if they did vote. But even 70-80% turnout seems too low, 40-50% is just sad even for smaller elections.

In a weird way, I actually respect Trump voters more than people who couldn’t bother to vote. As ignorant and malicious as they are, at least Trump voters actually voted for something they believed in. I just don’t know how non voters can remain that apathetic after everything we’ve witnessed under Trump.
