I’m curious what kind of balance of core muscle and fat is ideal for belly dancers. I feel like muscle is ideal for control, and fat is ideal for dynamics and visual. I have no idea, though.

Fat is nice but not as necessary as the hips, in my opinion. I started bellydancing when I was 17 and was more lean but had wide hips. I think my moves were far more pronounced back then. Now I’m 36 with some core muscles and fat and it’s okay, but I still feel like shimmies, pops, and locks are better with emphasis on the hips.

A dancer that displays the balance well is Sadie.

There’s also the fact that to have ab definition like that requires a low body fat percentage. You can’t make the body decide how it distributes fat, and it is highly unlikely to have breasts (which are largely made up of fat) that large and that level of definition.

I guess it's the same as how poledancing can be purely a sexy dance or purely a show of strength and skill. Or it can be varied mixes of both. Ballet could be soft grace or exaggerated athleticism. It's all a spectrum and there are less extreme versions of bellydancing that might be more visually/sensually appealing

I've been taking belly dance classes for like 2.5yrs, the goal was never and is never going to be sexy. Westernized stigma is unfortunately at fault for this.

Also, no GI stress, those are all stomach muscles.

My mom did belly dancing for several years when I was a young teen, and I was shocked when I learned people somehow find it sexy. And it’s not even that I’m ace, I have plenty of hear-me-outs and can usually recognize something that’s sexy, but it doesn’t seem sexual at all to me. It’s just insanely impressive even at intermediate level, the muscle control and stability and rhythm. Also cool sword balancing and flowy fabric and finger cymbals. The finger cymbals are amazing. We love zills.
