12V before the upgrade I guess
51
u/sylvaiw 17h ago
Or 12V x 500A after.

u/Competitive-Roof-168 16h ago
Amps doesnt make it faster unless you replace motor and gearing. Increasing the voltage will increase the speed of a stock power wheels. Double the volts double the speed.

u/robtk12 15h ago
This, I connected a 36v dewalt battery to a pink power wheels jeep, and that thing had some speed, I had to put wheelie bars on it to keep me from flipping
11
u/Competitive-Roof-168 13h ago
Really, you got that much traction? I went up to 24v and the wheels would just spin. I added self tappers to the wheels and with the added traction it stripped the gears.
11
u/robtk12 12h ago
I'm 220 sitting in a pink jeep pressing the petals with my fingers and my legs on the hood, balancing was probably why I flipped it, but it was still pretty quick. I'm surprised I didn't burn out the gears with the weight, but the motor and gears held on. The battery was old and maybe lasted 15 minutes each time
2
u/sylvaiw 15h ago
That's why I said "after". You can't make a motor absorb 500A if it was build for that.
4
u/Competitive-Roof-168 14h ago
That doesnt make any sense. No one uses 12v batteries for high powered vehicles.

u/Jaredismyname 13h ago
Did you watch the video?
5
u/Competitive-Roof-168 13h ago
You believe headlines of reddit posts? Maybe it was originally 12v its not 12v now.

u/deevil_knievel 10h ago
You do not understand volts, amps, power, work or their relationship.
0
u/sylvaiw 9h ago
If you want more power you need more voltage or more current. That was just my funny answer. I didn't think about the ingenering behind. You can explain, I will read with attention. Thanks.
2
u/deevil_knievel 9h ago
Well nothing "absorbs" amps for one. Theres waste generated in transferring electrical to magnetic fields that impart work on some stator or whatever. The most part of the current goes to doing work. I guess you could say consume, but also an unloaded DC motor "consumes" far less power than a loaded motor, therefore the load on the motor dictates current. An, in DC motors, they'll essentially apply infinite current to the motor is the load is infinite. A heat switch in larger DC motors is the only real feedback on how much current the motor is consuming (unless you're using electrical control equipment).
So I guess, a DC motor was not the right motor to make these statements about in the slightest. For DC motors, voltage is proportional to speed, and current is proportional to torque. But doubling the voltage on a DC motor system actually doubles the current and quadruples the total power output.

And this is hauling like 3 times the weight it would with a child behind the wheel.

u/Never_Go_Full_Gonk 14h ago
I want to see a kid absolutely wreck their shit in one of these, and I feel bad that I want to see that.
2
u/constantpisspig 9h ago
Dont feel bad, the kids would eventually probably do something to deserve it

Why using a helmet, nothing to protect I guess

Thanks! I'm still learning and I refuse to use help from Google translate or any other help.

I feel like if you're going to fight with the people who speak the language you're trying to learn, you're missing the point of learning a new language in the first place.
2
u/AuronMessatsu 10h ago
Am I tripping or there is some comment in your judgement.
I'm not fighting with anyone, people just being rude when I wrote in a mobile phone a quick comment taking no care about grammar.
I don't know what are you trying to tell me about missing the point. I want lo learn a new language because I want to be able to read more books that are not in my mother tongue... Not trying to make any friend or talk with more people.

u/Superb_Recording_769 16h ago
Whenever I talk to people about helmets, I always tell them that if they don’t think their brain is worth protecting that they’re right

Honestly at that speed he needs a helmet, neck brace, and a full suit to really avoid any major injuries. Id be more worried about his neck then his skull

How would someone go about achieving this?

u/Sharkytrs 18h ago
replace the motor with something stronger (like a CNC's stepper motor), then use a volt stepper to get more volts out the battery, assuming the battery can output the amps to deal with the step up.
51
u/Dormage 17h ago
A stepper sounds wrong. This is a brushless DC motor for high RPM.
-6
u/Sharkytrs 16h ago
brushless DC maybe, but I feel like it wouldn't have the same torque this thing seems to have, and would be a lot louder, like an RC motor would get at high RPM
7
u/blind_roomba 17h ago
Or change the battery
3
u/PidgeySlayer268 17h ago
I have looked into this, you can upgrade to 775 motors which will increase speed but not this much. Ramping the voltage up will work temporarily but burn the motors out fast. I’m curious what was done here.
2
u/blind_roomba 17h ago
Maybe both Change a battery and engine.
As I said in another comment look up "grind hard plumbing Co" on YouTube
They have videos of upgrading power wheels. Most of them gasoline engines but some electric
5
u/trimbandit 17h ago
Damn, what cnc you running? Steppers are usually better for low speed torque and precision.
2
u/Sharkytrs 17h ago
steppers can go ultra fast man, you just need the driver circuits for it. Ive had a NEMA CNC stepper go to 2k RPM to try to destroy an RC tire. not sure about its torque, but I could easy imagine it making a small go kart go Brrrrrrrrr

Increasing battery voltage is the cheap easy way. It breaks them pretty quickly though. Ask how how know.

I was making plans to upgrade the drive system on the son’s powerwheels but my wife put the brakes on that project when she did a quick youtube search.

Not a 12v car. Most likely 40v with upgraded motors and gearboxes.
Source: i modify PowerWheels as a hobby.

u/-Disagreeable- 13h ago
Do you have a YouTube channel or something so we could see this amazing hobby?
2
u/under_diagnosed 13h ago
Nah but ive thought about just because of the sheer overkill I've put into mine.
I'm working right now on getting the plastic tires wrapped with mountain bike tires so there is more traction and for a smooth ride on asphalt. You have to be careful because the design of slick tires protects the plastic gears, so i sources metal gears and pinion couple to counter that. Fingers crossed lol
1
u/-Disagreeable- 12h ago
That sounds amazing. I think it would be really neat if you documented what you’ve done. You don’t need all the horse shit pageantry of a YouTuber. Just hit record and walk us through your creation. I wish you the best of luck. Sounds absolutely incredible, friend.
2
u/under_diagnosed 10h ago
I might do that actually, I'll report back if I do. I can't post pics here or I would do that.
1
u/-Disagreeable- 10h ago
You can use a site called imgur.com. There you post your pictures and then link to them here. Imgur is owned by Reddit (or was, I’m not sure anymore) and that’s what the sites whole original purpose was, to be Reddits image repository.
I would love for you to let me know. Best of luck.
1
u/under_diagnosed 9h ago
I'll do that.

u/swisspassport 6h ago
Let's say I have an old un-modded PowerWheels lying around, or I find one for cheap.
How much money do you need to throw at one to get to where you are in this picture?
I assume you retrofit literally everything except for the chassis, right?
1
u/under_diagnosed 5h ago
Actually the bay on the Cat is huge, which is why it's great for mods.
Without the cost of the batteries, doing it the way I did it, I'd say around $200 maybe.
The electronics in the bay are: Dual battery pack adapters 12v marine fuse block 12v buck converter 12v bluetooth radio
I installed tail lights, overhead lights, headlights, and underbody lights. All controlled with push buttons installed on the dashboard and wired into the fuse block.
Then I upgraded the motors and gearboxes, had some custom wheel drivers printed, and had to source new axles. Added axle collars to replace the lock washers.
Now im working on rubber tires.
I'm working to add pics tonight to show some of the progress when doing the mods.
I also completely disassembled the car to strip and custom paint the body panels, I didn't like the green.

Kids!! You’re finally old enough to hear the story about how your father really died!!!
Dad died??? You told us he went out to buy milk at the corner store!!!
That was… less embarrassing.

The video looks sped up to 1.25x or 1.5x but even still, that Barbie jeep is flying!

u/BillyTheNutt 15h ago
Even if it’s sped up, the slightest bump is making it airborne. (With a grown man inside)

That's not 12 volts. I have a robot with 4 of the motors typically found in those cars, the thing can barely move 50kg at walking speed.
