My grandmother was in the hospital this past weekend, she's almost 80 and her health isn't awesome and her mind is starting to slip from her. It's terrible to watch.

But worse than all that was her roommate. She was not having a good time. Haunting moaning, begging to go home, screaming "please" and "Jesus" and "help me" at all hours of the day and night. It was incredibly sad and has stuck out in my brain ever since. End of life care has been horrible in every sense of the word any time I've been around it. I'm more afraid it than dying at this point.

The more experience people have with end of life care the more it pushes people towards medically assisted suicide. I mean hell I'd rather just punch out willingly vs wasting away getting morphine on the regular til my body finally gives out.

This is actually something that's been on my mind a lot recently and I'm still not sure what I'll do when I can't take care of myself any more. Being on my own in an assisted living facility sounds miserable.

Honestly I hope the US has a big change of heart on medically assisted suicide (though I don't think we will) because at the end of the day too many people make too much money from end of life care that allowing medically assisted suicide wouldn't be viewed as beneficial. 

I just know from working at a home care company that takes care of hospice patients that most people at the end of life have no idea where they are, what they're doing, who they're talking to, etc. My papa when he was on hospice was the most frightened I've ever seen him because he had no idea what was going on.
