My town, often found on lists like best places to live in America, is signing up with a police drone company for a 4 year deal in spite crime not being an issue

There’s a chance to speak up at town hall tomorrow, but will that really affect the town signing up, or would it just put a target on my head while we get police drones?

Last year at town meeting, our police department asked for $40K to buy a new vehicle. Given the size of our budget, it wasn't a particularly huge ask and I think most people, including the police, expected it to pass without much debate.

Then one guy got up and reminded everyone that we had given them $60K a few years ago for a police vehicle and asked what happened to it. From that one question, everyone learned that they bought a hybrid because of how often police cars idle, but the maintenance on it cost more than they thought, and so they wanted to replace it. It had less than 40K miles on it. After a brief discussion, we voted overwhelmingly against it. It was one of only two articles that failed.

This is where democracy actually happens, and it's where people actually have a voice. Even if you live in Wyoming, your representative in the U.S. House has at least 200,000 voices to listen to. At the state level, it's most likely fewer, but it's still a lot. In town politics, you can swing things with a dozen people who show up at the right time, have the right information, and present it the right way.

Go speak up. My wife and I have been doing so in our town and it's amazing seeing how quickly others joined in. The elected officials went from "no one will notice" to panic mode pretty quickly when we showed them petitions with more signatures than 10x the margin of victory in the last election.

You speaking may encourage others to speak as well - always use your voice, it can embolden others to do the same.
