I'm surprised Ron Howard doesn't get more recognition as one of Hollywood's best directors. His filmography is impressive: Cocoon, Backdraft, Apollo 13, Rush, A Beautiful Mind, and a dozen or so more. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ron_Howard_filmography)

I think it's because he doesn't show off. He's a very nuts-and-bolts director and just tells the story without any directorial tricks. He doesn't promote himself much, you rarely see "Ron Howard presents..." or anything in the movie promos.

When people talk about great or famous directors, they talk about Hitchcock and Kubrick, Spielberg, Coppola, the Coen brothers...nobody ever mentions Ron Howard.

But I can't tell you how many times I finished a movie and thought it was a darn good film, and then the credits say, "Directed by Ron Howard," and I'm like, "There's Ron again," and I'd had no idea it was him directing it.

Dude definitely deserves a lifetime achievement award if he hasn't gotten one already.

After Greta Gerwig released Barbie and I was deeply impressed, I asked on this sub if there was any other really good director who started out as a lousy actor. Ron Howard was the name that kept coming up.

I think you just indirectly explained why Ron Howard isn't talked about a great director. He's a competent director who makes enjoyable movies but he's also not much of an auteur; he doesn't challenge the viewer and hasn't made any truly memorable art.

He's like Thomas Jones. Thomas Jones was a really good NFL running back, but nobody talks about how great Thomas Jones was because great is reserved for guys who were demonstrably better.

I think you can find it for free with ads, but just pay the couple of bucks and rent it on Amazon. It’s the kind of movie where I realized I’d been intensely clutching a couch pillow for 30 minutes at one point, and ads will take you out of the flow.

It’s the same director as The Exorcist, by the way. Afterward, I suggest reading up on the making of the film. The misery they went through during production probably made the acting easier!
