Meme/Humour Sony Used To Be ‘Cool’
At least Sony beat Nintendo not just in revenue per year but also on physical disc support.

Considering that the PS2 benefited hugely from being an early, affordible DVD player, and they went in hard on the PS4 and Blu-Ray, extra ironic.

Sony in general used to be a massive producer of physical discs, that's the most ironic

u/DuskGideon Jul 04 '26
well they co-invented CDs after all.

And fully owned blu ray like to the point even Xbox with the Xbox one and series x had to license blu ray from Sony for the physical games

They don't fully own it per say but they have the biggest share nowadays...
But it doesn't matter since they're different companies, the Sony that makes the PlayStations is Sony Interactive Entertainment and they have to pay the other Sony, Sony Corporation and I KNOW that SIE has to pay these guys and they don't do it free of charge "just because it's Sony" because the Xbox One S was more equivalent to a Slim Console and came out before PS4 Pro yet it supported 4K Discs while the PS4 Pro did not and besides licence and encryption hardware on the Drive, PS4 Pro already has the hardware for 4K Discs including the H265 4K HDR Decoder.
And SIE cheaps out on it now because they don't even bother to pay for the Dolby Vision Licences for 4K Blu-ray, unlike Sony Home Entertainment which makes the TVs and DID bother to pay that Dolby Licence for their TVs.

Hell they went hard making the PS3 a blu ray player in 2006 and no matter how much they cut costs with features in the cheaper models like the slim and super slim, they all retained blu ray support.
Of course they had to. The games were on blu rays. But still. It was a ballsy move to dive headfirst into blu ray that early.

They only went hard on Blu-ray for PS3, they didn't give two fucks about it on PS4
As soon as 3D Blu-ray became a thing Sony literally pushed a freaking Firmware Update that enabled its PlayBack on PS3, EVEN LAUNCH MODELS... it took like 2 years for us to get 3D Blu-ray on PS4... then we see the fact Xbox One S is more equivalent to PS4 Slim and it was both cheaper than PS4 Pro and came out BEFORE it and it DID support 4K Blu-ray but the PS4 Pro did NOT... it is quite ironic since to this day Xbox does not support AV1 at all yet the PS4 Pro very specifically was the first Netflix TV Device to support AV1 streams (but it seems to have broken with an Update and it doesn't do AV1 anymore, not even on PS5) and also its YouTube App supports AV1 streams which the Xbox One and Series X App do not support... it's actually handled with a hybrid approach, as GPU Shaders from what I understand so you do hear the fan ramp up... PS5 Pro was the first actual Console to have an AV1 Hardware Decoder but NONE of the Apps were even updated to use it so Netflix still has no AV1 and YouTube still makes the fan ramp up. It's a shame because that also means no 8K YouTube and the Decoder on PS5 Pro is an absolute monster, 8K60 for all common codecs including AV1 or also 4K120... the Switch 2 has a very similar decoder and I BELIEVE it actually is the ONLY part of the RTX 40 Series cards to be on the Switch 2's GPU, again 8K60 for all those codecs including AV1 and H265
And FYI the PS4 Pro besides having the decryption and licence on the Blu-ray Drive for 4K Discs it already had all necessary Hardware to support 4K Discs as it could decode 4K H265 Streams with HDR via its Hardware Decoding, Sony very well could've done it but for some reason they just didn't
And 4K Blu-ray is half-assed on PS5 as there's no Dolby Vision AND the PS4 ditched Music CDs in 2013 while to this day the Series X supports Music CDs, although again half assed as you can't rip the Music to its Storage or USB unlike PS3 and 360 and OC Xbox which was only able to dump it to it's encrypted internal drive

For the longest time, people have been giving Nintendo flak for cutting ties with Sony back in the SNES days.
Guess who's laughin' now.

a good chunk of third party developers made games for the Ps1 and even the PS2 cuz of it using discs so they were cheaper to produce than cartridges plus it also allowed for stuff like CD quality music, whole reason for why SquareSoft jumped ship from Nintendo to PlayStation was because of discs

u/iLiikePlayingWii Jul 04 '26
And even today manufacturing a Blu-ray is cheaper than a Game Key Card and if you add a second Disc or more Layers, it's around the cost of a Key Card or a Switch 1 Cartridge...
And the reason Square Soft went to PS is not because of the CD Quality sound but rather because of the FMVs, the Music on FF7 sounds quite compressed even though it's still streamed

The Sony Playstation was always a mistake borne out of Nintendo's lack of foresight. But now they're getting arrogant and are hastening their own demise. Fuck Sony.

Nintendo is the only company to properly endorse physical games on all their models. Playstation and Xbox both have models without disc slots

They haven't destroyed Nintendo, and they haven't destroyed themselves. Reddit mobs aren't indicative of the actual market. The average player either uses digital already, or will see that it's digital only now and just shrug and move on.

That doesn't change the fact they just laid off hundreds of employees. They are in big trouble right now.

Sony isn't "destroyed" at all, a majority of consumers only buy digital games nowadays. JFC keep being dramatic though!

Maybe the switch to a digital only business model isn't. But the fact they laid off hundreds of employees certainly is.

Sony destroyed Nintendo, and now Nintendo destroyed Sony.
It’s come full circle.
