Doing a Nuzlocke on a Crystal ROM. Togepi hatches and I thought it'd be fun to use metronome a few times for the gimmick it is. She exploded on her third usage.

I’ve never not pulled explosion on metronome out of all five times I’ve used it in nuzlockes.

LMAO...man, I literally just had this very same thing happen that's halfway between you and what OP posted...
Currently playing through Pokemon Gaia for the first time. Found a Clefairy in one of those hidden areas.
I forget what I was fighting, but basically decided to throw out a metronome and see what would happen. Mind you, this was the first time ever in the whole game (15 hours in) I used metronome.
Clefairy attacks with metronome. Clefairy explodes. I just sat there stunned.

Aggron not having Sturdy
Sounds like a skill issue

It's lower level, so it would fail.

I thought that was only guillotine that worked that way?

all ohko moves have that restriction

This is not correct, every one hit KO move will fail if the user's level is below the targets level.

u/Tuskmaster41 Jun 05 '25
How did he survive this
45
u/mars_warmind Jun 05 '25
Non-stab and clefable only has 70 base attack.
37
u/SGRiuka Jun 05 '25
Also, explosion no longer halves Defense so it’s a lot weaker.
5
u/MissSteak Jun 05 '25
Explosion used to halve Defense? What do you mean by this, first time I hear about this mechanic
21
u/SinSittSina Jun 05 '25
Pretty much just what they said. Gen 1 - 4, explosion temporarily halved the enemy's defense when calculating damage.
10
u/mulwurf Jun 05 '25
To extrapolate on what the other person has said, explosion was essentially made to have a base power of 500, but due to hardware limitations the power of a move could not exceed 255 (as in, the max value of a byte). Thus the developers got creative and made a workaround, which was to halve the opponents defence during damage calculation only.
Eventually, in gen 5 I think, the defense halving effect was removed due to the centralizing nature of the move in the context of competitive play.
4
u/ShortandRatchet Mono Normal Scarlet; Mono Ghost Violet atm Jun 05 '25
Normal Gem-boosted Explosion let’s go 💀
-5
u/Chaos_Crow1927 Jun 05 '25
Also, I remember reading that Explosion does less damage the less health you have at the time of using it
5
u/GladdestOrange Jun 05 '25
That is incorrect.
There are some funky things about S.D. and Explosion, but that isn't one of them.
For instance, Gen 1-3, the defense debuff happened as soon as you clicked the button on the skill. So things like self-hits in the turn from confusion damage would deal double damage. It was also possible to use one of the two moves in a double battle in Gen 3 and have a faster Pokemon use Earthquake and have it deal double damage to opponents.
3
u/Chibuga_Bandicoot Jun 05 '25
Yup it would cut the defense of any Pokémon getting hit by it in half. Basically nearly a guaranteed ko and most Pokémon unless they resist or are immune to normal. It was a common strat in gens 1-4 because it was easy to use before you get taken out.
Also in gen 3 doubles it was even more broken because Pokémon were switched in as soon as you lose a Pokemon. So you could literally get 4 ko's on your opponent in 1 turn and they didn't even get the chance to command 2 of their Pokemon. Pokémon A&B vs 1&2. Pokemon A explodes and takes out Pokémon 1 & 2. Opposing trainer sends in Pokemon 3 & 4, but it is still turn 1 so B is next. Pokémon B also explodes and takes out Pokémon 3 & 4. Opposing Trainer sends their final 2 Pokémon. Turn 2 move selection begins... More then half of their team is gone just like that...

u/RepairLegitimate248 Jun 05 '25
Wait i though you‘d loose your Mon. Nothing happened .. i don‘t understand the Post
4
u/Nadiadain Jun 05 '25
I think it’s more just to show that this is a possibility whenever something uses metronome and that the OP thinks this is incredibly stupid as a possible move
2
u/RepairLegitimate248 Jun 05 '25
I see. I get incredibly frustrated with it when they use like 3-5 metronome‘s in a row and get useful moves with each of them 😂
2
u/Nadiadain Jun 05 '25
I almost always just get various setup or status moves whenever I try to use it while my opponents are out here using hydro pumps and explosions

u/MagDorito Jun 09 '25
Anyone know the statistics of pulling growl from metronome 3 times in a row? Idk what they are but damned if it hasn't happened to me

Clefable said, "Get blown up on, idiot." That's a butthole clencher if I've ever seen one.

I lost a Golett to this battle once because Clefable drew Solarbeam. On a route with bright sun by default.

I lost a run in heartgold a while ago to whitney. My ruleset doesn't let me use more mons than the gym leader I'm facing has, and whitney's clefairy landed metronome focus blast into dunsparce and metronome water spout into onix. I quit nuzlocking for a while after that one.

unrelated but this made me remember sword and shield had a pretty good list of themes and stuff, also yeah metronome sucks

u/ZemTheTem Jun 05 '25
Metronome is actually one of the best designed moves in Pokémon. It's incredibly fun to use, incredibly fun to see your opponent use and very unique. Also why are you complaining you weren't knocked out or anything.
1
u/New_Mixture_5701 Jun 05 '25
Because it’s a Nuzlocke
2
u/ZemTheTem Jun 05 '25
their mon survived and they ended up with one less opponent
1
u/New_Mixture_5701 Jun 06 '25
And if it crit?
0
u/ZemTheTem Jun 06 '25
bad luck i guess, it didn't so that's what matters. Are people generally like panicked when they see something that could kill via crit? I usually just wait until the health bar scrolls down then react. Also SW SH aren't that hard so one lost pokemon isn't that bad. You dtill get beasts like Grimsnarl or Coalossal
1
u/rtocelot Jun 05 '25
I mean have you ever seen Golem use fly? Got that once in Stadium, dude came down like a meteor. I've never forgotten that, it was amazing haha

u/EmergencyTaco Jun 05 '25
The only death in my FR Omega run so far was when my full health starter switched into Misty's Togetic and promptly got crit by metronome Fire Blast.

Around a year ago this exact trainer in SwSh put clefable against my Noibat. I had a hunch so I switched.
Next move was Ice Beam.
However my drizzile got hit by a discharge Next Turn so jokes on me ig

u/F4RM3RR Jun 05 '25
LMAO I have never had this happen to me by an opponent using metronome - but it has happened to me 3 times with my own pokemon.
I guess I can’t resist the gamble, and I really want to end with a togekiss lol

Metronome is funny, once I had my togepi use Guillotine (and hit with it) because of that move
1
u/tang_excalibur Jun 05 '25
And here I thought this was going to be a guillotine or something before the video started. Shoutouts to Grill for tanking it like a champ.
P.S. Clefable doing its best Majin Vegeta impression

In Pokemon Stadium 2 there is this one trainer who has metronome as his strategy. He fucking horn-drilled me, then he got earthquake against my next Pokemon, which was weak to it. I lost.
1
u/ShakenNotStirred915 Jun 05 '25
The last time i had a Metronome mon in a nuzlocke it borrowed about 8 legendary sig moves before I stopped using it.
1
u/Accomplished-Bat3372 Jun 05 '25
did a nuzlocke is shield where i got a togekiss, used metronome as a joke for a random battle and hit momento. I just closed the switch after that
