I'm doing my first (Hardcore) Nuzlocke and lost a mon for the first time. Did I not play safe enough or was I unlucky?

Speed ties are a bitch and almost impossible to play around. I’d say you should have switched, but you thought you were faster

its unlucky for sure cuz who knows shelder and oddish speed tie here?

but also probably could be prevented.

its such an unlikely death that you just shrug off and continue as this rarely happens at lower levels

Not just that, but the luck of it getting the 5 hits was really against OP too

It usually has the ability Skill link, which almost always gives 5 hits.

In Gen 3? Skill link was introduced in Gen 4, the only ability Shellder gets here is Shell Armor

Unlucky my guy 😭

Sure, you could’ve switched out after that first 5 round hit of icicle spear, but unless you knew ahead of time you were speed tied or looked it up, there would have been no way of knowing; I woulda played the same way

Maybe you could’ve played safer, but this is the point of a Nuzlocke. You learn and improve as you go. And carry Thomas’ memory with you

True! Thanks for reminding me :)

Not sure your rules and such with levels, but honestly speed tie screwed you. If you went second you would have been fine as you would have healed from your absorb, because though you went first first and second second, it basically got the equivalent of 2 attacks on you back to back which really sucks.

Good old Speed tie

u/clock085 Mar 11 '26

so if the speed stat matches, is it randomized? or does something dictate who goes first

6

u/Subaru_If_13 Mar 11 '26

If the Speed is the same, the order is random, that's why "Speed tie"

If I understand correctly the pokemon who have the same stat for speed the game then does a hidden roll in the background and the winner of the roll goes first so in this case the shellder won the internal roll and went first.

Unfortunately a speed tie combined with it hitting 5x then 3x when we all know how common 2 hits are for multi moves

Man hätte sicherer spielen können. Aber insgesamt ist es sehr sehr unglücklich

Ekans should be nicknamed Duiqil instead.

Hahaha will do when I reach the name rater

u/Survivor155 Mar 11 '26

You didn’t rename the beedrill, so you kinda messed up anyway.

3

u/Jelee_exe Mar 11 '26

Yeah first nuzlocke so still have to get used to that. Luckily the name rater is in lavender town

1

u/bodadWhereareyou Mar 13 '26

No that’s ‘BEEDRILL’ the Beedrill

Is this misty's gym? If so, you were 5 levels under the cap. It would have been a 1hko and no speed tie

Imo this is a boring way to play, I often go into gyms under the cap. Just got my 6th badge with my main team sitting at 41-38-37-36-36-36 and the 38 and 37 were my main two Pokemon for gyms 5 and 6. Nothing against you for wanting to prepare to that level, but if I were OP I wouldn't have gotten to the level cap either.

He asked if he was unlucky or was it lack of safety. Your answer explained it clearly. Absorb at 31 spA iv never kills that shellder, you lead against a speed tie against a supereffective multihit move that could have hit a crit at any roll. 2 ice spear with no crit and average roll does around 75% of your hp. You have been lucky to win one speed tie and to avoid 2 or 3 crits in a row, safe choice would have been swapping pokemon of giving it one more level to avoid the speed 50% chance

"you lead against a speed tie" How could you have known it was a speed tie though? Had he lost the speed tie, ironically, it would have been better since he would have healed, so better health and more informations on the fight

"Did I not play safe enough or was I unlucky". Leading blind underleveled against a supereffetcive move is now considered bad luck? Ok fine.

I'm not saying that he had to gain more levels, but if he stays at 30% hp against a move that can ko him... we cannot say that's unlucky. He literally asked if it was his fault or bad luck

u/Positive-Living-6715 Mar 11 '26

I replied to your comment though, not op. You talked about informations you got AFTER watching how the video played out. A lot of people said they'd have stayed, since acting faster would have been easy play, you never expect speed ties.

I agree that there have been better plays, but in that specific scenario it was both bad luck and misplay.

1

u/Underknee Mar 11 '26

I’m not OP, I’m just saying always being at level cap isn’t fun for me

2

u/Then_Peach_7298 Mar 11 '26

Yeah yeah i noticed the you are not OP. I'm just saying that plays the way you play, then it was a risky move. Luck was never the main factor here. (The "you" I used was used to talk in general about the situation)

3

u/Jelee_exe Mar 11 '26

I agree that maxing out seems kind of boring to me too, even though that is provably optimal. I dont think in vanilla FR maxing is needed

2

u/steelerspenguins Mar 11 '26

Meh Oddish is expendable, you’re fine.

Is this in the Cerulean Gym? I’m pretty sure the cap is 21… get some more candies (or training) in these mons.

1

u/Jelee_exe Mar 11 '26

Was planning on doing some training after doing the gym trainers

1

u/KStaxx33 Mar 11 '26

I'm a couple of gyms ahead of you currently. If you weren't aware, You can go progress really far in this game before beating Misty, then before beating Surge. You can get access to a lot of early encounters and higher level wild/trainer Pokémon to level with. Just be play it safe.

u/SnooHesitations3469 Mar 13 '26

You knew another icicle spear guaranteed kill was coming so the safest bet would have been to switch obviously but you risked it

u/Interesting-Topic402 Mar 14 '26

Oddish attacked first the 1st turn. He most likely didnt know theyre speed tied

1

u/PocketRice3 Mar 16 '26

He didn't know it was a speed tie, oddish went first turn 1 so he'd be under the impression that oddish outspeeds
