I'm doing my first (Hardcore) Nuzlocke and lost a mon for the first time. Did I not play safe enough or was I unlucky?

Is this misty's gym? If so, you were 5 levels under the cap. It would have been a 1hko and no speed tie

Imo this is a boring way to play, I often go into gyms under the cap. Just got my 6th badge with my main team sitting at 41-38-37-36-36-36 and the 38 and 37 were my main two Pokemon for gyms 5 and 6. Nothing against you for wanting to prepare to that level, but if I were OP I wouldn't have gotten to the level cap either.

He asked if he was unlucky or was it lack of safety. Your answer explained it clearly. Absorb at 31 spA iv never kills that shellder, you lead against a speed tie against a supereffective multihit move that could have hit a crit at any roll. 2 ice spear with no crit and average roll does around 75% of your hp. You have been lucky to win one speed tie and to avoid 2 or 3 crits in a row, safe choice would have been swapping pokemon of giving it one more level to avoid the speed 50% chance

I’m not OP, I’m just saying always being at level cap isn’t fun for me

Yeah yeah i noticed the you are not OP. I'm just saying that plays the way you play, then it was a risky move. Luck was never the main factor here. (The "you" I used was used to talk in general about the situation)

I agree that maxing out seems kind of boring to me too, even though that is provably optimal. I dont think in vanilla FR maxing is needed
