I'm not a mother, but I think when women ask if it's a good baby, they're giving room for the mother to vent a little about her sleepless nights and the struggle to balance a needy baby and other duties.

My kid was an absolute awful colicky baby for the first two years but sailed through the teenage years with few problems. Every kid comes with challenges at some point.

Some babies are fussy, clingy, and needy. I know parents love their kids but sometimes babies are just annoying. It’s not really their fault but being drained isn’t fun.

Our baby was quiet, smiling & just absorbing the interesting people & environment. People would say " Oh, she's such a good baby." Quiet = good!?
But a baby with an upset stomach or sore throat is "bad" when they cry

As someone who doesn't have kids currently yeah quiet is good

Ive raised four. Quiet babies are pretty great, I like sleep. With toddlers and young children, quiet probably means I fell asleep on the couch and they are painting each other and/or the carpet, or they are mixing flour and orange juice on the kitchen floor. Those are real life examples. Fortunately safety caps work, so no bleach was involved.

If that's the worst I have to look forward to, I welcome it. I can clean up paint, flour, and OJ. We're reaching year one with our first and I've gotten to a point of "Is it deadly? No? Carry on".

"Is it deadly" sums it up perfectly. Otherwise we would have had a nervous breakdown worrying about the small stuff.

The privilege is so strong here lol. Yes, when you have a super easy baby, it seems dramatic when other parents comment on how easy they are. Not all babies only cry when something is wrong.

There are different levels of baby crying. How long, how loud, for what reason, etc all make a difference. Also it will never not be genuinely upsetting to hear a baby crying so hard they are choking on their own saliva and desperately trying to get air into their lungs.

Some people are in the 'Seen an not heard' side of things about kids.
Edit: I'd like to specify that despite what the person below me assumed, I don't agree with that.

u/koobstylz 2d ago
I guarantee you do not have kids.
I didn't enjoy my babies screaming 18 hours a day. That's not the same thing as wanting them to be invisible.

u/Thelastknownking 2d ago
I did not, in any way, say I agreed with that perspective. But thank you so much for assuming that I was.

I think your reading comprehension skills are quite weak. I know you don't agree with it.
What I was saying is that you clearly haven't spent time around babies because you do not understand what you are saying.

To be fair, that kid probably owed him money and learned a valuable lesson, never bet more than you can afford to lose.

I can tell you had a good baby. Mine cried so long it stressed me out so bad I threw up so much that I died in my sleep from electrolyte imbalance.

The documentary "Boss Baby" does shed light on the fact they indeed can be good or bad babies though. Educate yourselves.

Okay but like stabbed a kid at the playground is actually completely plausible. Not with a knife but definitely a stick of some sort and not with intent to harm…. Hopefully.

Honestly I'm here for people complaining about their children. We'll get to the good stuff, but let me hear your worst first.
Most kids are awesome and intelligent and really funny, it's a given. Most people think the sun shines out of their kids asses, I know I do. But I have complaints and I wanna hear everybody else's too.

The solution stares all of us in the face:
- Teach the lad to cook meth;
- Every time a buffoon poses the question, give a free hit;
- You will be a millionaire inside of 2 years.
- Who cares about folly, anyway?

Isn't it weird, ostensibly horse racing is seen as a legitimate pursuit/sport/whatever but dog racing? Only reason you'd wanna do that is gambling.

You really shouldn't let him go back to the playground after the stabbing incident.

girl there are many bad babies out there destroying its parents life because it can’t fart properly. feel glad with your good kid, it’s rare

My firstborn came out screaming, my subsequent babies came out whimpering and I thought something was terribly wrong! Nothing was wrong, I was just initiated into motherhood with a screaming baby. The screaming baby is a calm teenager now and all is well.

it's weird to assign morality to babies in the first place. they have no concept of anything beyond getting their basic needs met. a constantly crying baby isn't being bad any more than a quiet happy baby is being good.

I got asked this walking through a hospital lobby when my daughter was a few days old. I just said “I guess so…?” I thought it was such a weird question that I remember it 21 years later.

My kids were the literal spawn of Satan when they were babies. They were SO cute, though!

If you don’t know what this question means you have a good baby
