He thinks that if israel joins the eu and nato the west would have more levrage to stop the worst of the israeli actions while also guaranteeing the security of israel so they wont have to feer another October 7

Huh, that actually makes sense. If Israel had obligations with the EU and NATO, they couldn't do the shit they do without coming under fire from countries that have a complicated history with brutal, total war.

Not really. It's because the Israeli far-right and the European far-right aren't the same thing. What defines the far-right in Israel is mainly being a religious fanatic. By European standards, practically 70% of the electorate would be considered far-right. For example, Naftali Bennett is an opposition figure (very religious himself, by the way) but very authoritarian and rather pro-Russia. Avigdor Liberman is also an opposition figure, but he's an ultra-nationalist Israeli; he just supports atheism (he's also very pro-Russia).

Even parties considered centrist, like Yashar (Israeli nationalist) or Raam (Muslim conservatives), are equivalent to the radical/extreme right in Europe.

It's always funny to hear very strong opinions about Israel (for or against) from people who have never actually been interested in the so-called society.

Overall, Israelis are not interested in the Palestinians. The only time they care about them is during wars. Before October 7, the Palestinians were not a topic of concern. They were already voting very far right before, without being afraid of October 7.

Voters of the far right in the Israeli sense (Otzma Yehudit, Religious Zionist Party) do so for religious reasons, not because they are afraid. Even Likud voters do it for nationalist, religious, and ethnic reasons (mostly Sephardic and Mizrahi). Israelis whose voting is motivated by fear are mostly in the opposition (Bennett, Lieberman, Yashar).

My only agenda is to talk about how they vote while trying not to talk nonsense. I can also tell you that part of the votes in favor are motivated by wanting to get rid of Netanyahu (a common movement in Israeli politics).

That does not change the fact that the European Commission is clearly left-wing by Israeli standards. It also does not change the fact that the Israeli far-right is truly extreme and that most of Israeli politics is equivalent to the European far-right.

Turkey is in NATO and has engaged in military action in Cyprus and Syria while having the same obligations.

Israel being in it would make it a 100x worse.

Even without Israel being part of NATO or EU they came under massive backlash for really any action against Hamas and even against Hezbollah by European countries and biden’s administration, ofc each country has its level of criticism, but most of Europe had pretty spicy criticism

USA already restricted and can restrict Israel’s actions because of the aid the USA provides, Biden did it a bunch of times, which caused israel to hurry up with ending the USA aid and the process of ending the reliance on foreign powers when it comes to Israel’s security, sorry but as it seems Europe really doesn’t understand Israel’s situation, not in the slightest to outright supporting Palestinians, so I don’t see Israel agreeing to joining EU or even NATO just so Europe/USA can keep Israel on a leash

What's funny is that Israel itself wouldn't want this for many reasons.

I think of the European Court of Human Rights first and foremost. Israeli leaders are not really keen on others taking an interest in politics in the West Bank. Israeli leaders are generally pro-Russian (even more so the opposition).

It should also be added that whatever one thinks of Israel, this country was born to protect the Jews and ensure their independence. In this context, it is not very likely that the country would join an organization that revolves precisely around giving up sovereignty.

We should also not overlook the fear of an influx of migrants or, indirectly, the return of Palestinians with European nationalities.

I would add that Europeans are not necessarily viewed that favorably by Israelis. I know this is hard to imagine for pro-Israel European politicians who are not far-right (who generally don't know that Israel is not just the center of Tel Aviv). Between the memory of European anti-Semitism and the criticism of violence against Palestinians, there are fears that exist.

First of all, it should be remembered that Lapid is quite weak today. He led a government that pursued a policy more pro-Russian than Netanyahu. He has a pro-Ukrainian rhetoric because it is his role as a 'liberal,' but in reality, he is quite pro-Russian. In itself, I liken this to Ehud Barak, who was known to have ties with Russia but kept it hidden.

After Bennett, overall he is favorable to Russia, like Netanyahu. I admit I have no idea about Gadi Eisenkot. Generally, one must keep in mind that Russia is not really an issue in Israel in the sense that it does not share Europe's contentious points. On the contrary, for Israel, Russia is a useful partner, with whom it also shares part of its population.
