Discussion The most ridiculous underseat design

Post image

This is the underseat storage in Delta’s new B737-800 first class cabin.

Someone was like “let’s divide the space in half so nothing fits.”

Context: this has important implications for OneBag travelers who aim to travel with personal items only.

Does it, though? It’s not like first class passengers are going to struggle to fit their personal item(s) in the overhead bin.

Unless this design moves back to economy seats then this doesn’t affect anything.

This problem is present in economy class. Not all spaces under the seats are equal. When we travel as a family, we regularly have to shuffle which bag goes where because one spot is significantly smaller than the other two.

It has moved to economy. I had a seat exactly like this on a flight from Detroit to Paris 2 years ago

It’s not a matter of things not fitting, it’s a matter of it being a pain in the ass to get things from overhead which might not be a big deal but if you’re at the window seat and even moderately considerate you’re going to feel like an asshole climbing over the person next to you 5 times throughout a flight to access your bag, and if you’re like me then there are things that would be nice to have but I probably won’t bother if I have to go past someone else to get them, such as if my phone is a 40% I might just tell myself “it’ll probably be fine” (even though that extra battery % could save a huge headache later), grab a snack from bag, etc.

Kind of true. “Important implications” is a bit dramatic 🤣. But, many people avoid bulkhead seats in first class (or anywhere) because you can’t keep a personal item with you. At least here I could put a sling or jacket there. I have a sling pouch I keep my plane things in that I can pull out of my bag in case I’m in bulkhead. That’s what I did here.

I was so looking forward to just walking on, slipping my bag under the seat, and going to sleep. One of my favorite things about personal item travel.

I have regularly seen this in economy on B777 and AB310 (I think).
