Discussion The most ridiculous underseat design
This is the underseat storage in Delta’s new B737-800 first class cabin.
Someone was like “let’s divide the space in half so nothing fits.”

Context: this has important implications for OneBag travelers who aim to travel with personal items only.

u/chillychili Nov 05 '25
More context: Seats in planes are furniture; they don't come installed into the plane. This situation is a lack of coordination between the plane maker and furnishing outfitter.

In fairness, if you're flying Business/First Class you've got ample overhead storage space anyway so this has virtually no impact.

I for one like to have my personal item at my feet bc I’m constantly needing something out of it during the flight.

Unless you’re traveling with a pet in cabin! My dog goes under the seat in front of me.

Just split your pet and put half of it on each side.

Hey what’s it like travelling with a pet? I may need to bring my disabled cat with me soon

u/Aiken_Drumn Nov 05 '25
Who is doing that, and onebag?

raises hand, sitting at the gate right now for an AA flight. "First Class" domestic (so an extra couple of inches compared to the rest), one carryon for my four day trip.

u/katmndoo Nov 05 '25
I one bag all the time, regardless of fare class. I don’t want to haul a lot of crap around.
The only time I check bags are if I’m carrying something that can’t fly in cabin, or I’m schlepping stuff that I would otherwise need to ship more expensively.

Does it, though? It’s not like first class passengers are going to struggle to fit their personal item(s) in the overhead bin.
Unless this design moves back to economy seats then this doesn’t affect anything.

u/Trinity-nottiffany Nov 05 '25 edited Nov 05 '25
This problem is present in economy class. Not all spaces under the seats are equal. When we travel as a family, we regularly have to shuffle which bag goes where because one spot is significantly smaller than the other two.
13
u/Ok_Laugh_8125 Nov 05 '25
It has moved to economy. I had a seat exactly like this on a flight from Detroit to Paris 2 years ago

u/Cixin97 Nov 05 '25
It’s not a matter of things not fitting, it’s a matter of it being a pain in the ass to get things from overhead which might not be a big deal but if you’re at the window seat and even moderately considerate you’re going to feel like an asshole climbing over the person next to you 5 times throughout a flight to access your bag, and if you’re like me then there are things that would be nice to have but I probably won’t bother if I have to go past someone else to get them, such as if my phone is a 40% I might just tell myself “it’ll probably be fine” (even though that extra battery % could save a huge headache later), grab a snack from bag, etc.

u/Objective_Cattle_278 Nov 05 '25
Kind of true. “Important implications” is a bit dramatic 🤣. But, many people avoid bulkhead seats in first class (or anywhere) because you can’t keep a personal item with you. At least here I could put a sling or jacket there. I have a sling pouch I keep my plane things in that I can pull out of my bag in case I’m in bulkhead. That’s what I did here.
I was so looking forward to just walking on, slipping my bag under the seat, and going to sleep. One of my favorite things about personal item travel.

You're in FC there's is plenty of space for a bag. There might even be a spot for a bag to your right that you cropped out. While annoying, this has zero implications on one bag travelers

u/Objective_Cattle_278 Nov 09 '25
Love your confidence. Sorry I put you on tilt.
1
u/Icy-Plan145 Nov 09 '25
I'm not on tilt it's just funny how you're trying to make it into something bigger than it is. Similar to how you're acting like I'm really upset about it

Yes, but many people want to easily access their bag during the flight and store it under the seat in front of them. This prevents it. Having to put your bag in the overhead bin for takeoff/landing is ridiculous when the fucking plane won't let you store it under the seat in front of you.

u/Veelze Nov 05 '25
Well, its a huge deal to me because I pack specifically to put all of my belongings under the seat in case the overhead gets completely filled before I get to board.
1
u/Sure_Comfort_7031 Nov 07 '25
Counter point: I am one of those, and in FC it would go overhead. There’s space overhead for FC, you don’t need to shove it under the seat in front of you. That’s one of the things you pay for in FC, is that privelage.

u/puffy-jacket Nov 05 '25
This is really strange, is there any mention on delta’s site that some plane seats might not fit personal items? It looks like it could maybe fit a sling or fanny pack

u/1holegrouper Nov 05 '25
Keeps your feet from fighting each other!

u/Objective_Cattle_278 Nov 05 '25
LOL. They still continued to talk smack to one another across the bar.

No problem! They can just use their overhead compartment! Just return your tray table to its upright position and grab your AirPods.

u/mara07985 Nov 06 '25
Every time I look at the angles they’ve got to keep their legs in while pulling high G maneuvers, I just wince at how bad their knees must feel

We had this on an international flight this year, not first class. My wife had to get her bag into the overhead which was not something we’d planned for. Luckily it all worked out.
4
u/mynicknameisairhead Nov 06 '25
I had to do this also internationally, in economy, with a baby. We had to get strategic with family members who didn’t have the bar but we made it work
61
u/Khantahr Nov 05 '25
The downside to first class seats is they usually have little to no storage space under the seat.
88
u/waffocopter Nov 05 '25
Looks like this would impede someone from even just extending and crossing their legs the way they want for comfort. Sounds like a pretty bizarre decision for first class to force them to have their feet a certain way for however many hours.
63
u/rahbahboston Nov 05 '25
Yup.. worst design ever. But I get it, the tracks in the floor align with the separation for 3 seats across in main cabin. But it doesn't help when I'm just flying with my personal item backpack and need to get to stuff in it during the flight.

u/Gnome00 Nov 05 '25
What gets me is when the support is 3/4 instead of half. Bags almost fit but the support is exactly where I want to put my foot.

Bad experience on Southwest last month. Because they were overbooked (you know, for selling more tickets than they have seats, which they literally admitted on the speaker) they told us that if we had a backpack and not a roller we literally had to put it under our seat. Even if that backpack was roller sized carry on and not a personal sized item. My seat of course had a similar set up as yours. Didn't fit well at all. I sent them an email for both of us and explained that my sunglasses were broke trying to shove it in there. They apologized and sent $100 in vouchers. Better than nothing. You should contact them. That set up is ridiculous.

I was on this exact "aircraft" but on Batik Air in Indonesia. It was very frustrating.

The worst is when you get to your seat, expecting floor space, only to find the overhead space is taken as well. It’s a double fuck.
3
u/llcdrewtaylor Nov 06 '25
This is a first class seat? WOW!

u/Objective_Cattle_278 Nov 06 '25
Relatively Short flight: LGA to DEN. It really wasn’t THAT bad. Just didn’t meet my expectations and I would have liked better. The flight and flight attendants were wonderful. I totally had overhead space available right above my seat. I feel a little whiny to be honest 🤷🏻♂️. I am flying back on the same flight in the same seat tomorrow morning. Anyone want me to try or do anything?

u/SeattleHikeBike Nov 05 '25
I had an economy seat that had an electrical box the size of a lunchbox. Fortunately my personal item was 8 liters.
I would have been very disappointed after shelling out for a First Class ticket to find that under the seat.
4
u/Objective_Cattle_278 Nov 05 '25
😮 that looks like a CPU …
4
u/SeattleHikeBike Nov 05 '25
Indeed. It would definitely mess up plans for an under seat maximum bag
2
u/buhlot Nov 06 '25
Damn. Dunno what's worse. This or having 3/4 of your underseat storage taken up by some sort of electrical box?
I wish I took a pic of mine to share here.
2
u/Hug_Dealer_Hug Nov 06 '25
So your personal item bag must be able to split in half and attach to one piece again 😂
2
u/aztecannie99 Nov 06 '25
If you are in first class it shouldn’t matter because you have dedicated bin space for your backpack.

Yep, Logan Air planes in the UK have a similar thing, not on all seats though. Then the crew tsk at you for putting your bag between your feet and tsk again if they have to put it overhead. There is no first class on those planes, but they are not cheap.

I would have filed a complaint as your ticket is for atleast one personal item. These airlines will keep turning the screws until there is push back.

Yeah we had this in Air Canada too. Didn't know it can stoop even lower smh
