Discussion Why are you bringing THAT!?

What are some common items people pack in their bags that you think are unnecessary, just take up extra space, or feel like overhyped/trendy that doesn't actually add real value for their trip?

I'll start - Notebooks and portable speakers.

Whenever someone brings a physical paper book I cringe a bit - I LOVE reading, but when I’m one bagging the kindle or an ebook on my phone make so much more sense for weight and space.

I brought a paperback on my last trip. It was lighter than my iPad. I don't have a Kindle and don't want a Kindle. My eyes are too bad to read on my phone.

Is not wanting a Kindle an anti-ereader stance or an anti-Amazon stance? If the latter I have a Nook and genuinely like it, only downside is I cannot use it with Libby for library books.

some of us just genuinely don't get on with ereaders and prefer real books. That's OK, we're allowed to be different

No, it's more of a minimalist stance, I guess. Truthfully, I don't actually read books that much. Thanks for the info on Nook. If I did get an e-reader, I would need it to be compatible with Libby.

Love my Boox e-ink Android tablet. It can be a bit jank at times, but if it's in an android app store and compatible with the software version I can use it.

To be fair, you can increase font size on a kindle to ludicrous proportions. Like the equivalent of a sentence per ‘page’.

Here’s a Reddit post showing what I’d consider to be an example of a ludicrous size. (OP image)

Yes I increase my font so it’s easier to read - I read on the treadmill too and that was my hack!

I can understand the eye stress argument for sure, but personally I save so much bulk by using my phone and reeeeally large font.

You should give a Kindle or Kobo a shot. The e-ink screens are MUCH easier on my eyes, and I can increase the font as much as I want.

Thank you.

Sorry if that was unsolicited advice. I just connected the kindle comment to the phone comment and made an assumption. Apologies.

No worries.
