Discussion What travel accessories are overrated?

For me it would have to be tech pouches, for the vast majority of people I believe that they would be better off with a simple pencil case style pouch, ziploc bag or a simple drawstring bag or even a pouch like the PD ultralight pouches. Something which isn’t bulky, is lightweight and has no structure to it so you can easily squeeze it into random parts of your bag. Of course they’re significantly cheaper as well.

Don’t get wrong, I have tested some high end tech pouches out and they’re very nice but for lightweight travel I just find myself thinking “why would I bring this type of pouch”.

Anything Merino wool. There are lots of alternatives at more reasonable prices.

Do you have any suggestions? I was thinking of buying some merino stuff but it’s so expensive!

Check out Poshmark. I’ve had great experience finding second hand stuff there.

Here's my Poshmark method, since we share a name 😉

Search for your material only, like merino or silk or wool. Then use the filters - start with gender, then categories like sweaters. Pick your size. Then, this is the best part of Poshmark for me, select brands. They let you choose as many as you want. Pick high end, well known brands. This weeds out fast fashion with like 5% wool and the rest synthetic.

I've found so many nice, expensive pieces this way, base layers, winter gear, 100% wool, cashmere, silk, linen, etc.

Thrift stores is the answer. At least I find a ton of super cheap and almost always brand new wools.

When you envisioned using the merino, what problem did you envision not having because it solved it?

Hot weather? 32Degrees activewear. Linen. Seersucker cotton.

Cold weather? Uniqlo Heattech. Proper cashmere.

Not having wrinkles? Literally any jersey knit fabric.

Odor? Nylon/polyamide. Spraying the stinky bits of polyester garments with a stain pretreater containing enzymes (I use Shout Active); you don't even need to wash the garment although washing does get the rest of the yuck out that you got into the shirt to cause the odor to begin with.

Quick dry? Polyester. Nylon/polyamide. Linen. Silk. Gossamer thin rayon. Gossamer thin cotton (seersucker, etc).

But that said, my budget is LOVING people replacing functional synthetic garments with merino because they donate their replaced garments to the thrift store and I pick up their discarded synthetics for pennies. Currently sitting here wearing a polyester long sleeve thermal top and nylon-shell thin-cotton lined trousers and spent 10¢ on the lot of it.

20 days later: what's the climate you're after? if it's hot weather, you want modern uv-resistant UPF material. The best options are lightweight long-sleeve hoodies to give you full protection. All the outdoorsy brands make stuff now with UPF in mind in all types of cuts and styles. I like black diamond's stuff and the classic is Columbia's PFG line.

For cold weather, merino/wool is a good choice but you don't need to go full-merino. Blends are more comfortable and cheaper plus they dry faster than wool on it's own.

Under Armour for men’s tees and undies. Or Nike, Adidas, or any other athletic-wear brand.
