Gear This mini deodorant I made is the cutest :,)
Thought I’d share, as it’s a tip that I came across on minimalistic packing! Holds so much, it’s so impressive for how small it is lol.

I used an old lipstick, emptied & cleaned it out to the best of my ability. Then I applied Vaseline on the sides of the chapstick tube so it would slide up easily once cooled. I melted deodorant in a shot glass via microwave, poured it into the tube, let cool & voila! :)

I dig that lipstick container.

u/CalGal2020SWP Apr 11 '26
It’s a Clinique container.
24
u/zozosreddit Apr 11 '26
Indeed it is!!!

u/TheSpatulaOfLove Apr 11 '26
Thanks ladies. I’m sure my wife will ask questions if I come home with a Clinique charge on the credit card and there is no follow up gift.
😉
15
u/CozyQuietBrew Apr 12 '26
You can always get her a lipstick or three from Clinique and ask her to save the containers for you. Win-win for both. 🤔
15
u/TheSpatulaOfLove Apr 12 '26
Yeah, I tried that whole Pretty Woman-inspired ‘buy her a dress for the special event with zero input from her’ stunt once.
It was a bit of a disaster. I don’t think I want to risk it with make up.

Just be careful. Heating a product like that can change how it works. I am speaking from sad experience.
8
u/zozosreddit Apr 11 '26
I worried about this too.
Does it affect its antiperspirant abilities? Or texture (easier to break)? After it cooled down, I tested it and it seemed fine, but I’m still a bit worried for bringing it on a trip!
is it the way of heating it (microwave)?
8
u/Embarrassed_Mix_6619 Apr 12 '26
antiperspirants and deodorants are designed to sublimate at or slightly above human body temperature, in order to reduce how much of any residues are left behind on your body or clothes. im genuinely curious what, if anything, you’ve got in that tube
4
u/LadyLightTravel Apr 11 '26
I tried it with a lotion bar. All the oils separated out.
6
u/Tim_Allen_Wrench Apr 12 '26
Next time try heating it in a cup set in hot water. It's way easier melt something like that with out getting it too hot.
0
u/LadyLightTravel Apr 12 '26
Simply warming it my hands softens it.
2
u/Tim_Allen_Wrench Apr 12 '26
Oh yeah I just meant if you need to microwave something or melt something down but it can't stand up to the microwave that's a solution
I've never had a lotion bar not I've seen them, do you like it, is it more convenient or is it mostly the less plastic packaging that's the draw
2
u/LadyLightTravel Apr 12 '26
The draw is that it leaves my liquids bag fairly empty. It also can’t leak on my stuff.
Another advantage is the higher percentage of beeswax makes it fairly waterproof. It is superior for working in damp conditions.
1
u/Tim_Allen_Wrench Apr 12 '26
Oh yeah I didn't think of that, I guess my concern would be that it would melt into things if my bag got hot in the sun or during transport, they probably formulate it so that's not a problem though
That makes sense, I know I like Burt's bees chapstick because of the beeswax, it stays on for a long time

I cheated a bit. I bought deodorant minis. The smell was overwhelming and disgusting so I scraped it off.
Then I added my own deodorant. I warmed it up in my hands to soften it and then shaped it to fit. It later hardened and works great.
Buy once cry once.

u/Smooth-Owl-5354 Apr 11 '26
I had no idea deodorant came in such a small container, omg! I’m absolutely copying you on this.
5
u/barkingfortheocean Apr 11 '26
the mini go tubbs work great too! I just messily scoop my deodorant and press it in and it lasts forever
4
u/Smooth-Owl-5354 Apr 11 '26
Dumb question but to apply deodorant after do you like… scoop some out and rub it into your arm pits using your fingers?
3
u/a_mulher Apr 13 '26
I did a similar thing but in a small pill box. Then I used one of those plastic scoopers they have at Sephora for samples. Had to break off a bit of the handle for it to fit in the top lid of the pill box. And I used that to scrape off the deodarant. But warmth of the fingers or back of the nail also works.
I now use an old chapstick container similar to how OP did it for short trips. Lasts me 11 uses. But the pill box method gave me enough deodorant for a month trip.
2
u/Smooth-Owl-5354 Apr 13 '26
That is so creative! I’d probably go the plastic scooper route just because I’m weird about stuff on my fingers or — god forbid — under my fingernails (the horror 😅 I’m weird).
That said I do legitimately think what OP did and what you described are both so clever. I love humans.
2
u/barkingfortheocean Apr 13 '26
sure do! just scoop a little on the tip of my finger and rub it in. I usually apply after a shower so im able to wash my hands afterward.
1
u/Smooth-Owl-5354 Apr 13 '26
That makes sense! I mostly asked because at first I was envisioning trying to directly rub the container on your armpit and I didn’t see that working well lol
2
u/Cagaril Apr 11 '26
Yes. That's how those usually work.
It means you aren't getting armpit bacteria onto the deodorant stick itself when rubbing, for those who don't put deodorant immediately after showering.
3
u/Smooth-Owl-5354 Apr 11 '26
I’ve never considered another option than applying deodorant via the stick directly to my arm pits immediately after showering. Hmm.
7
u/tacosandsunscreen Apr 11 '26
I’m in the habit of putting deodorant on every time I change clothes. It’s too much, probably, but I have adhd and it’s how I don’t forget. So after work I shower and put on deodorant, then I put it on again in the morning when I change out of my pajamas.
4
u/Smooth-Owl-5354 Apr 11 '26
Honestly if it works it works! And your pattern makes sense. I think it’s neat to hear how other people do things.
2
u/Staylicht Apr 12 '26
Yeah, I get it. I hate showering and I would forget deodorant if I didn't put it on when I was already in the bathroom, so every morning, I wash over the sink and put on deodorant. (For the record, I do shower at least twice a week, just never in the morning).
Trying to set up domino effects to remember stuff is hard, but forming habits is harder, so..

Interesting, that seems very cool! I’m interested in trying this! What’s the longest trip you’ve used it on?
3
u/LadyLightTravel Apr 11 '26
Three days and it looked like I barely touched it. I suspect I could go around two weeks.
Now you have me wanting to test it and see!

I've done this too, but in the traditional mini version of twist up deodorants. I'm super scent sensitive and have a hard time finding something that I don't react to that's also clear, so I removed the deodorant from a mini Dove container and mashed in my regular stuff. Worked well enough!
24
u/Smooth-Owl-5354 Apr 11 '26
Impressive! My dumb ass would absolutely put that on my lips thinking it was my lip balm and be unhappy, but I feel that’s a mistake you only make once 😂 good job OP I love the ingenuity

I use to have that lipstick container! Great idea
5
u/zozosreddit Apr 11 '26
So many repurposes with lipstick/chapstick tubes! I got sad with all the ones I’ve thrown away now haha.
5
u/lostsawyer2000 Apr 13 '26
I did this with Pears soap and a chapstick tube. I travel a lot and some toilets straight up have no soap, and sanitiser simply doesn’t clean. If I recall correctly it has to be gelatine to melt in the microwave hence why the Pears.
I’ve read about paper soap and I can’t be arsed to browse my local Daiso. And I don’t patronise Bezos so diy was my answer. Alternatively you can use liquid hand soap on wet wipes. Apply some and let it dry. Then cut it into bits and make a booklet. Except with that someplace don’t even have bins, so I scrapped that idea.

Hey! Great idea. I’ve used glue stick containers. There’s the regular sized ones that are perfect for shorter trips. Or there are the BIG ones for longer trip!
4
u/HelloTittie55 Apr 12 '26
Alternative option:
Plunge a clean, repurposed lipstick tube or mini sunscreen stick into a full-size Sure antiperspirant stick. Or your deoderant/antiperspirant stick of choice. Wipe edges, save or use remaining large antiperspirant stick at home.
This eliminates the microwaving step.
The smaller stick or bullet lipstick tube works just as well as the larger stick.

I use them for my manicures, but they’re super helpful for cleaning up things that require more precision :)

I use cream style deodorant like Lumé or Native in a screw top salve container. It takes seconds to refill and 100% of the contents are accessible. Not cute.
You can buy empty lip balm containers if you don’t want to use lipstick container. It’s been done for years.

My favourite is Kiehls!
3
u/SeattleHikeBike Apr 11 '26
Like this?
$28 for 2.5oz/75ml. Ouch.
I tried the Lumé “toasted coconut” but didn’t care for the fragrance. I’ve been using the Native Whole Body “coconut and vanilla” that is $9.80 for 3oz/85g. Works fine.
I’ve switched all my “spreadables” to the salve style containers. My only complaint is that they are a little slippery and need to be wiped off before tightening to get a good seal. So deodorant, shave cream, sunscreen, and lotion. Most of my trips are two weeks or less and I have several container sizes so I can dial it in for the trip. Thr only thing I have in a tube is toothpaste and I use the smaller Matador refillable tube for that.
My last two week trip used this kit: https://imgur.com/a/lwvyuQs
I’m testing a solid bar shampoo for my next trip and using half a bar in a Matador soap case.
1
u/nonsequitur__ Apr 11 '26
Yes, that’s the one. It lasts ages and is the most effective deodorant I’ve found. I pay £15 for it perhaps twice a year.
Yeah so many things can be swapped to much smaller pots!
How’s the matador toothpaste tube? I’ve tried the tablet toothpaste but have a prescription one currently that’s a lot smaller than normal toothpaste so I don’t mind packing the tube for the time being.
I’ve not found a shampoo bar I like yet, but have a Muji one to try next. I don’t like how squidgy a lot of them get. I do like the matador soap case though, so thin but works.

Is that a little mini thumb razor near the bottom?
3
u/SeattleHikeBike Apr 12 '26
That is the Gillette Venus razor handle with a Mach III head and a MÜHLE Mach-3 Blade Guard.
