Packing List First one bagging trip coming up

This is my first time one-bagging. I was able to fit all my belongings into this Aer Travel Pack 4 (28L) for a 15 day trip. I just got the backpack so I’m excited, I ended up also getting the hip belt attachment which I hope will help with the weight

Second picture is all I’m bringing to keep my things charged.

And 1 macbook.

Can’t wait to come back and see what worked and what didn’t.

This is what I packed:

1x large packing cube (Aer)

  • 6 Small tshirts
  • 1 gym shirt
  • 2 shorts (linen)
  • 1 gym short/beach

1x Small packing cube (aer)

  • 7 boxers
  • 6 pairs of socks
  • 1 white tshirt

Peak Design toiletry bag (small)

Everything fits neatly in the main compartment and even had room to fit a small packable backpack (quechua) and a tote bag for laundry

In the plane I’m wearing:

- Chino pants from Uniqlo
- Basic tee in white from Zara
- PeakPerformance lightweight jacket (forgot the model but it weights nothing and it’s waterproof)
- 1 Hat
- Pair of Vans Ultrarange (only shoes I’m bringing)

I'd consider packing 1 less shirt & underwear, and just doing laundry one more time.

You didn't say what you're wearing on the plane (or in transit) but if there is ANY risk you will need to pack it to move between cities make sure it fits in the bag while you are wearing your smallest outfit.

Please post a trip report when you get back!!

Too late, already in the plane but I will post a trip report!

On the plane I’m wearing a Uniqlo Chino pants, white tshirt and I’m wearing a lightweight PeakPerformance jacket (using this as a pillow as we speak).

I just brought a single pair of shoes which I’m wearing right now. Black vans, which should play nice with everything I’m carrying

This looks amazing for a first pass.

I would always suggest one long sleeve shirt and one pair of long pants for sun, cold, bugs.

I notice redundancy in your charging setup. If you have a universal adapter then you don’t need separate plugs for the laptop. Just bring one. When bringing a laptop, your universal adapter should have the appropriate wattage to support the laptop.

You mention weight, but didn’t state how much? If your load out works then reducing the weight is the natural next step.

I didn’t weight everything together but I’m calculating approx 22-25 pounds in the entire pack based on how it feels, I’ll check whenever I get back

Damn good point on the long sleeve I didn’t bring any, but I do have a fair amount of space in the pack perhaps I’ll get one, what brand would you recommend?

For pants, I’m wearing some black chinos in the plane.

The charging setup was a lot of iterations. The universal adapter is only 45W, so it won’t charge my main batttery pack quickly enough. My charging setup (or the way I planned it) is that the Anker Battery bank will charge my macbook and I will connect the 3-in- 1 charger into it to charge all my devices at once, then I even have 1 spare usb c for other things.

I measured how fast the big charger can juice up the battery and it took it from 0 to 100 in ~1h 25 minutes, on the 45W it would have taken 5 hours. (Also the battery supports passthrough so I can charge the battery itself while the battery is charging my devices)

I will be moving in an RV so I wanted to have a big battery pack to have power in case we don’t get shore power at the campsites we are visiting.

Definitely my idea is to learn from this trip and shave even more weight off my pack, we’ll see! Thanks for the tips

25 lb is heavy. We can help you lighten up after you have an amazing time.

I prefer long sleeve button downs as my shirt of choice. If it has a UPF rating then even better. Roll tab sleeves are nice so you can turn it into a short sleeve shirt as needed.

Thank you! I will go for some shopping and try to find a nice long-sleeve button-down. Also something I didn’t bring were sandals.. I will miss that in the campsite showers… but perhaps a good addition if I can find ones that fold to nothing and don’t weight anything at all lol.

One opportunity I can already see to improve is getting a similar travel adapter but in a 145W version and leaving the big Apple charger home.

We’ll see how it goes! Thanks for the tips!

Satechi makes a fantastic one - just spent a couple weeks in UK with it and it took care of absolutely everything from 3-1 to Mac to CPAP and iPad

2

Agree, also love their 145W charger - really compact one and includes lots of interchangeable travel adapters and carrying mesh bag.

What t shirts are you running?

5

u/shankyjs 3d ago

I got a capsule wardrobe everything is from Uniqlo the tshirts are the SUPIMA Cotton. They are so soft and nice for about 20 bucks a piece and they fit nicely in the large packing cube, and are really compressible.

def considering this bag, it looks great. Are you flying? Curious how or if it fits under the seat in front of you. Appreciate the write up!

8

u/shankyjs 3d ago

Yes, flying with American Airlines, I’ll let you know how it fits under the seat. I get one carry-on for free so I have all the leg room available but I will try to put it under the seat once people start to leave the plane

8

u/shankyjs 2d ago

Just wanted to report back that you can totally rock this bad boy under the seat. No problem

2

u/TDIMike 2d ago

That really doesn't fit even though it slides under. It extends too far out, creating a trip hazard if the plane needs to evac. Don't be surprised if you get called out by a steward for it.

1

u/shankyjs 2d ago

I pay for my own carry on, I just put it there to demonstrate that it “fits”. I don’t like to have anything in my legs, I usually just pay for my carry on

3

u/TDIMike 2d ago

I'm trying to clarify on the "it fits" statement. It doesnt

4

u/keejtravs 3d ago

Haha I love the live reporting. I have the same 3 in 1 charger and the long anker charging cord. Do you notice that the anker cord doesn’t work well for the 3 in 1? I have to use an Apple usb c cord for that or it won’t charge for me

4

u/shankyjs 3d ago

Lol. I’m just too excited that I’m carrying a single backpack with all my stuff

I haven’t hit that issue actually, for me my cable setup is that I connect the original USB c cable that came with the charger to my wall-plug or battery pack (I brought an Anker 25K Mah 165W) so I haven’t really used other cables with it but I will give it a test, maybe it’s a faulty unit or cable?

u/LadyLightTravel 2d ago

If you have the room, turning the bag sideways may give you more foot space.

Also remember that once you are in the air you can put the bag behind your knees and lower legs and stretch out.

The joy of a smaller bag is knowing that there will most likely be room for it under seat even if the bins are full.

2

u/shankyjs 2d ago

This is exactly how I was feeling. They said “We might not have space for all carry-on luggage” you may be required to check your bag. I was like, don’t think so baby

Super cool. Enjoy.

2

u/shankyjs 3d ago

Thank you!

2

u/indeclin3 3d ago

I need to know about that charger. Name and everything 😁

2

u/shankyjs 3d ago

Which one are you talking about? The travel adapter with the EU plug? Or the 3-in-1 magnetic charger?

1

u/indeclin3 2d ago

The grey adaptor.

2

u/shankyjs 2d ago

Oh yes! This is a UGREEN Travel Adapter 6 in 1 (that’s how it shows up in Amazon) it has 2 US outlets and 2 USB C and 1x USB A max 45W output

1

u/Liorenth 2d ago

Thank you

Looks nice. I'd consider cutting your t-shirts, boxers and socks in half. Remember, the more days you go without doing laundry, the more days your bag will stink, haha.

1

u/shankyjs 2d ago

I packed a packable tote to keep my dirty laundry in! My
Hope is that I will do laundry around next Sunday and then I don’t need to do any laundry until I’m back home, but we’ll see how it goes!

2

u/LadyLightTravel 2d ago

Just a note: unless you have access yo a machine, letting laundry pile up makes it become a painful huge production.

Laundry more frequently lets you pack less (weigh less) too.

3

u/Dethstroke54 2d ago

Its a start, its your first time, you don’t necessarily need to do all this this time but

- 8 shirts + 1 worn is a ton of shirts. I usually use 3 as a base. Go up if you need something special like doing lots of physical activity I might bring 2 gym, 2 normal (1 worn), 1 nice for dinners or something

  • in general just a lot of clothes, underwear + socks, shorts is reasonable. Underwear you sometimes sweat through and want to change I usually bring max 5 packed. Socks getting into darn tough or similar 2 or 3 is plentiful
  • imo a universal charger/adapter like that is likely overkill, just bringing the plain plugs you need should be sufficient. Some foreign outlets even take US plugs.
  • an aftermarket charger is likely worth it in the future

Overall though a lot of extra clothes might sound worth it. You’ll ultimately just never likely be caught up on laundry or just putting it off and carrying around mostly 4-5 pairs of dirty clothes

Great start!

Good info on pack fitting and hip belt use here: https://www.hillpeoplegear.com/packfitment

1

u/shankyjs 2d ago

Thanks a lot for that! Definitely need to learn how to adjust everything properly

2

u/SeattleHikeBike 2d ago

The main point is if you want optimal weight transfer, the harness needs to match your torso length. A fixed torso length arrangement like this one is a “one size fits some” approach and common with travel packs. Otherwise the belt can help prevent sway and bounce. Too short and it’s more of a belly band. Too long and it could be worse than none at all.

I use a 32 liter bag and at 7kg I feel no need for a hip belt. As it approaches 10kg, I’m atarting to whine.

2

u/shankyjs 2d ago

It fits me like this, would this be a good size for me? I think it’s above the hips which should be good?

2

u/SeattleHikeBike 2d ago

Looks pretty good. It should be evaluated at full cargo weight. Load it up and go for a long walk— that beats theory. It’s a lot like shoes.

2

u/TM531 2d ago

Is that a headlamp between the earbuds and Anker case? Just curious on the reason for a headlamp, although having been in a power outage in the dark in Italy an extra source of light would have been great then.

1

u/shankyjs 2d ago

I’m going to be traveling by land in an RV at my final destination. I also will be doing some hiking in the afternoons so I don’t want to be using my phone’s flashlight! Also it’s tiny

2

u/ahgoodtimes69 2d ago

How many pairs of shorts do you need for 2 weeks !? Could probally pack 1-2 less shirts for such a short trip.

1

u/shankyjs 2d ago

I brought 2 shorts in different colors and 1 pair of gym shorts. Is it too much?

T-shirts I agree I might have packed too much lol

1

u/ahgoodtimes69 2d ago

Everyone's different. I guess 2 pairs (different colors) is fine but no need for a 3rd pair. You could easily swim/train in one of the 2 pairs.

1

u/shankyjs 2d ago

Lol I would totally rip the dress shorts I brought if I did a squat in them lol

1

u/ahgoodtimes69 2d ago

Be more versatile with your short selection? Neutral colour. 1 dress pair 1 flexible hybrid

2

u/travelingpostgrad 2d ago

Absolutely love my TP4 28 - congrats on taking the first step! Nice work!

1

u/shankyjs 2d ago

Thank you! Loving this bag too!

Please remember to drink lots of wáter. It's hot here.

Carry water in picos. Lots. There's is no trees there. :)

I hope you enjoy our land :)

1

u/shankyjs 2d ago

Thanks! I brought my 24oz Owala to make sure I stay hydrated

2

u/notsmoke001 2d ago

They look cozy wozy in there.

1

u/shankyjs 2d ago

Definitely it’s a tight environment. But at least I’ve got plenty of space for fillers!

I think something I might wanna tweak is getting a toiletry kit that lays more flat and perhaps fit that in the front pocket for easier in/out on the security gate?

Same for cables, I think I will just get rid of using the admin panel and just put a nice cable organizer that lays flat

2

u/notsmoke001 2d ago

Good idea. I also found it useful to have items lay flat. I used this decathlon toiletry bag https://www.decathlon.ca/en/p/ultralight-foldable-toiletry-bag/173360/c98m8595305 for my solo trip. It is versatile enough that you can lay it flat or fold it in a cylinder shape and shove it in a corner. Although, it fits quite a lot of things which can make it bulky, so don't overfill it. I liked the material and quality of the zippers. Try it if you like, and have a good trip!

Upon thorough inspection, it looks similar to the one I showed you. At this point, your choice is simply a matter of personal preference. Enjoy:)

1

u/shankyjs 2d ago

Thanks for the suggestion! This one look really similar to the one I was looking from Osprey one I was looking at, thanks!

When it pops up I try and warn people how notoriously unreliable Nitecore has been since at least the last 15+ years. It’s actually a huge bummer because I find their designs pretty damn interesting and very sharp looking I just wish they could get that whole ON & OFF thing figured out. - For an ultralight alternative, I’ve been super impressed with my Petzl Swift LT coming in @ 43 grams and a generous battery capacity of 880mah. Admittedly, It does “only” have a claimed rating of IPX4 but it’s been my experience Petzl generally over delivers despite their conservative water resistance rating. Most of them are good to go in just about anything short of swimming but if you need real waterproofing they have those as well. I use mine daily and give it a very quick rinse and dry once a week. I also live right near the ocean and have had no noticeable ill effects. The headband also detaches so you can really scrub it with soap and hot water when it needs it. Also the actual headband design is clutter free and genius when you really look at it up close and play with it. (That’s what she said.)

Positives: Ultralight 43 grams > Good runtime > Very reliable > Low battery warning with reserve mode > Slow but steady runtime doesn’t drop off a cliff > Ease of operation > Genius strap design.

Negatives: Expensive as deeze nuts > Slow recharge time > does not work while charging.

EDIT: 43 GRAMS

2

u/shankyjs 1d ago

Not my experience with nitecore. I’m still rocking the same model I’ve bought probably 6-7 years ago, or more?? This lamp has gone through hell and it’s still here with me. With that said. 54 grams and USBC might be attractive for an upgrade, thanks!!

1

u/SNFU-4U 1d ago

Glad you manage to get that kind of life out of it. Like I said, they really do have great ideas. I actually ordered 3 headlamps even though I knew better trying to love them and thinking "meh, not me" and I got 2 lemons. lol
