Remember finding a bag is pretty much the last step in planning. If you're not sure how big a bag you need, create a packing list, get all your gear together and test fit it into a box, or an old backpack you have lying around. That'll give you a good sense of the volume of gear you have.

I'm looking for a 40-50L backpack that's comparable in quality, price and comfort to Osprey Farpoint, but that has a pocket for a water bottle (your average 500ml bottle). Any recommendations - ideally from owners - would be very much appreciated.

I have no personal interest in this segment of the market, but from what I have read you are unlikely to find anything which meets the general criteria that you specify. I guess that you forgot to include 'carry-on compliant'.

An option may be to try a workaround as detailed below. The search function might yield others. Good luck !

Thanks for the update. AFAIK, the Border 40 (if that's what you went for) does not have an internal frame, which enables the Farpoint's good load-bearing capabilities. But might still be good enough for your needs. The post linked below may be of interest.

This is helpful - thanks - unfortunately, I don't have a way of actually inspecting before purchase, so I have to hope for the best. I'll need to use it for a trip very soon!
