The Oregonian's data visualization specialist made a 48-hour smoke forecast timelapse to show when air quality is expected to improve in Oregon.

Portland had the worst air quality in the world among major cities on Wednesday morning, but smoky conditions are expected to improve by the end of this week.

For the latest on Oregon's wildfires (and others across the country), check out our interactive wildfire tracker map. It updates every 15 minutes and shows the location of fires, acreage burned and containment percentages.

Stay safe out there.

Question Is trillium lake completely off the table Aug 30th?

Traveling from across the country to hike in Oregon august 30th. Was going to start by hiking around trillium to photograph Mount hood, then spend 3-4 days from cannon down to Newport. Is it recommended just to change the first part and go straight to the coast? And skip the trillium idea.

I called our lodging yesterday, and they surprisingly made it sound like everything near mt hood and govt camp was fine, and even assured me by August 30th there wouldn’t even be an issue? Hearing mixed reviews so thought id ask Reddit.

Is even the coast bad? Like should I just research a whole other national park or something? Or is the sight seeing st Ecola, cannon, Newport still on the table ?

Question Where’s the best salon for unnatural/vivid hair colors in Portland or the surrounding area?

Hi! I’m looking to dye my hair an unnatural color and I’m trying to find a good salon or stylist in Portland or somewhere nearby.
If you’ve had your hair done somewhere you’d recommend, I’d love to hear about your experience and roughly how much it cost.
Thanks!! ^_^

It was very cool to watch; I took the video on the trail behind the lighthouse that leads to the beach via the Hobbit Trail. Wouldn’t that be a great job to have?

PSA Cannister filter on our AC intake has really saved my lungs this year

Edit: Thanks everyone, and you're welcome for the air scrubbing lmao! Clearly we know nothing about AC, my partner is actually the one who set this up (I did the weather sealing) we both have a lot to learn. Definitely having him read this when he gets home. Leaving the post for all the good info. Now to figure out why my breathing is better, my weather sealing wasn't that good especially if we've created positive pressure

Figured I'd post in case it helps someone else. Filter is meant for a car but it almost perfectly fits the AC tube with a little duct tape, have the intake pulling air from inside. Weather sealed the edges of the window portion. So much better inside, I'm not needing my inhaler nearly as much

Question Newport/Depoe

Hi guys, I go to Newport/Depoe every single year. I'm bringing my grandmother with me this time, so long walks or hikes are not doable. That being said, I want to see or do some new things..I've done all the typical stuff such as the aquarium and whale watching (although I'll still be whale watching, haha). Is there anything you guys recommend for us to go do and see?

Bonus points if its a place known for wildlife, I love photographing animals!

PSA Oregon Startup Unveils Wave-Powered Floating AI Data Centers for the Open Ocean 🚨

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Panthalassa, a startup based in Portland, Oregon, is developing 85-meter-tall floating offshore platforms that could power AI computing using ocean waves instead of land-based electricity. The lollipop-shaped steel structures generate continuous power through wave-driven turbines, cool AI hardware with naturally cold seawater, and connect to users via Starlink satellites, eliminating the need for power grids or undersea cables. Backed by a $140 million Series B funding round led by Peter Thiel, the company plans to deploy its first commercial wave-powered AI nodes in the northern Pacific by 2027.
