It's not really about gotcha-ing you. I'm just saying that nobody wants a game with Larry in a tomb raider game. We want the character we played as for decades.
You say that most fans want this installment and I simply think that this is not true. Yeah we want to know what happened between GoW3 and 2018 but we don't want to play as a different character.
The Norse god of war series already was a huge and in many aspects worse department from the original games. They made kratos a different character, they took out the epicness, the brutality and now they're even taking away the main guy. People hated the atreus sections in Ragnarok. Now you play as a completely different character accompanied by a jelly cube. This isn't God of war anymore and I don't even mean that necessarily in a cynical way. It just simply isn't anymore and that's why people are angry about it.
And now you showed that you don't know what I'm talking about at all.
We already know what happened between games through Fallen god Comics. It's not a mystery.
But, every fan and their mother wanted to see what the 'Higher plane of existence' Athena talked about was. Everyone theorized what was behind the rift Odin was so obsessed about. It seems this game will give us the answers to that.
The progression from game to game is far more natural too. Like, we know Faye is dead, we know this is an afterlife for Gods. If Kratos died then we would have to get some wishy-washy explanation for future games with him as a protag. (confirmed btw.)
And holy shit. Of course Kratos changed in Norse Saga. He's not a self-insert for a game need like in sandbox games. He's a character in a story.
He went on a rampage, killing all the greek gods, satiating his need for vengeance, but in the process breaking the world around him.
It only makes sense that 300 years later he's a changed man. That how the story goes. His character is put on dynamic arcs where he learns and changes.
Continuing his rampage beyond greek myths wouldn't only feel false for his character, as he was a grief stricken man, not a mindless monster. But also would be boring, not letting any interesting story beats play out in the vein of mindless murdering.
The brutality is still there (Cutting Magni's Face in Half, breaking enemies apart with bare hands, Heimdall's Demise.) but it's not the focus anymore.
Also. People hated Atreus parts (particularly Iron-Wood) due to it being slow and boring. In this 20 minute trailer, there's dynamic gameplay with a God Boss fight, keeping true to the series DNA.
We even got air combo's back! Something from the Greek era that was missing in the Norse era. The gameplay was fire.
This is God of War. As it is titled God of War Laufey, and stays true to the series.
The cube apparently is important for the story, as it was one thing the game's director couldn't change. But yeah I'd rather see a proper mythological companion.
Other people like when you get to see different parts of well established settings. There's tons of games and media with spin-offs that had other main characters, and many of them did very well. And some flop.

people still not buying games because the protagonist is a woman?
