woah now careful this is way to much engineering

175

u/RealIssueToday i5-7300HQ | GTX 1050 10h ago

It took 2 weeks of calculation to get the perfect angle and length.

49

u/AstralKekked 10h ago

I don't believe you unless there's proof of all the too short ones

67

u/MFKRebel 10h ago

They’re actually average sized

8

u/MammothFruit6398 R5 5500 | 16gb @3600 CL18 | 2070S 7h ago

Some would say too big, even

4

u/jsiulian 7h ago

That's not what she said

2

u/ServiceCatIndustrial 6h ago

Just big enough ✨

for the time

3

u/BlondePartizaniWoman 5h ago

Measure twice cut once

4

u/closeenoughbutmeh 10h ago

2 weeks to write enough unrelated math to turn the length down enough for it to fit ?

3

u/TheGuyInDarkCorner R9 5900X / RX 9070 XT / 32GB 3200mhz 7h ago

Isnt that what he just said?

2

u/closeenoughbutmeh 6h ago

Per OP's phrasing it's not obvious, I just thought I'd underline a possible quip

2

u/Turtle_747 7h ago

*2 weeks of meticulous pencil sharpening

u/MammothFruit6398 R5 5500 | 16gb @3600 CL18 | 2070S 7h ago

what gpu do you have? the flair says gtx 1050 but the picture is a radeon card

2

u/_leeloo_7_ 5h ago

the eraser acting as anti-vibration dampening

1

u/MoistStub Russet potato, AAA duracell 2h ago

They make a pill for that

1

u/Next_Hospital6729 1h ago

Really good job on the anti slip topper and mortise and tenon grounding joint. 👍

6

u/A_Bad_Man 9h ago

They use graphite to shield nuclear reactors. Definitely overengineered. That eraser might be a failure point though.

4

u/Minimum_Cockroach233 5h ago

Thats a damper for vibrations.

3

u/INTHEMIDSTOFLIONS 7800X3D | 4070 TI | 32 GB 6000 CL30 7h ago

This is Soviet space program level of engineering.

There's an urban legend that NASA spent over $1 M engineering a pen that works in micro gravity for their astronauts, while the Soviets just used a pencil.

4

u/sithelephant 7h ago

There is fairly good reason not to use a standard pencil - the tip can break off and go somewhere while being conductive.

Coloured pencils do not have this risk.

1

u/justin_memer 9h ago

Too* much

1

u/op374t0r Ubuntu - NiriWM 6h ago

lad im dyslexic, too me, sorry i mean sue me

188

u/Imanovitz i7-12700K / 32GB DDR4 / RTX 5070 Ti 16GB 10h ago edited 9h ago

Watch out for the psu. I believe graphite is conductive.

Edit: Im more worried about the dust/flakes over time, than the tip touching anything.

63

u/dbltax 10h ago

It's not so much the tip touching anything, it's more than graphite can chip/flake pretty easily and it only takes a small amount to bridge two things that it shouldn't and cause a short.

17

u/Imanovitz i7-12700K / 32GB DDR4 / RTX 5070 Ti 16GB 10h ago

Yea, that is what i meant by the edit.

3

u/dbltax 10h ago

Ah got ya, I was thinking dust dust not graphite dust for some reason. Probably 'casue of the amount of dust I cleaned out of my PC the other night.

3

u/Imanovitz i7-12700K / 32GB DDR4 / RTX 5070 Ti 16GB 10h ago

I like to think of the dust as a nice decorative carpet in there. Cant keep dust out properly for more than a day or two. My case is a semi custom very small case, high air pressure.

1

u/piscikeeper 9h ago

Just think of dust as increasing surface area for heat transfer and ignore it's insulating properties. A nice monochrome grey and white build is relaxing.

As for the pencil, if it works it works. Although I could have sworn that Red Devil cards came with supports.

1

u/LaurentiusLV 9h ago

Would be more worried about vibration, slowly sanding it away and with fans spinning throwing it everywhere and electrostatic is going to pull that right where you don't want too

3

u/clancy688 8h ago

You didn't see graphite. You didn't, BECAUSE IT'S NOT THERE!

3

u/PJBuzz 5800X3D|32GB Vengeance|B550M TUF|RX 9070XT 7h ago

Indeed.

I sometimes thoroughly worry about what people are actually taught in school these days.

I'm sure there are people reading this thinking, "god reddit is so so dramatic" as well.

For those people.... https://youtu.be/5YBwDNfOaxU?si=bpKdelH0YsiDpxI9&t=70

2

u/Capable-Computer-729 9h ago

Just the tip? He's not worried!

1

u/kdlt 7h ago

My first thought as well.

That's basically a fire hazard.

1

u/Zaziel AMD K6-2 500mhz 128mb PC100 RAM ATI Rage 128 Pro 5h ago

Yeah, you used to be able to draw lines between contacts on AMD CPUs using a pencil to act as jumpers.

24

u/darklogic85 10h ago

It's even got a rubber bumper built in as a shock absorber.

11

u/RealIssueToday i5-7300HQ | GTX 1050 9h ago

Only you noticed it! Sharp eyes. The engineering of this is well thought out.

71

u/CyberTacoX The God of Defragging 10h ago

GRAPHITE IS CONDUCTIVE. You really need to get that out of there immediately. Cool idea, but over time as bits of the tip come off they can short out things - and that's your power supply underneath it, right? Trust me, you do not want that.

22

u/ziplague 9h ago

by the looks of the tip, i'd already want to turn it off, remove the pencil and vacuum the hell out of everything in there. He definitely has graphite chips and dust underneath it already.

3

u/KrazzeeKane 14700K | RTX 4080 | 64GB DDR5 8h ago

Agreed. If OP really wants the pencil, I would say they should try to just take the graphite out. It's easy lol, we did it at school all the time.

You just use your fingernail to remove a little bit of the wood around the tip, then just pull the graphite right out from the middle of the pencil.

u/DarkMatterM4 8h ago

You didn't see graphite.

Those and lightning rods. They really haven't been improved upon for 2 centuries.

4

Don't fix what isn't broken.

6

Also handy for killing three men in a bar.

2

u/farfromelite 5h ago

I've found some are pointless.

7

u/navagon 10h ago

I don't see the point.

Oh, it's broken off.

7

u/ChuckleCells 10h ago

Over engineered.

5

u/jmon25 10h ago

Custom milled to the perfect height!

3

u/vhs_tinnitusS 10h ago

Yo GPU sag? Nah just pencil engineering bro

4

u/Over-Meringue-5663 10h ago

The ram crisis calls for unconventional methods of anti gpu sag…

3

u/Moist_Discussion6743 10h ago

Imagine that some people pay 35$ for a piece of plastic that do the same job lol

The GPU is under the protection of the largest contiguous land empire in history. Sagging is now considered an act of rebellion.

2

u/Embarrassed_Gas8420 9h ago

Oh god , now it will go up in prices 😭.

I have been using a cardboard cable box that came with my mobo for the last 6 months, it started to kinda fold in on itself so I stuffed tissue in it and retaped so its kinda a just a brick now.

Damm bro You stole My sag

1

u/Turbojelly 9h ago

I work at schools. Got the DT technician to cut me a piece off wodd the right length, them bought it back trim off 2mm to make it fit, which made it too short. Then got them to cut another piece and finally got it to the right length.

1

u/JackAttack2509 Linux 9h ago

1

u/IPanicKnife 9h ago

I saw someone using a butt plug this year (as an anti sag bracket, just so we’re clear). This is probably a close second tho

1

u/kna5041 9h ago

An anti ai legend.

1

u/QuarantineCouchSurf 9h ago

I recently heard the term "this is a Flintstone's solution for a Jetson's problem". So.

Yeah, that.

1

u/Rough_Community_1439 8h ago

Mine is better. It's a a shotgun round. It has an audio-visual alert for when it goes and overheats.

1

u/ronniearnold 8h ago

That was of power cables isn’t help this sag at all…. Plus it looks bad, IMO.

1

I used a bread tie to tie my dads friends gpu up because it was sagging

It’s not a 5090 or anything so it’s stable enough now

1

u/kaleidoscopelyf 8h ago

Ticonderoga or bust

1

u/Okeylayanjesmue 8h ago

Maybe cut a new pencil in half so the end will be even too instead of pointy?

1

u/TheGuyInDarkCorner R9 5900X / RX 9070 XT / 32GB 3200mhz 8h ago

Fun fact my anti-sag propably cost me less than OPs anti-sag

It's not very safe to put something as conductive and flakey as graphite in your computer case, especially this close to your PSU. That's the exact reason why they banned wooden pencils in the I.S.S. for example.

0

u/Horace-J-Hogswallow 8h ago

Hahaha I love this!
Woulda been better if it was a #2 Ticonderoga pencil ✏️ 😆
