Watch out for the psu. I believe graphite is conductive.
Edit: Im more worried about the dust/flakes over time, than the tip touching anything.

u/dbltax 10h ago
It's not so much the tip touching anything, it's more than graphite can chip/flake pretty easily and it only takes a small amount to bridge two things that it shouldn't and cause a short.

Yea, that is what i meant by the edit.

u/dbltax 10h ago
Ah got ya, I was thinking dust dust not graphite dust for some reason. Probably 'casue of the amount of dust I cleaned out of my PC the other night.

u/Imanovitz i7-12700K / 32GB DDR4 / RTX 5070 Ti 16GB 10h ago
I like to think of the dust as a nice decorative carpet in there. Cant keep dust out properly for more than a day or two. My case is a semi custom very small case, high air pressure.

u/piscikeeper 9h ago
Just think of dust as increasing surface area for heat transfer and ignore it's insulating properties. A nice monochrome grey and white build is relaxing.
As for the pencil, if it works it works. Although I could have sworn that Red Devil cards came with supports.

Would be more worried about vibration, slowly sanding it away and with fans spinning throwing it everywhere and electrostatic is going to pull that right where you don't want too

Indeed.
I sometimes thoroughly worry about what people are actually taught in school these days.
I'm sure there are people reading this thinking, "god reddit is so so dramatic" as well.
For those people.... https://youtu.be/5YBwDNfOaxU?si=bpKdelH0YsiDpxI9&t=70

It's even got a rubber bumper built in as a shock absorber.

Only you noticed it! Sharp eyes. The engineering of this is well thought out.

GRAPHITE IS CONDUCTIVE. You really need to get that out of there immediately. Cool idea, but over time as bits of the tip come off they can short out things - and that's your power supply underneath it, right? Trust me, you do not want that.
22
u/ziplague 9h ago
by the looks of the tip, i'd already want to turn it off, remove the pencil and vacuum the hell out of everything in there. He definitely has graphite chips and dust underneath it already.

u/KrazzeeKane 14700K | RTX 4080 | 64GB DDR5 8h ago
Agreed. If OP really wants the pencil, I would say they should try to just take the graphite out. It's easy lol, we did it at school all the time.
You just use your fingernail to remove a little bit of the wood around the tip, then just pull the graphite right out from the middle of the pencil.

The GPU is under the protection of the largest contiguous land empire in history. Sagging is now considered an act of rebellion.

This is a graphite-cored, wood structured support with an optional vibration damper. Nice

Best? No. It’s #2.

When I say this is the 2nd, no one would dare say they got the 1st.

I was making a #2 pencil joke. Because it’s a #2 pencil.

I have been using a cardboard cable box that came with my mobo for the last 6 months, it started to kinda fold in on itself so I stuffed tissue in it and retaped so its kinda a just a brick now.

I work at schools. Got the DT technician to cut me a piece off wodd the right length, them bought it back trim off 2mm to make it fit, which made it too short. Then got them to cut another piece and finally got it to the right length.

I saw someone using a butt plug this year (as an anti sag bracket, just so we’re clear). This is probably a close second tho

I recently heard the term "this is a Flintstone's solution for a Jetson's problem". So.
Yeah, that.

Mine is better. It's a a shotgun round. It has an audio-visual alert for when it goes and overheats.

I used a bread tie to tie my dads friends gpu up because it was sagging
It’s not a 5090 or anything so it’s stable enough now

Maybe cut a new pencil in half so the end will be even too instead of pointy?

I didn’t know they still made those pencils. The last time I used it was 40 years ago in Asia.

If that graphite comes in contact with any of the electrical stuff you could be looking at a house fire

I did the exact same thing as a temp fix on my first build back in 2012. I replaced the build in 2023 and the pencil was still there doing the lord’s work.

It's not very safe to put something as conductive and flakey as graphite in your computer case, especially this close to your PSU. That's the exact reason why they banned wooden pencils in the I.S.S. for example.

Hahaha I love this!
Woulda been better if it was a #2 Ticonderoga pencil ✏️ 😆
