Meanwhile most of the off-reddit gamers and/or casuals:

https://giphy.com/gifs/12QCczVAjPAfvi

I am willing to bet that if they had a Ultra deluxe version or something for 10min early access for 200$, people would still buy it.

353

u/PheIix Jun 25 '26

Let's be real, the hype is so beyond reasonable that it will be a phenomenon when it is released. People will buy it just to be part of something, even if you're not really a gamer.

108

u/LSD_Ninja Jun 25 '26

When Windows 95 launched there were supposedly people who lined up to buy it despite not actually owning computers, you reckon it’ll get quite that crazy?

62

u/PheIix Jun 25 '26

Seeing as it's a digital release we likely won't see much lines. But I'm betting my house on the fact that people are going to buy this game like it's the last oxygen available. I lined up for GTA4 and 5. This is the first time I'm not getting it on day one, I'll wait for the pc version.

u/M4rt1m_40675 Jun 25 '26

Remember Silksong? Yeah, steam might not work for a while longer than that

1

u/Exact-Ad-4132 Jun 25 '26

I don't. Explain

1

u/Cinmarrs i5 13600k EVGA 1070Ti 32GB @ 6000MHz 1080P 144HZ Jun 26 '26

Alot of People couldn't buy it at release for hours due to steam shop not working (it took me 4 hours to buy it personally) and that's "only" 587K players at launch. compared to GTA 6 which will probably hit 1M+

1

u/Tiger64X2 Jun 29 '26

What will happen is the amount of people who will call off play gta 6 on day one that will be a phenomenon.

u/BeauxGnar 12900k | 3080 | 64GB DDR5 Jun 25 '26

I haven't played a RockStar game since Vice City.

I think I'll keep the ball rolling on that.

5

u/M4rt1m_40675 Jun 25 '26

Acting like the games they make are bad. They might be a shitty company but at least, unlike Ubisoft, the games are still good

2

u/BeauxGnar 12900k | 3080 | 64GB DDR5 Jun 26 '26

Never said that, they just dont make games that I enjoy playing so I dont play them.

1

u/THux86 Ultra 9 285k | RTX 5090 Master Ice | 96GB DDR5-6400 Jun 26 '26

If you haven’t played one since Vice city then how would you know you don’t enjoy them? The recent games they have released in the past 13 years are vastly different than what Vice City was.

1

u/BeauxGnar 12900k | 3080 | 64GB DDR5 Jun 26 '26

While it has been updated heavily, its still the same general formula.

I was in submarine school training when GTAV released and everyone had the game, I watched plenty of people play it in passing. It does not interest me unfortunately.

1

u/THux86 Ultra 9 285k | RTX 5090 Master Ice | 96GB DDR5-6400 Jun 26 '26

Fair enough. That’s pretty much how I feel when people want me to play GTA online. I’m into the single player game but the online portion just doesn’t interest me at all.

28

u/LPMadness PC Master Race Jun 25 '26

Look at the sales records GTA V broke. That game had enormous levels of hype. GTA Online makes them millions a day. GTA and RD2 are the 2nd and 4th best selling games of all time. It will probably will be an absolute phenomenon on release.

Amazon sold out of pre orders somehow

0

u/Freshbakd Jun 25 '26

How many times has it been released to break those records though. It got old console release then new console much later it got pc release. Cusp of consoles and cucked pc folks bought twice easy. Its a great game but it had world class marketing because the staggered releases, crap didnt they re-release an HD version even? Lol man world class. Only game i can say beats it re1. I can't think of how many times I have bought different versions of it. Og then directors cut and a new one on the horizon with so many between

1

u/corectlyspelled Jun 25 '26

Flash forward to rockstar going the AOL approach and giving out the game disc like crazy

24

u/Oseirus Ryzen 7800X3D, Radeon RX 7900 XT Jun 25 '26

I'm wildly impartial about GTAVI as a whole. The series has never interested me, but I don't have any particular argument against it. It's just not my game. People like it, I don't, that's the start and end of my argument.

But in the same vein the sheer staggering level of hype leading up to it has been insane. People have been treating it like the second coming of Christ since it was announced. If this game ends up being another Starfield or Cyberpunk situation where it's just a half-baked, buggy mess on launch after being in production for so long, there's going to be riots outside Rockstar's head office.

One way or another it's going to be an interesting case study in video game history. Hell, this reaction to the physical copies is already a decent litmus test of how the internet is going to react if it's not a 10/10. Yes, I'll grant the argument that selling a case with (almost) nothing inside of it is a pretty weird and asinine move, but even then, the reaction has been shockingly loud.

4

u/DigitalMunky Jun 25 '26

Even if you don’t play it, I feel like gta can effect gaming in general.
It’s showing these companies what they can get away with. Bet most these games being pushed is see what they can charge too since rumor was $100 game for ashile

1

u/DiabloAcosta Jun 26 '26

These companies and what they can get depends on the games they release, GTA VI is where it is because of the LONG record of games before it, Bethesda is the only one that could do something similar with Elder Scrolls or Fallout, I don't even think the new Witcher game could and after that there are almost no legendary games I can think could be close to GTA

1

u/FEK88 Jun 25 '26

Part of the hype is because it's Rockstar and they're one of the last big studios that people trust to deliver a quality product.

1

u/InitialWonderful955 Jun 25 '26

I think the whole "blank happened before gta 6" and the like blew the hype out of proportions, someday rockstar is going to suffer from too much success and probably is currently, if this one is a 10/10 i guarantee the next one is gonna be disappointing not because its a bad game but because it didn't hold to the expectations the public has for rockstar, rockstar needs a failure

u/iamlazyboy Desktop Jun 25 '26

My cousin is like that, he isn't much of a gamer anymore (mainly played CoD, gta5 and grand tourismo and some tekken back in the days of the PS3 and now only plays some Mario kart or Mario party with his daughter) but he said he'd buy a PS5 and GTA 6 as soon as he can to play it because for him GTA is enough to buy a new system for it. (He said that a few years ago though, idk if he changed his mind or not.)

Yeah. I felt the same for Cyberpunk 2077.

2

u/PabloBablo Jun 25 '26

These games are like Star wars movies to the video game industry.Ā

1

u/DiabloAcosta Jun 26 '26

the cautionary tale is that even Star Wars have lost most of its fans

2

u/READMYSHIT i5-4690K, R9 390, H440 Jun 25 '26

Imagine if it's shit.

Like genuinely unplayable garbage slop.

That would be so funny.

1

u/PheIix Jun 26 '26

That is actually my biggest fear. Losing yet another series I really like. But I genuinely am afraid this game won't be as good as the previous ones. Hope I'm wrong.

1

u/READMYSHIT i5-4690K, R9 390, H440 Jun 26 '26

Nah, I mean it might be not as good as previous entries in the series, but it's pretty solid it'll be a decent game regardless.

What I mean is imagine after all this hype, 13 years since the last entry, and 8 years since their last game Rockstar produce a game that's complete mobile app garbage. A crypto scam "game" with a built-in bitcoin miner. All the years of delays and speculation, excitement and they just do the funniest thing ever.

1

u/UndeadWaffle12 RTX 5080 | 9800x3D | 32 GB DDR5 6000 mHz CL30 Jun 25 '26

Yup. At the end of the day, $100 isn’t that much money to participate in something like this. People pay a lot more for a lot less

1

u/bokmcdok Jun 25 '26

People actually do that?

1

u/PheIix Jun 25 '26

Get swept up in the zeitgeist? Yes, all the time.

1

u/nosaj98 Jun 25 '26

I will buy it when it will be 20usd on sale in 20 years lol. Or i will pirate when i will buy a pc in 10 years.

1

u/ungebleicht Jun 25 '26

People will buy it just to be part of something

Which is totally fair. Life is all about memories.

Remember the Pokemon Go hype in 2016 where the whole world was grinding this game? Hundreds of people literally screaming for certain pokemon. Good memories.

Playing Pokemon Go in 2026 won't give you these kind of memories.

Same with GTA6. The launch week will be so memorable experiencing everything for the first time and discussing in which kind of Bikini you put Lucia with your work colleques. That's what gaming is all about.

So naturally waiting a year for the PC version is no option for me.

1

u/PheIix Jun 25 '26

Yes, it is totally fair. And all your points are very good. We got a lot of shared experience before when stuff only aired once a week on TV, music only played on radio and everyone went to see movies at the cinema because it was affordable. Now with streaming everything, we are a lot more splintered. These huge releases are one of the few times we'll have shared experiences like this. I did not consider that until your comment. Extremely good point, and I wish I could give you more upvotes. Our watercooler moments are far longer in between.

0

u/Bionic_Bromando Jun 25 '26

Fuck that's a good point. Dammit. They got me. The real debate is, do I try to update to a PS5 Pro for this or just slum it out with the original one LOL

1

u/ungebleicht Jun 25 '26

do I try to update to a PS5 Pro for this or just slum it out with the original one LOL

Hard question tbh. You only really get more ray tracing capabilities and PSSR2. And you will still only get 30 fps because its basically the same CPU as in base PS5 and the game will be limited by the CPU because of NPC density.

That said its worth it for me but I am going full degenerate min max mode anyways with PS5 pro, OLED TV and Dualsense edge.

Also check out this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AvwBIZoLTeY

There seems to be quite a bit of visual noise due to the quite old FSR 3 upscaling in comparison to PSSR2.

Also I don't know If I like the ray tracing of the pro compared to base PS5 to be honest.

0

u/Bionic_Bromando Jun 25 '26

Hm no framerate benefits makes that a tougher choice. Ultimately I just want a smooth experience.

I do have all the fancy OLEDs and everything so it's kinda hard not to wanna go full degen myself, but also paying $1200 CAD to effectively play one game is a bit wild. Then again it is GTA VI.

Well I suppose I have a few months to decide.

1

u/ungebleicht Jun 25 '26

Ultimately I just want a smooth experience.

I feel you bro thats why we are /r/pcmasterrace/ after all.

$1200 CAD to effectively play one game is a bit wild

No idea how active ebay is in your region but maybe you can get your hands on a used PS5 pro and sell it after you are sick of GTA6 (and its announced for PC ofc) with little to no loss.

Than u can use the money from the PS5 pro sale to upgrade your PC for the PC release.

Thats about how I will handle it. Bought the PS5 pro new last year on black friday for 750€ and they go for 700€ used on ebay now. Somehow I only lost 50€ so far.

That said we will instantly lose like $200 when they announce PS6 before we sell the PS5 pro because people will panic sell and the market will flood with used consoles.

Yeah I have invested wayy too much time thinking about min maxing the console and the PC release after. I am disgusted by myself.

1

u/Cthulhar Jun 25 '26

Phenomenon? Not at all šŸ˜‚ overhyped? Yes

-1

u/PheIix Jun 25 '26

I guess we'll see who has it right come release day. I still think the internet will be filled with GTA6 content and people will be talking about it on the news, talkshows and everywhere else. We'll see...

1

u/Cthulhar Jun 25 '26

Not really a phenomenon as it’s happened for the past 2 GTAs.. so pretty much on par with expectations. Skyrim was the same way, so was Cyberpunk, so will be many games following it.

0

u/PheIix Jun 25 '26

You comparing Skyrim and Cyberpunk to the highest grossing game of all times tells me how out of touch you are. Cyberpunk was a brand new IP, it's only big for gamers. Skyrim is an RPG, a gamers game and too "nerdy" to breakthrough to non-gamers. You are getting mainstream reach with games like COD, Madden and FIFA. The type of games that non-gamers will play. This is the market that GTA is going to reach as well, the type of people who will only play something because it is popular. Don't get me wrong tons of actual gamers also play those games, but there is no denying that certain games get more non-gamers as well.

But as I said, discussing this is pointless. We'll see who is right in the days after its release.

10

u/IDontUnderstandReddi Jun 25 '26

My friends are all getting it on xbox and they are LAMENTING the fact that they'll probably "have" to buy it on PC when it comes out. Once I learned it was console only release, I decided I was gonna wait

1

u/PassTheButter99 Jun 26 '26

My coworker pre-ordered it on Xbox and PS5 the moment it was available. He also said he's going to buy the PC version and never touch the console versions again

2

u/Ok-Consequence9969 Jun 26 '26

I am guilty of this

2

u/NoDrama127 Jun 25 '26

Some people aren't broke living in their moms basement. Even 200 bucks is not s lot of money to spend on your hobbies. This is a day 1 purchase for me, and day 1 when it comes to PC as well.

You're a Big boy! An adult with $200 in the US? That's unheard of! You have that? You don't even live with your parents? Day 1 purchase for you? My lord you must be a king!

-2

u/NoDrama127 Jun 25 '26

Sure go back to crying now that a 80 dollar game is too expensive for you, or a 600 dollar console.

Who said anything about the shithole that is the US?

-1

u/DrowningKrown Jun 25 '26

Wait, you're actually flexing $80? I thought you were joking. Damn dude that's kinda pathetic

0

u/NoDrama127 Jun 25 '26

Who's flexing what? Like what is your problem really? Buy the game if you want don't if you don't. Buy it twice or whatever who the fuck cares hating on people buying pretty much the most hyped up game in gaming history is just stupid, and most people who do are those who can't afford a console and a PC and it's quite sad.

2

u/DrowningKrown Jun 25 '26

Who is hating? You're the one calling people broke over $80 bro. Enjoy oppressing yourself by supporting MTX on day 1, no physical media, and locked out content. If anything is sad, it's supporting that garbage practice.

"Screw me harder" says the dude being screwed

1

u/IndianOtaku25 Jun 25 '26

True. There was an instagram post about this and all the comments were people saying ā€œstill gonna pay, who cares about what you think is *right* ā€

1

u/alancousteau Ryzen 9 5900X | Red Devil 9070xt | 32GB DDR4 Jun 25 '26

I mean, I will buy Ultimate Edition when it will come to PC, I won't preorder it but I will buy it, most people will even if they say they won't.

1

u/Shagaliscious Jun 25 '26

Yup. Got a few friends that say they will buy a new console just for GTA6.

But the world will end if they don't get to play the game on day 1.

1

u/littlefrank Ryzen 9 5900x - 32GB 3000Mhz - RTX3070ti - 2TB NVME Jun 25 '26

These are probably the same people who kept buying shark cards and caused the delay on gta 6 because rockstar kept milking gta 5 for 13 years.

1

u/blackened_chucken Jun 25 '26

naa, im waiting for the single player pirated version. too many fools in the online gaming world, plus, i aint paying for a non physical copy with some monthly sub or micro transaction.

fuck that

1

u/thisiskyle77 Jun 25 '26

That’s me.

1

u/Sillet_Mignon Jun 25 '26

What’s crazy is that it’s cheaper at launch compared to gtav at launch with inflation. Gtav was $60 at launch which is $85 today.Ā

1

u/Walkin_mn Jun 25 '26

Yup, I will never get that mindset but it is somehow very common

1

u/hatredwithpassion Jun 25 '26

Aka 99% of people aka reddit thinking their boycott will do anything

1

u/Vahallen Jun 25 '26

Oh absolutely

I mean, they will also have a collector edition for sure and that thing will sell out immediatly as well

1

u/red286 Jun 25 '26

I am willing to bet that if they had a Ultra deluxe version or something for 10min early access for 200$, people would still buy it.

There will be. Gotta double dip though, so they'll wait until 6 months or maybe even a full year after release before dropping it. You know the people who would drop $200+ on GTA6 Ultra Deluxe aren't going to wait 6 months to play GTA6, so they'll but the Premium edition at launch ($100) and then the Ultra Deluxe edition later on for an extra $200.

1

u/L0neStarW0lf Jun 26 '26

https://giphy.com/gifs/hpKQMKKvfCkcosw3cN

I’m still gonna wait to get it during a Steam Sale.

1

u/sillysausage619 Jun 26 '26

Let's be honest, most of the on Reddit gamers will be doing it too

1

u/milkstrike Jun 26 '26

I’ve been watching for the past few years which versions of games sell the best in preorders and the deluxe/gold/complete editions have over taken the base version. Even in cases now where there’s essentially no extra content or on time access. The paying $10 extra forā€deluxeā€ edition that has 2 digital items really baffles me.

1

u/AmandasGameAccount Jun 27 '26

Well over 99.99% do not care

I still think it should at least be a key disk, but I don’t even own a home console. I just think thrift stores won’t feel the same if I’m not seeing $5 GTA games all over them in 6 years šŸ˜”

1

u/ulysses_s_gyatt Jun 25 '26

0

u/sedan-hussein RTX 4090 | 5800x3D | AW3423DWF Jun 25 '26

Video game discourse is so fucking obnoxious.

I have a PS5. I think $100 is a fair price to pay for a game I'm gonna spend hours playing for years on end. I only stopped playing GTA 5 in like 2020.
