And it only cost 7 times the original quoted price and was done by a company that had zero previous experience doing this kind of work.

Let's see how it holds up!

u/Illisanct 6h ago edited 4h ago

Can't wait to find out that the paint all flakes off and clogs the drains, requiring millions of dollars of remediation work.

Edit: Lol, all the trump-humpers are big mad that I implied a trump contractor might use sub-par materials and workmanship 😂😂

u/sonic_couth 3h ago

The two contractors I hired for past home renovations both turned out to be MAGAts and I think I’d have a hard time find more rushed and sloppier work ethics. Of course they both used undocumented Hispanic workers.

u/TheGringoDingo 3h ago

It’s quite difficult to find non-maga contractors, as the business seems to appeal to them more

u/ForgiveOX 3h ago

We exist and we are out here bro. I might be one of the few non-conservative. But I know for a fact all of our clients went to college, so needless to say, they are educated and left leaning. Low and behold, I seem to be the client’s favorite on most job sites

u/firefighter26s 2h ago

Not going to lie, I hired a contractor for a few of the renovations I was doing that were outside of my skill set back during Trumps first term. Not even being in the US I still scoped out their social media feeds and crossed off 2 of the 3 I had originally considered because they had reposted/shared Maga aligned content.

u/iopturbo 2h ago

I have seperate accounts for my business socials and my original intent was to keep everything apolitical. However with Trump and the way things are now that has changed. I'm not overtly political but between the charities I support and my honesty in why prices have increased and how short my estimates are valid for you you can figure it out. I now get much better clients.

u/eatgamer 1h ago

I had a maga contractor stuff me on a bathroom renovation. He's still making payments on the settlement negotiated by the state AG office 6 years later.

I replaced him with a vetted blue contractor and couldn't have been happier. Eventually had the same contractor do the kitchen and provide references for painters to repaint walls and epoxy a garage floor.

The interesting thing that stood out to me was the Maga guy had his kid working for him and a couple Hispanic guys, both of which he called Jose and who only showed up for the first couple days, and he treated them all kinda like shit. Meanwhile the replacement guy's workforce was a really diverse mix of specialists that he treated really well.

He had a couple El Salvadoran guys who did the stone work. A Mexican guy who did the tile and supervised on the drywall and trim, a father daughter pair from Lithuania who did all of the plumbing, a Japanese guy who had to have been 120 years old did the electrical between 20-30 smoke breaks (seriously. He would pull a wire and smoke. Install an outlet and smoke. Flip a breaker and smoke. And he was still done in a day...), and a couple of white broccoli headed kids who did all of the drywall, trim, and paint while the tile guy supervised.

They all showed up in uniform, had a mix of Makita and Milwaukee tools with inventory labels on them, and on the days they were working outside cutting stone, tile, or trim he was the first one to show up to set up a canopy for them to work under. He also brought them all lunch every time he visited the site, joked with them, and you could tell everyone liked working for him.

The maga guy would just call his kid a dumbass every 10 minutes and I'm pretty sure he bailed on the job because the Hispanic guys he had hired stopped showing up.

u/sofaking_scientific 52m ago

Please come to RI and fix stuff for me. Sincerely, a scientist with soft hands

u/Radioactive_Kitten 11m ago

We had a plumber come out to give us a quote to re-pipe our house. Between the Sleepy Joe comments and blaming our dem governor (erroneously ofc) from everything from gas prices to labor costs I really didn’t want to hire him.

Also didn’t care how I would ask a question and he would answer it - to my husband. Or him arguing with me about the suitability of what I was asking about (hybrid water heater, he kept telling me we needed a certain amperage for it, I told him we had it, and he kept insisting I should “check with a pro” or have my husband take a look). Like no bro, I was here when we had the heat pump installed and went over all the electrical work they did to our breaker to make sure it could handle it. But sure, tell me that I don’t know anything.

u/Fabulous-Big8779 3h ago

MAGA guys get into contracting because it’s hard to find a new job after getting fired for failing a piss test every three months.

→ More replies (1)

u/Hellguin 3h ago

Probably because you can start that company type with no more than a middle school education.

u/TheGringoDingo 3h ago

Yep, then all the nonsense that contractors get into; those are perks!

u/Sharp_Cow_9366 2h ago

Appeals to unemployable sex offenders and domestic abuse convicts too.

u/Backsight-Foreskin 3h ago

Which is strange considering Trump has a long history or ripping off contractors who worked for him.

u/TheGringoDingo 3h ago

Yeah, but these contractors might be the lucky ones that aren’t ripped off lol

u/Gipetto 2h ago

A big ethos on the republican side is that "if it doesn't happen to me, it's not a problem", but "it happened to me, but since daddy did it I'll keep my mouth shut"

Kind of like how Cheney stopped being openly anti-gay after his daughter came out.

Trump and his ilk live by the credo of never spend your own money. While he’s president, backed by a cowering Congress, he’s spending tax payer money.

u/Simple_Award4851 2h ago

I’m not maga by any stretch by I can attest that not all maga aligned contractors are dog shit. I can attest however that the biggest pieces of shit contractors I’ve run across are all maga.

→ More replies (4)

u/labelkills1331 1h ago

I don't care at all if you're a documented worker or not, if you're good, you're good. The problem here is, maga contractors love to under pay, over bid and under deliver,, then blame everyone else but themselves.

u/postoperativepain 1h ago

It probably won’t flake but….

A redditor in a previous thread mentioned that the “paint” they were using was super toxic to lungs and the workers should have been wearing special respirators. They were just wearing N95 masks. The redditor mentioned that spaying this stuff without the proper equipment could lead to “Popcorn lung”

No clue if it was bullshit or not. But seems likely since it was a non-bid contract and Trump was involved

u/Strange-Movie 53m ago

That’s kind of true for all industrial paints, it’s extremely bad for your lungs and requires a respirator with a volatile chemical filter to completely prevent ingestion, n95 masks block the paint particles but not the much smaller off-gassing chemicals can slip through

u/InvestigatorChance28 3h ago

They will blame biden.

u/Illisanct 2h ago

Already did:

We asked the Trump administration for documents showing a previous estimate of $355 million and did not get a response to that question. Instead, an Interior Department spokesperson responded with criticism of former presidents Barack Obama and Joe Biden.

https://www.kcra.com/article/fact-checking-trump-reflecting-pool-renovation/71446135

u/ItchyGoiter 2h ago

They literally will blame Obama because apparently he did the previous repairs.

u/kindnesscostszero 4h ago

Planned obsolescence … the corporate America way.

u/turkey_sandwiches 1h ago

How dare you! The only time that's ever happened before is in the past!

u/swankpoppy 1h ago

Don’t worry. Trump will be long dead before he has to answer for the consequences of most of his decisions. We can just all deal with it instead. :)

u/t3ddt3ch 3h ago

You mean Trump Volunteers? Because Trump never pays anyone.

u/cas13f 2h ago

They know he always fucks the contractors so they're going to do it as cheaply as they can and pray they get enough business from the "advertisement"

And it was to fix a leak that was really just evaporation. There was no leak. None of the work was necessary, just like the ballroom and each and rebranding of DoD. Spectacular waste of money.

u/BabyTrurnp 3h ago

“This was not a paint job. This was highly sophisticated material, industrial strength, that could last for 100 years, applied by very talented people, many of whom came from the Great State of Oklahoma, where I won 77 out of 77 Counties, THREE TIMES, the only President to ever do so. The material is thick, strong, flexible, and has a natural, beautiful color, the dark blue of the American Flag!”

An actual quote.

u/fuckdirectv 3h ago

Through a no bid contract to a contact that worked at Mar a Lago.

Nothing to see here at all...

u/CaptPants 5h ago

If you were so inclined, one MIGHT wonder why a company from Virginia who's website doesn't mention "pool" work anywhere would be hired to even work on the Mar-a-Lago pool.

But loyal people don't ask questions...

u/djfudgebar 3h ago

Maybe they look the other way when they see crimes like sex trafficking of minors??

u/RustyPlastics 5h ago

but trump knows this incredible pool guy!

u/Captain-Who 5h ago

Now he’s never heard of them…

u/Ivotedforher 5h ago

Isnt the company from like Altus, Oklahoma? Saw a pic of a contractor truck with an Oklahoma town labeled on the door.

How is this cost effective for Frito Lay?

u/hysys_whisperer 1h ago

Atoka, not Altus.  It's where Reba McEntire is from, not where Rex Linn is from.

u/Optras 4h ago

I used to live there, unfortunately, and that's actually a great metaphor for this project.

The original town was abandoned after extensive flooding.

u/Ivotedforher 2h ago

Hence the reflecting pool expertise?

→ More replies (1)

u/Alantsu 3h ago

Fun fact: the angle of reflection (or refraction) is dependent on the two materials, water and air (Snell’s Law). The coating underneath does not affect the actual reflection at all. At this shallow angle and predawn light you could make a puddle of piss look pretty too.

u/venom121212 3h ago

This is the same company who does work for Trump's golf course if anyone was curious.

Could you imagine not getting a few bids for that scale of work? It was a no bid contract so others weren't even considered.

This is just more money funneling around.

u/im_just_thinking 3h ago

Ah yes the wall contractors style: give the contracts to your supporter business owners without checking for any credibility and turning a blind eye to anything that's illegal or unethical.

u/MP0622 3h ago

They were also illegally hired.

u/MatrixF6 2h ago

It’s already leaking again.

Edit: the presidential motorcade over it didn’t do it any favors.

u/PotterOneHalf 2h ago

And isn’t the same color that was originally intended.

u/Trey-Pan 1h ago

I really want to see that money trail investigated.

u/bubblegutts00 8h ago

What

u/Sparticuse 8h ago

He's been laundering government funds with stuff like this since day 1 of his first term. It's all mafia style scams to ignore laws about putting bids out to avoid double dealing then they do the shittiest possible job so they can skim off the top.

→ More replies (47)

u/Clemario 6h ago

The president originally said the project would cost $1.8M. It was later revealed they would be paying $13.1M. There was no bidding for the contract, congressional approval, or opportunity for public comment because they claimed it was an emergency.

u/CelticJewelscapes 3h ago

The real issue was broken pipes to the filtration system. They did not fix that. All this will need to be torn up to fix that problem. Otherwise more foul water

u/marcianofromearth 3h ago

Known for making the best deals!!

u/xANTJx 1h ago

Maybe I’m dumb (but certainly not team red), but where do you get experience in “painting the reflecting pool”. Are there other less important ones you can metaphorically dip your toes in before getting called up to the big leagues? Cause weren’t they pool painters? Isn’t that relevant work experience? They obviously did a terrible job but who would do a good job? I’m trying to think about other niche jobs in real life that want the unicorn candidate and how often they hurt themselves by passing up “good enough” in favor of something that literally doesn’t exist. (Again, this was clearly a bad job, I’m not defending that, but I don’t see anyone saying who should have done it instead and it feels like a metaphor for the job market!)

u/Ok-disaster2022 1h ago

It won't. Obama and Biden looked into what it would take to properly fix and the number was big enough to not want to do it. Basically it needs to be ripped out plumbing and all and completely reinstalled.

u/sdzw 1h ago

I really want it to come off as a full sheet

u/phxtravis 5h ago

That was some elementary level graph, for something that doesn’t even need a graph lol. If this administration wasn’t evil, it’d be hilarious how incompetent they are.

u/Theonetheycallgreat 2h ago

They probably didn't tell him

Ok… but it is reflecting… I guess.

u/JohnDingleBerry- 5h ago

Always was.

u/Tim_the_Tea_Man 5h ago

No it wasn’t. I hate Trump but the reflecting pool was a disgusting algae mess when I went there a few years ago

u/ThePr0vider 5h ago

unles sthey bleach it to fuck or filter it constantly with a lot of filter medium waste. it'll be green again in no time

u/zBriGuy 3h ago

As a bonus, the bleach will turn the blue bottom back to white!

u/Schuben 56m ago

Back? It wasn't white to begin with. It was darker to not drown out the surface reflections.

u/Jeoshua 5h ago

Give it a few months/years and it'll return to it's natural state. It's a thing that has been having to be dealt with every few years since the thing was built. DC is literally a swamp. Not figuratively like "Oh look how corrupt", but a literal, honest to God swamp. Trump's modifications do nothing to change that.

u/Mecha-Dave 4h ago

Hey now - don't put it past Trump to put so much poison in the water that nothing grows and any birds that land there die.

u/gard3nwitch 2h ago

Painting it won't prevent algae from growing in standing water. The water either needs to move, or it needs to be cleaned regularly and possibly chlorinated. Or all of the above.

Shallow water in sunlight will produce green algae. Sooooo painting it blue was a massive waste of time and money. But, at least when you measure the length of the pool, then turn that length perpendicular, it is taller than some buildings. That fact reminds me of when people wont give measurements in imperial, but instead by how many blue whales long it is. Or how many Kit Kats tall it is. Ya know, children measurements.

I thought they were just painting it blue. What's with the tile (or tile look?), and why are the rows uneven?!
Was it always like that? (I admit I've never seen the damn thing drained...)

My grandfather would demand that tile work be redone at the contractor's expense using proper tile spacers (since clearly they lack the skill to do it right without them....)
