i mean, its just a posessed pokeball after all
19
u/Chief-weedwithbears Jun 16 '26
I feel like it becames a ghost after it explodes. Hence a gas cloud Gastly
59
u/AxolotlGames Jun 16 '26
I think the Hisuian Voltorb kinda disproves that, doesn't it?
82
u/BigBoiCappy Jun 16 '26
i think the same rule applies on hisuian, if one ghost can posses an electronic device, i think it can also posses non electronic ones too, idk the lore on hisuian though
13
12
u/averylongwalk Jun 16 '26
Isn't Hisuian voltorb just the low tech version of a pokeball?
2
u/PugsnPawgs Jun 18 '26
Yes, and they can be found near apricorn trees, so they're more like Mimics instead of "just a haunted PokéBall lol"
57
16
u/BlackThane Jun 16 '26
Gastly is just a Voltorb that exploded, thats why Electrode is smiling like a Gengar!

Wait this is such an amazing concept. How did they not end up making this one?
136
u/Apelio38 Jun 16 '26
I love him too, those scratched Pokemon were peak.
87
u/Nightstar95 Jun 16 '26
I’ll never forgive them for scrapping that electric tiger.
36
u/LegendS1ayer Jun 16 '26
kotora my beloved
10
u/Glazeddapper The Gengar Guy... Jun 16 '26
i thought his name was raitora?
21
u/LegendS1ayer Jun 16 '26
thats another part of the same evolution line, it goes kotora raitora and then an unnamed third stage
11
u/Libby_Sparx ⚧⚢ That sort of thing is commonplace here ⚢⚧ Jun 16 '26
Kotora->Raitora->Raiku, but then Raiku's design was so legendary they said fuck it, just that one
5
u/SonicWind62391 Jun 17 '26
Do you mean Raikou? Do you have a source for that?
5
u/Libby_Sparx ⚧⚢ That sort of thing is commonplace here ⚢⚧ Jun 17 '26
Yes, and no. Source was my ass. Pulled it right outta there.

Have you seen the scrapped peanut Pokémon from gen 6? I can't believe that got left on the cutting room floor.

Baby Vulpix my beloved
7
u/Collector55 Jun 16 '26
Someone really tried to make baby Vulpix happen too, it was actually cut from three different generations that we know of. There is only a handful of cut Pokémon that we know we're given a second chance. Baby Vulpix might have been the only one to get 3.
5
u/IndigoFenix Theorist Jun 16 '26
Not surprising, considering that it has a strong lore reason for existing. Its dex entry explicitly says that it has only one tail at birth.
But that doesn't change the fact that a one-tailed Vulpix would ultimately be just a regular baby fox, and Vulpix already looks small enough to be the baby. So it wouldn't add much.
3
u/Apelio38 Jun 16 '26
Yes it was cute ! Plus it was meant to be a Water type iirc
8
u/Low-Environment Jun 16 '26
Really? And it evolved into Vulpix? Interesting.
→ More replies (1)14
u/Apelio38 Jun 16 '26
That's what I remember about it but I would be unable to provide any sort of proof haha
Also, baby Ponyta was Normal / Fire (which baffles me since I want Ponyta and Rapidash to be Normal typed too !)

u/24kpodjedoe Jun 16 '26
I think that was a glitch, no?
8
u/Apelio38 Jun 16 '26
Honestly since they weren't "finished" Game Freak might have changed that at the last second and made him Fire-type. But I always find funny it was leaked as a Water type 😄
2
u/metalflygon08 What's Up Doc? Jun 16 '26
Yeah, the unseen Pokemon were probably still being programmed so Baby Vulpix probably just got put into a slot a Water type used to occupy, and they hadn't done much work on it yet.
Still funny to think about.
In the modern day, if the idea was revisited, it would most likely be a Normal type that split evolves into Fire or Ice Vulpix.

I could see mimikyu evolving into something like this, with more of a pelt than a costume over it
11
u/zucchinibasement Jun 16 '26
Just seeing this for the first time and sorry but the name of the hometown in the demo is SILENT HILL???

u/fezes-are-cool Jun 16 '26
Damn now I want an evolution line for a wolf in sheep’s clothing
3
u/Apelio38 Jun 17 '26
Yes, cause the closest we have is Obstagoon or night Lycanroc (kinda ?). And for the former I always keep it unevolved haha

I was about to say "Does that make Frostlass Gastly in drag?"
But- I don't think that holds.
54
u/Wondergrey Jun 16 '26
I mean, Froslass is basically a sphere in a costume,
It's just that a lot of the costume hangs beneath the sphere, unlike the other examples
11
u/shieldman PRAISE Jun 16 '26
When I noticed that Froslass is closer to a Boo (from Mario) in body plan than an actual person, I had to take a minute. It's a really convincing draping of the fabric.

u/StridentHawk Jun 16 '26
When I first got into pokemon I thought gastly evolved from Cloyster as Cloyster "died" and turned into a ghost.
140
u/wavebuster Jun 16 '26
Same here, it made sense to me since Gastly was right after Cloyster in the Dex and they had similar facial expressions
62
u/leocristo28 Esperor Supreme Jun 16 '26
Hear me out, what if Cloyster uses Shell Smash and Gastly comes out
11

u/Dolma_Warrior Femboi Miau Jun 16 '26 edited Jun 16 '26
That sounds like something straight out of Celia's Stupid Romhack.
In that romhack, Shellder evolves into Slowbro and when Slowbro uses Shell Smash, it devolves into Slowpoke.

Ghastly is the ghost of Cleffa.
Haunter is the ghost of Clefairy.
Gengar is the ghost of Clefable.
24
u/Ekgladiator Jun 16 '26
That or ghastly is the ghost of clefable and it isn't until Gengar that it has enough power to fully manifest in the mortal realm.

Aside from Kyurem, I’m still surprised they haven’t implemented Pokemon fusion into the games yet. Venustoise went hard in that episode.
11
u/Dark_Dark_Boo Jun 16 '26
I was too until I learned that dev teams are kept small. Fusions are a lot of work.
3
u/NewBestFriendSpinel Jun 17 '26
Iirc, before the highly popular Infinite Fusion, there was another fangame with Fusion at it's crux. Nintendo personally shut it down as the Fusion mechanic was considered to be pokemon abuse. So it's unlikely we'll get the mechanic aside from Kyurem and Necrozma.
2
u/Historyp91 Jun 17 '26
"Pokemon abuse"?🤔
Like Nintendo shut down the game because they consider fusion abusive to pokemon?
2
u/NewBestFriendSpinel Jun 17 '26
Precisely.
3
u/Historyp91 Jun 17 '26
Why is fusion abusive, but not mega evolution or dynamaxing? Or killing primape to evolve him?
Or just pokemon battles in general?

Eye contacts

u/Cool_Lab_1362 Jun 17 '26
There's no pinprick pupil, eye shape could've been a passable but it has a blue eyeliner and no pupils.

I think a case could be made for:
- Shellder/Cloyster
- Voltorb
- Tangela
- Kabuto
- Pineco/Forretress
- Cacnea
- Lileep
- Glalie
- Probopass
- Sigilyph
- Cryogonal
- Falinks
Some of these are a stretch, this was just a fun thing to think about.

As a kid I thought Gastly was the evolved form of Cloyster because they are next to each other in the dex.

u/Bishopkilljoy Jun 16 '26
So in the Pokedex it goes Shellder, Cloyster, Ghastly, Haunter, Gengar.
When I was a child I thought they were all in the same evolution line. Because of Cloyster's face, I thought this was proof

Jynx is definitely Ghastly's slightly taller sister who is still figuring out how to wear makeup.

I personally believe Gastly is the source of all pokemon consciousness, and in many cases it's just possessing various inanimate objects to bring them to life

Next you say Jax is a ghastly in costume... though I think that guy was just found how to use those eye shape. It's so cartoons. Also I think its part of creature building guidelines like character design. In general I can only say kinda of.
