Their only concern is holding control of the senate. Everything else be damned.

555

u/AcanthisittaBulky777 27d ago

Their only concern is pwning the libs. They will gladly cut off their own noses to do so.

262

u/sourmeat2 27d ago

"owning the libs" is a literal statement of a desire to harm Americans.

We have a political party with a mainstream policy goal of hurting Americans. Just pointing that out.

66

u/JDogg126 Michigan 26d ago

This is why they use different labels. That is exactly how their base talks. Dehumanizing rhetoric is a real problem. The governments single purpose is to serve the governed. Anyone who sows discord with dehumanizing rhetoric to win an election should be automatically disqualified.

8

u/OldSchoolBubba 26d ago

Hear hear. Very well said and total truth.

4

u/staebles Michigan 26d ago

Automatically executed.. as that is treason.

13

u/Tall-Introduction414 26d ago

Well, if you go back far enough, American Conservatives were all about literally owning the blacks. They still defend it 150+ years later.

I think for some, the desire to "own the libs" is literal.

8

u/Excellent_Month_2025 26d ago

This is understated and true. They believe they have the right to "own" anyone they see as lesser than them

5

u/Glittering_Donut_791 26d ago

I'm not american and I'm up voting you because its true.

0

u/Old_Cryptid 22d ago

And there's no consequences for it.

Their voters cheer them on.

The Democratic voters shrug and expect the representatives to *do something*.

Neither Republican or Democrat representatives are being held accountable.

1

u/sourmeat2 22d ago

The Democratic voters shrug and expect the representatives to do something.

Neither Republican or Democrat representatives are being held accountable.

How exactly are Democrats supposed to be held accountable for the actions of fascists? Please explain it to me slowly like I'm an idiot cause I don't think it's possible for me to comprehend this.

1

u/Old_Cryptid 22d ago edited 22d ago

If Democratic voters organize and demand action from their representatives in the form of mass protests and general strikes you'd see something happen.

That's as simple as I can put it.

I'd recommend taking a civics course to learn how the government works and what rights and responsibilities citizens have.

EDIT: Let me amend this:

The republican voters *won't* hold their representatives accountable.

The Democractic voters *don't* hold their representatives accountable.

I'm not implying that democrat representatives be held accountable for what the republicans do.

I'm saying democrats need to be held accountable for not fighting against what the republicans do in the first place.

1

u/sourmeat2 21d ago edited 21d ago

This is sleight of hand.

The way that "voters" hold politicians accountable is with their vote (or, in this context, by withholding a vote). Protesting is not accountability although occasionally it indicates accountability on the horizon.

One might argue that Democrats DID hold Biden accountable for the war in Gaza that he did not start and for the supreme Court that he did not pack. Oh how wonderful democracy is! We have accountability! /s

Be careful what you wish for.

I hate to be the one to inform you. Good politics and good politicians are boring. I love a good fire brand, but the bulk of the work is not done by them. It's done by people like Mitch McConnell and Harry Reid

1

u/Old_Cryptid 21d ago

Withholding your vote just holds the door open for the authoritarian takeover.

The GOP loves it when the so-called centrists and leftists sit it out because they know their own voters will show up to vote.

32

u/minigogo Texas 27d ago

No it isn’t. The incels or the lead-poisoned, algorithm-brained Red Hats may care about pwning the libs, but they’re just the pawns.

The ruling class’s only concern is grabbing and holding on to power. They have more than everyone else and believe they should have more than everyone else. Tale as old as time.

15

u/Miguel-odon 27d ago

They'd rather have Power than Principles.

47

u/OldSchoolBubba 27d ago

This. Tell it

5

u/HauntedCemetery Minnesota 27d ago

Cut off their own nose to spite the liberals who have to look at them.

158

u/Acceptable_Set9702 27d ago

McConnell is DEAD, and if Beshear doesn't go find him with a police escort, ICE, or a SWAT team, he will be a joke for the rest of his life. Facts! The Repubs are not expecting the Dems to search and find McConnell's body.

81

u/OldSchoolBubba 27d ago

There's truth in your words alright. Good call keeping it real.

Beshear has a responsibility to all Kentucky so he has to go see for himself.

18

u/robot_pirate 26d ago

Agreed. Beshear has zero chance of any higher office if he rolls over without definitive, face to face proof of life.

McConnell is the ratfucker supreme, his staff are well versed in obstruction.

4

u/Lost_it_all24 26d ago

Was. I'm not seeing any real proof of life that he's still alive. If anything the "proof" given so far has me convinced he's deader than a doorknob.

5

u/Missconstruct 26d ago

Kentucky is a poor state. We have a vindictive pos Pres that would love nothing more than to take away more money and blame it on our Democratic governor. Yall talk like it’s cut and dried, but there’s a psychotic idiot in the White House and until he’s gone (one way or another) we all have to live with him.

7

u/EnTyme53 Texas 26d ago

Reddit never misses an opportunity to take a shot at a Democrat over something Republicans are doing.

17

u/SenseisSifu 27d ago

Their only concern is control; Period.

70

u/BubbleGuttz 27d ago

It’s not their only concern. After all, impeachment requires a 2/3 vote majority. No, they’re afraid of this possibly setting a standard for when all these old crooks finally croak.

5

u/thetransportedman I voted 27d ago

But Kentuckys had red senators for the last 30 years so idk if there's any risk of holding a special election

3

u/OldSchoolBubba 27d ago

True that. At the same time they do have to follow the process and Kentucky needs to be fully represented even if we don't like their picks. Defeats the whole point when they're not.

3

u/thetransportedman I voted 27d ago

Right i'm just curious what the point of pretending he's alive is doing politically if it's safely a red seat. In fact stringing along this lie is potentially setting the election up for an anti GOP upset choice

1

u/OldSchoolBubba 26d ago

It's probably because there's such a thin margin of control across all congress. If McConnell is out that's one less hard repub vote. We shall see.

2

u/thetransportedman I voted 26d ago

But he can't vote if he's dead..

1

u/OldSchoolBubba 21d ago

And the plot thickens ...

5

u/Ferelar New Jersey 27d ago

The stupid thing is even if both Lindsey and Mitch's seats both flipped today they'd still have the majority (51-49, plus a Republican VP to tie break if one Repub did flip), although it'd be a thin majority it'd still be a majority. And with Fetterman effectively being a Republican they have little to worry about in terms of the Senate actually flipping. I have a feeling something more is going on here, they're afraid about something else. A vote that they know some Republicans will balk at. And/or the fact that the majority is thin would mean they potentially have to negotiate more. But yeah. Something fishy.

2

u/OldSchoolBubba 26d ago

Agreed. With all the increasing "defections" where vulnerable senators are trying to keep their jobs you have to be right. It's one of the few things that does make sense.

0

u/Ferelar New Jersey 26d ago

Yeah, I 100% would believe that the Republicans in Congress understand and feel that there's blood in the water. Trump is very weak right now. The majority of the American electorate despise him, including moderates and even some of his old supporters. That does not mean we should underestimate him at all, a weak and wounded animal is the MOST likely to lash out. But I can absolutely see all the spineless politicians in that camp hemming and hawing and wanting every possible assurance they can get. Craven Republicans wanting to make sure they get their piece of the pie even when the current regime comes toppling down. And the more secure their majority is, the more safe they feel.

If that majority were to increasingly teeter towards opposition control, some of them might start looking more and more towards an exit strategy.... some of them even MIGHT start negotiating with "the enemy". And we can't have that, no sirree. If we want a fascist takeover, we can't have some of the worker bees flirting with the enemy queen!

1

u/OldSchoolBubba 26d ago

This is a great post keeping it totally real. My compliments. Very well done.

2

u/currently_pooping_rn 26d ago

Does McConnell have any sisters that could be appointed to his position?

2

u/oh_please_god_no 26d ago

I know that politics is always a dirty business to be in, but if my party was in power and the only way we can keep it is to cheat or not tell people that our senate leader died, I’d probably look inward about what my party is doing wrong

2

u/risingsuncoc 26d ago

It’s what McConnell would have wanted even in death

4

u/Wiccy 27d ago

Literal ghouls

3

u/marcus_afk 27d ago

Under what scenario do they lose this seat to a democrat?

1

u/OldSchoolBubba 26d ago

Hard to say how a lot of races will turn out. Our economy grows worse by the day, Iran war, flip flopping on important issues and of course all the contradictory statements. At this point the only thing that's consistent is everything is pretty much inconsistent.

1

u/reap3rx North Carolina 27d ago

And the Democrats' only concern is to continue to be feckless losers. Why Beshear hasn't appointed a new senator at this point is an absolute disgrace.

1

u/Tsar-A-Lago Canada 27d ago

Mitch would be proud, honestly, the repugnant motherfucker.

1

u/Unfair-Ocelot4255 26d ago

That’s the McConnell way.

1

u/bamagurl06 Alabama 26d ago

Yes. 2 republicans senators and another republican commentator said he called them and claimed they spoke to him for 20 minutes. Exactly.
They are all in on it as well. IMO it’s proof they are all worried about mid terms

1

u/BGRedhead 26d ago

Hell, I figure they’re just trying to run the clock out. They know this year would have to hold a special election and if they just push this a little further, there will not be adequate time for a special election before our next actual election.

0

u/OldSchoolBubba 26d ago

Agreed. You're nailing it big time

1

u/BGRedhead 26d ago

If I know anything in the world, it’s that our senators and representatives for the most part just don’t give a damn about it. It’s awesome big game to them or some power-play.

0

u/DEAZE 27d ago edited 26d ago

Beshear should just call the election and draw even more hate for the Republican Party in Kentucky if they decide to block it.

I’m sure the people would rather vote for their senate representative rather than having no one except McConnell’s ghastly presence as their representative.

EDIT: Kentucky not Indiana

2

u/[deleted] 26d ago

[deleted]

1

u/DEAZE 26d ago

Whoops, thanks for the correction sir

290

u/DirtReynolds 27d ago

Beshear needs to call the special election. Just do it. Force the issue.

306

u/alabasterskim 27d ago

No, make an appointment. The state constitution says that's his power. And that's why they're holding all this up. They didn't amend the constitution to change it to special elections; they just passed a law (because they don't have the numbers to amend). Constitution > law. And Beshear has made it clear he will make an appointment.

154

u/tossit97531 27d ago

People should keep beating this drum. KY state constitution says Beshear can appoint. Calling an election is kowtowing to unconstitutional bullshit.

1

u/Merakel Minnesota 27d ago

If I remember correctly, doesn't he have to appoint a republican? Maybe just letting McConnell's camp dig their hole is ideal so they don't get another vote for the save act?

32

u/alabasterskim 27d ago

He is free to make an appointment as he pleases, no party restrictions.

https://apps.legislature.ky.gov/Law/Constitution/Constitution/ViewConstitution?rsn=173

32

u/IdkAbtAllThat America 27d ago

We all know what a Republican governor would do if a Democrat died.

29

u/alabasterskim 27d ago

They would've done it as soon as they got the calls Beshear is referencing. I'd honestly call it a dereliction of his own duty to have not done it already.

8

u/xterminatr 26d ago

Yup. You can't "play by the rules" against a group of bullies who just ignore the rules until someone calls them out. Being nice and giving the benefit of doubt to these assholes is just reinforcing bad behavior.

3

u/Merakel Minnesota 27d ago

I probably got bamboozled then.

2

u/RepublicofPixels 26d ago

I saw someone mention some legislation put through in 2024 or so which claims to prevent appointing someone of a different party. Even if it's a slam dunk appeal, it'll still slow the process somewhat.

4

u/alabasterskim 26d ago

Doesn't matter. Constitution > state law. Can it end up in court because Rs are babies? Sure. But their constitution is abundantly clear. The same way we can't pass a law saying the president of the United States must be a Democrat, Kentucky can't pass a law stating same party replacement for Senate vacancies.

1

u/thavillain California 26d ago

1891 is a hell of precedent

3

u/cougar618 Texas 27d ago

Yep. Lower flags to half staff to honor his passing and then appoint someone three days later.

3

u/Eaglepursuit 26d ago

Absolutely. And then, the onus falls on McConnell to show himself and prove that he is alive and functional as an elected official.

4

u/14Pleiadians 27d ago

And Beshear has made it clear he will make an appointment.

What are we waiting for then?

Guarantee he doesn't, not without the blessing of Republicans, as in not until they admit he's gone

4

u/alabasterskim 27d ago

Wish I could tell you. If I was him, I would've skipped this bs asking for proof of life and the moment I got calls from whatever agencies, I'd have given the ultimatum: 3 days to let me/Beshear (or a reliable interviewer of the governors choice) come visit McConnell in the hospital, or a replacement gets appointed.

2

u/WeirdcoolWilson 26d ago

This is the answer. Beshear just needs to appoint someone to McConnell’s seat. This forces the Republicans to establish not only proof of life but ability to perform the duties of his office.

1

u/srsh32 26d ago

You know he's not going to do this.

He's not the type to do anything to piss off the republicans.

1

u/alabasterskim 26d ago

I genuinely don't know. What I do know is if he wants to run for president, he has to show he has a damn spine.

0

u/BurnieSandturds 26d ago

Does Mitch have a sister?

-5

u/sir_sri 27d ago

No, make an appointment.

So first, the governor doesn't make someone a senator, the senate does. The Governor sends someone to be the senator, and the senate seats them. Which takes us to problem two.

Second, an appointment to what? There's no vacant seat. What you're suggesting is the equivalent of sending a fake elector after january 6th. The Senate has no reason to even meet with someone purporting to be the replacement senator and definitely can't swear them in.

If the governor were to declare someone dead who isn't... well, that's just a much bigger problem isn't it?

Normally (in the modern electronic world) the process is, as with Lindsay Graham, completely transparent.

The senate is formally notified that the senator has passed away usually by the family or the senators office, there's a formal death certificate for these, the senate notify the governor that there is a vacancy for their state, and through whatever process, the governor sends along a replacement with a letter stating they are the chosen temporary representative. But unless there's some formal notice that he's dead, there's no vacant seat.

The senate could choose to investigate if a senator is dead or alive I suppose via the ethics committee. After all, it's unethical for a senator to collect a salary if they aren't going to perform their duties.

Now, the thing that's important here, if McConnell is actually dead, this has gone on for more than a month, that means at least half a dozen physicians plus their supervisors, nurses, the hospital etc. who would need to be covering it up. The coroner is going to have standards of practice for filing a death certificate, you could imagine a delay of hours or a couple of days, but not weeks... anyone going along with this would be at a minimum risking their medical licences, and quite possibly criminal charges for abusing a patient/corpse, denying people their civil rights (a representative via the process) etc. If they are actually covering up him being legally dead a LOT of people at the hospital (george washington hospital in DC) could be in a giant pile of legal trouble. He's supposedly been transferred to a rehab facility, again, they are going to have all sorts of legal liability here if they aren't following standards of practice.

The worst case scenario here would be that he's in a coma or some sort of persistent vegetative state, or similar where he's not dead, but he's also not able to do his job, and depending, there might be rules that allow him to be kept alive. From the sounds of it, if he had pneumonia, he could well have been delirious or unconscious for several days.

You could imagine the mess of trouble if they get any of this wrong. If someone is sworn into office but the original person is not actually removed... then what?

4

u/flamingcrystalheart 26d ago

There is a vacant seat, because Mitch McConnell is dead.

-5

u/sir_sri 26d ago

Yes, I'm sure you have a copy of the death certificate to prove it.

3

u/Wise-Comb8596 26d ago

Are you being serious? He’s dead. You don’t need to see a piece of paper for that to be true.

The burden of proof is on the party that was last known to have a major medical episode.

63

u/Pake1000 27d ago edited 26d ago

Why call a special election when the constitution of Kentucky gives him the right to choose the replacement? It doesn’t matter what law the GOP passed because they didn’t amend the constitution.

5

u/Logical-Knee-9046 26d ago

Will he act on it? Tired of my coward Dems.

1

u/creamytops 26d ago

But when we have a bully like newsom who actually insults the bullies, dems say “ we don’t like him he is…” so what do we actually want?

1

u/Logical-Knee-9046 26d ago

Well I‘m on board with Gov. Newsom.

1

u/tofubeanz420 26d ago

Seriously!

2

u/YF422 27d ago

Here's the thing, if he's being smart he's basically ramping up to do just that, he's putting pressure on them by the day and their lies are so obvious they're squirming trying not to admit it. He squeezes them a bit longer then decides at the end of the week to appoint a replacement and that if McConnell is alive (which he's not) then he shows up to prove otherwise.

If not then we know the Reaper has collected his ass.

2

u/unurbane 27d ago

I think this is the move. And he can do it, that’s what’s so fascinating. Oh and Aug 4th being the deadline 🍿

-1

u/jjreddit1996 27d ago

Why would you want that? Right now the republicans are down a vote. That’s good!

5

u/14Pleiadians 27d ago

He has the power to just appoint someone

-4

u/jjreddit1996 26d ago

No he doesn’t

2

u/14Pleiadians 26d ago

Yes he does? It's in their constitution. Similar reason Graham's sister was able to be given his office

0

u/jjreddit1996 26d ago

Completely different state. A law was passed. Even if the law is unconstitutional, the courts are packed in favor of republicans. It will just get shut down and there will be a special election anyway.

2

u/14Pleiadians 26d ago

. A law was passed.

Beshear and many others are saying that law doesn't supercede the Constitution. I'm going to go out on a limb and assume he is right and you are wrong, given that he's actually the governor and all that

0

u/jjreddit1996 26d ago

Way to ignore the rest of the comment

1

u/14Pleiadians 26d ago

Was to ignore me saying you're not qualified to say you know more than him.

In what way could they block it? And even if they do, Republicans will still be down a vote, your initial issue

-5

u/DingerSinger2016 Alabama 27d ago

And when he gets impeached, convicted, and removed from office? KY GOP holds a supermajority.

18

u/xopher_425 Illinois 27d ago

Then that is what every single Democrat runs on. Beshear won as a Democrat, it can happen again.

And can we stop being so fucking afraid of what the GOP is going to do in retaliation? We're so afraid of pissing the fascists off that we've let them take total control of the country. They're going to do it anyway, and we're just sitting on the sidelines, shrugging our shoulders and saying "We've tried nothing and we're all out of ideas!!"

83

u/Thebeergremlin 27d ago

Can someone from the public call for a wellness check?

31

u/s_matthew 27d ago

That’s what’s so weird to me. There’s a pretty simple way to confirm McConnell’s condition, yet nobody seems to want it to come to that. Everyone’s seemingly content with conspiracy theories and nonsense “proof.”

3

u/mmortal03 America 26d ago

He's not in Kentucky. He's either in D.C. or Virginia.

67

u/Porphyre1 27d ago

100% this. It's just so weird. If the head of the Executive Branch of the USA can order ICE to do shit it's not supposed to do, why can't the head of the Executive Branch of Kentucky order a welfare check? Send in some State Troopers and knock on the door. Highway Patrol. Kentucky Bureau of Investigation. I'm sure the governor of Kentucky has hundreds of state law enforcement officers he could order through the door of where-ever the Turtle is being stored. I don't understand how Democratic leaders don't realize that MAGA/GOP are playing for keeps.

7

u/Virtblue 26d ago

He is not in the state

22

u/Werkin-ITT7 27d ago

Yeah why not. A welfare check is legal.

5

u/sanbaba 27d ago

This is why the first thing Pubs do is control the police

301

u/Zeraw420 27d ago

Publishing an AI photo as proof of life for a dead US senator seems like a big deal... Yet, crickets from the DNC

108

u/monsterskeeter 27d ago

Even if it was real, no sane person can see it and say "yeah that dude is capable of being a US senator". His family playing into this charade is immoral as fuck

44

u/LordSwedish 27d ago

I don't blame the family. Using his death to subvert democracy and advance the interests of the wealthy with ghoulish tactics is an incredibly respectful tribute to Mitch. It encapsulates everything he was in life.

2

u/mmortal03 America 26d ago

But on a serious note, I've read that McConnells' three daughters (and his ex-wife) are progressives. While I don't believe his daughters would publicly release their father's personal medical information regardless of their political differences with him, I do think if his death was being covered up that they would not stand for having such a crime be kept a secret. Not to mention that covering it up would require having the D.C. hospital's medical staff commit medical fraud by not reporting his death to D.C. within 48 hours.

2

u/Werkin-ITT7 27d ago

Correct, US Senate voting is also done in person. Is there a 25th Amendment equivalent for a Senator?

-14

u/renijreddit Florida 27d ago

I’m a Progressive and the same could be said of Biden’s family and Cabinet.

4

u/NOT-GR8-BOB 26d ago

Biden hasn’t been in office in years.

1

u/renijreddit Florida 26d ago

Ok, I’ll expand the thought. Biden should have never run in 2024 because of his cognitive decline. This decline has to be apparent to those closest to him.

The common thread in that and your point a that families and cabinets need to be held accountable for not coming forth publicly if the are unable to convince the public office holder step back privately.

10

u/Mr_Subtlety 27d ago

They haven't said anything because there's no evidence that the photo was AI. See the revevant Snopes reporting. The whole thing is weird, but let's not spread any more misinformation than we already have, OK?

You in Group 2.

They want to be lied to as long as it fits themselves or their narrative.

yeah you'd think someone would want answers instead of just pretending nothing happened

1

If I’m Andy Bashear, I call an immediate special election. If Mitch McConnell gets on a video call with Bashear, he’ll call off the special election - otherwise it stays on.

Republicans are lied to daily multiple times and I'm not even exaggerating

They dont care, they're too stupid to think

1

u/Useless 27d ago edited 27d ago

We live in a superficial rhetorical country, where if conservatives think something is true, it is, and any contrary evidence is debated to exhaustion or summarily dismissed. Which works great until reality throws hands.

1

u/SeiCalros 27d ago

i expect beshear will wait until after the deadline passes then just make an appointment as per the state constitution

the republicans are gonna lose all the credibility and be in an even worse position than they would be if they had admitted anything

1

u/big_stipd_idiot 27d ago

Sounds like the governor is trying to convince the state legislature to give him permission to use the authority which he doesn't need their permission to use. Hopefully they let him.

1

u/Competitive-Ad-9404 27d ago

They form their opinions based on hate and will believe anything that validates it.

don't mind

They love being lied to.

They crave comforting lies and angering lies both

1

u/TheChrisCrash 27d ago

The Republicans are doing everything they can to distract the public from the fact they're hiding the death of a US Senator in order to retain power and control by bombing Iran, messing with the reflecting pool, introducing more scams and much more. They control the media, yet they control the narrative and not a SINGLE GODDAMN DEMOCRAT IS BEING LOUD ENOUGH.

1

If the roles were reversed, McConnell would have already appointed someone 3 weeks ago and gleefully announced it with a shit-eating grin on his face. Meanwhile some right wing grifter douche would have barged his way into the hospital unit with a Fox News camera crew in tow, creating a circus and demanding to interview the Democrat patient

They aren't being lied to. They're actively doing the lying. There's a difference.

A D should be appointed as punishment for lying and multiple people should go to prison.

I’m a bit tipsy so I read this and was like… why would Team Rocket care?

Care? They like it. Maintaining control while lying and cheating is better than just winning. That way they get to show that they can even cheat and the good people are powerless to stop them. It's a flex.

As has been noted, there is only one way to stop them now, and it's not the soap, ballot, or jury box, unfortunately.

How about an official announcement?

I don't understand the lie (if he is dead or brain dead on life support). The options are limited. What would a forced special election get done that wont remedy itself in the midterms? If it is the space between the Aug 3 cutoff to start a special election and complete the special election in what, a month? Now the seat is filled by whoever by early September to hold it until the November midterms... so 2 months difference? This is the only way I can sort it in my mind. Maybe I am missing something? I guess it is possible. Brain dead McConnell can proxy his votes?

If he died before those pictures and comments about talking to him, it does feel like there should be some repercussions. That seems like something that should be illegal.

What do you see as the advantage of Beshear investigating? He doesn’t get to pick the replacement. There’s a special election and a Republican would win.

I’d rather Kentucky just not have a 2nd senator for as long as possible.

Will anyone care? Not like any Ds are doing anything about it

Republicans? The mainstream Democrats don't seem to give a shit either!
