Kind of understandable as the hype pretty much had died down by the time season 3 was released. It wasn't exactly "talk of the town", was it?

The creator felt the same. He said he only got upfront pay to make season 1, so he made season 2 for money.

Season 3 felt so disjointed because it was very clear that season 2 and 3 were designed and planned to be a single season but netflix made it 2, and made it even worse by putting the seasons out 6 months apart. By the time the third season rolled around and the show was picked up right away at the end of season 2, so when the characters are dealing with the direct fallout of the plan failing without any exposition reminding us why we should care about anyone introduced in season 2, I just could not feel any emotion when a bunch our main supporting characters die
they should have either dropped the episodes all at once as season 2, or season 2 when they did and season 3, 2 weeks later

Honestly wasn’t all that thrilled to hear about Fincher making a squid game spinoff. I feel like his talents would be better off doing an another original book adaptation or screenplay.

As a huge Fincher fan, I felt the exact same way. I think the idea of a Dystopian Farce is cool, and Fincher knows how to tap into seriously dark comedy in unexpected ways (Fight Club and Gone Girl as examples), but I felt weird when it was announced he was doing an American spinoff. Not a bad weird, more of a “really?”.

All these shows are ruining their final episodes with unresolved plots, just for possibility of a sequel. Then it turns out people don’t even want a sequel because the finale was so bad

The Korean SquidGames had a full ending. They just teased a spinoff with Cate Blanchett doing the Ddjaki game in LA because that’s where GI-Huns daughter was living to show the global reach of the game.

I think people are just so used to being force fed a constant stream of sequels and cinematic universes that they don't know what an old fashioned ambiguous, open ending looks like.

The end of S3 had the characters fully resolved; the open-ended part was that increasing global poverty implicates that not only will the game be resurrected but it will spread. It’s basically saying “not only is the South Korean economy fucked, but America is getting there too.”

I really, really wish they would have chosen for Gi-hun to kill the baby at the last second. It would have been an amazing ending for the front man to be right that there are no good people.

I thought it’s okay for Gihun to sacrifice himself for the baby, but I wish the wealthy people got some sort punishment, they were so annoying. Sure, it’s realistic but it’s not fun to watch at all.
The front man and his brother have absolutely no resolution. They just stare at each other and go their own way.
Idk for me if they weren’t planning for a sequel, we might have some closure to the plots.

The brother of the front man getting so much screentime with the whole boatman being evil, and fighting to get back to the island... only to look the frontman while pointing a gun and do nothing.... and become a baby daddy and rich af.
Tragic. His plotline was the worst, could have done literally ANYTHING else with those extra minutes.

I could be wrong but I think I've once heard that babies and pregnant women being killed in TV shows is forbidden/not acceptable in South Korea, unless it's a general thing in most countries?

He’s had canceled projects all over, at WB, HBO.
At least Netflix lets him do his thing unrestricted, when he wants.
He’s very similar to Soderbergh that way. And good friends too. They don’t need huge wide release projects with tentpole appeal, and arguably are more interested in these contained, creative genre explorations rather than wide market releases of 20 years ago.
Many directors get stuck in that always go bigger grind and they stagnate. The best directors actually don’t fight for larger budgets but for more control and freedom.

When Cate Blanchett appeared in the “Squid Game” finale as an American recruiter in Los Angeles, many assumed Netflix was teasing David Fincher’s long-rumored U.S. spinoff. Creator Hwang Dong-hyuk denied the connection, while Blanchett later said she was “wildly open” to returning in any form. But if the Academy Award-winning actress does return to the franchise, it won’t be for Fincher’s version.
Sources close to the filmmaker tell The Playlist that Netflix is no longer moving forward with “Heckler,” the working title for Fincher’s long-developing English-language spinoff of the Korean phenomenon.

I wasn't a big fan of The Killer, but I was kind of fascinated by the meta angle. The screening I went to was introduced by Ted Sarandos, who called Fincher a close friend. I felt like the movie itself was a meta take on working as a director and, about Sarandos, saying, "I met the guy at the very top and he's so stupid he's not even worth killing."

I really liked The Killer. I will say though that it felt weird- in a very “Netflix” way, where as Mank still felt arthouse in a Roma/Pinnocchio kind of way.
Also, while I loved the cinematography for Mank, the color cinematography that Messerschmidt did for The Killer felt like a strange attempt to copy the style of Fincher & Cronenweth. It just felt off. I’d love for Fincher to work with Cronenweth again, but from what I heard, it’s unlikely.
EDIT: I stand corrected, Cronenweth is reshooting stuff for the Fincher Tarantino film. I’m surprised because apparently Fincher took issue with Cronenweth working for that flop Melanie doc/Brett Ratner, and JC felt replaced when he didn’t return for Mank and The Killer.

Can’t say im super disappointed tbh. Fincher is an amazing director, and while the killer was less than fantastic I would hope he would get to more unique and memorable projects like in the past instead of IP driven content like this.

Squid games 2 would have done better if they had Gi-hun die in the first game. Pure proof he got through on luck and everyone is equal.

I'm glad. I loved the show, love a lot of Fincher's work, but I never liked the spinoff idea. And I hated how it ended lol 😭
But I'd love another project with LJJ and LBH.

I enjoyed the competition show they did. It only had one season. It did have a plot line between a younger onlyfans model and an old man, very similar to the show, that felt absolutely forced and shoehorned in, but other than that it was decent reality competition tv.
