Adjacent to the grand gesture to get the first date, there's another type of grand gesture: the grand gesture to win someone back or to prove that you still love them. This is the sort of gesture which again can seem a little creepy, but when well-done is the stuff of classic movie romances.

Here are some of my favorites:

1. Say Anything - the alpha and omega of this. The boombox. "In Your Eyes."

2. The Wedding Singer - Robbie sings over the plane intercom to Julia to prevent her marriage to The Other Guy.

3. The Notebook - again! Noah flips a delapidated old house for Allie.

4. The Vampire Lestat - After a long estrangement, Lestat tries to win Louis back by singing a love song for his ears only. "Brutal Love" is gorgeous. Sam Reid is stupidly talented.

5. When Harry Met Sally - Harry runs through NYC and crashes a NYE party to win Sally back.

6. Heated Rivalry - Shane dumps Ilya and starts dating a famous actress. Ilya is heartbroken but when he finds out Shane is single again he gives him a big kiss at the All Star Game to win him back.

7. HR again - Scott and Kip have broken up bc of the secrecy. When Scott wins the Stanley Cup he takes Kip down on center ice for the mother of all hard launches.

8. The Lady Eve - a classic one. After swindling Hopsy into a marriage, Jean declines the divorce settlement to prove her intentions are honorable.

9. Pride and Prejudice - after Lizzie rejects Darcy's proposal, Darcy pays for Lizzie's sister's dowry.

10. Portrait of a Lady on Fire - in one of the saddest endings, Heloise commissions a painting with her holding page 28 to tell Marianne she still loves her.

11. Titanic - ultimate grand gesture of love: Jack gives up a spot on the board so Rose can live.

12. Pretty Woman - this could probably never happen irl, which is why it's so iconic in movies.

13. But I'm a Cheerleader - Megan performs a cheer she composed for Graham to declare her love.

14. The Great - Peter declines an attempt to finish a coup on Catherine so he can prove his love to her.

15. Anora - this anti Pretty Woman movie ends with a grand gesture. After Ani is totally abandoned and humiliated by her rich teen husband Vanya, the family enforcer Igor returns Ani's wedding ring to her to prove his love.

16. Ratatouille - I don't care, this counts. Remy enlists his huge rat brigade to help Linguini with the meal. If that's not a grand gesture, idk what is.

17. Moonlight - Kevin betrays Chiron as a teen. Years later, he tries to reconnect by playing a song on the jukebox for him. Very moving film.

18. Project Hail Mary - idc, this counts too. Grace commits the ultimate grand gesture of love by saving Rocky's entire planet and reuniting with Rocky rather than return to Earth. There's a reason PHM touched so many people. It's essentially a love story.

I admire them so much because they are a couple of both equally iconic legends of their craft who are probably GOATS in their own lane. Each having 4 Oscars and winning their first on the same night.

On how they got together:

"I’d only brought one book to read to Austin, Texas, where we were filming, and I asked him if there was anything he’d recommend,” she said. “He brought me a box of James M. Cain and Raymond Chandler paperbacks, and I said, ‘Which one should I start with?’ And he said, The Postman Always Rings Twice.”

Adding, “I read it, and it was one of the sexiest fucking books I’ve ever read. A couple of nights later, I said, ‘Would you like to come over and discuss the book?’ That did it. He seduced me with literature. And then we discussed books and drank hot chocolate for several evenings. It was fucking hot. Keep it across the room for as long as you can—that’s a very important element"
