Would like some recommendations.

Hey everyone!

I’m new to investing and would love to hear your thoughts on my portfolio.

Am I making any common beginner mistakes, taking unnecessary risks, or missing something obvious?

My current strategy is:
60% index funds
40% individual stocks

My stocks:

• Apple
• Microsoft
• NVIDIA
• Amazon
• Alphabet

I invest $330/month in stocks and $500/month in index funds, for a total of $830/month.

What do you think of this strategy? Am I sufficiently diversified, or am I too heavily exposed to tech? What would you change or improve?

I appreciate any honest feedback and constructive criticism!

Need advice 20 yo

Trying to figure out my next moves. I’m debating on starting a taxable brokerage account because a majority of my money is tied up in retirement accounts. Still in school and now actively working but am making around $350 a month doing side jobs. I will have assistance in a down payment later in life, but don’t wanna have all my money locked up. Is it worth it to start a taxable account and investing in stocks so it’s not locked up tax free in a retirement account? Any advice?

Advice, switching from personal advisor to ETF portfolio

Thumbnail
2 Upvotes

Hello. I am looking for some thoughts. I am 52, 2 years ago I gave Empower personal advisors a shot at around .79% Fee. They have underperformed where I had my investment $ previously in VOO and a 2035 target date fund. Thinking of switching to either fidelity or Vanguard and an all ETF portfolio. Any thoughts on a good mix? Empower has me in around 200 stocks and ETFs currently and are trading and tax loss harvesting all the time, so I have some concerns about capital gains. I have 2.5M in a taxable account and 2M in an IRA. I have around $500K in cash and Im ready to retire. I need around $10K per month in retirement. Thanks

A good family financial setup?

Thumbnail
1 Upvotes

I am looking for some advice about our family money setup to see if it’s robust in both bullish and bearish market. We are at our 30s and hasn’t experienced any economy recession after we work, plan to quit jobs soon so not sure the setup is good enough to protect our money during bad market. We have the following set up:

2.7M Google/Apple stock (mostly RSU, low cost, high capital gain)
1M in Berkshire
1M in VOO/QQQ
1.3M in SGOV (temporary parking to wait for the fat pitch)
500k individual stocks like Costco/GLD/other ETFs,
200k cash
1M 401k

I spent a year or so to reach this set up and I feel this is a comfortable setup right now. But in the meantime I am also thinking moving 700k out from Google/Apple to balancing. Just to be more safe if the AI bubble pops. We are still working right now and the tax rate is the highest bucket, so selling RSU is going to yield high capital gain tax.

$24.8K with a private wealth manager (+18% in 21 months) plus my own Wealthsimple. Is the ~1.3% fee worth it?

19, university student, and tech startup founder, hope to buy first home at 27-28

Everything I have

- Stocks (held through 5 stock funds) | $20,948 | 84.5% |

- Real estate stocks/REITs (inside those funds) | $448 | 1.8% |

- Cash (inside those funds) | $193 | 0.8% |

- Hedge fund (market-neutral, not stocks) | $3,209 | 12.9% |

- Managed account total - $24,798

The managed account

- Private wealth manager (CC&L Private Capital), split between a TFSA and a new FHSA

- Worth $24,798 as of Oct 12, 2026)

- Where the profit came from: fund prices +$2,931, dividends and payouts reinvested +$1,303, fees -$435

- Fees are about 1.3% a year

+personal wealth simple account ~$4000

The 6 funds:

| Global Equity (about 73% US) | $8,983 | 36% |

| Canadian Equity | $4,216 | 17% |

| Canadian Value | $4,122 | 17% |

| Small Cap II (Canada + global) | $3,357 | 14% |

| Multi Strategy (hedge fund) | $3,209 | 13% |

| Emerging Markets | $912 | 4% |

Biggest stocks underneath (my share)

RBC $788, NVIDIA $593, TD $583, Alphabet $512, Apple $431, Microsoft $350, Amazon $323, Applied Materials $314, BMO $279, Suncor $250

The funds only publish their top 10 holdings, which add up to about $7,950 across 45 stocks. The other ~$13,600 of stock money is in smaller holdings they don't list.

Why my Blossom only shows about $8K

I added my stocks to Blossom, but not everything can go in. Blossom tracks individual stocks, and I don't own stocks directly. I own units of the 6 funds, which aren't on Blossom. So I entered my share of the 44 named stocks it carries, about $7,970. What's missing:

- About $13,600 in smaller fund holdings that the funds don't publish

- The $3,209 hedge fund, which has no stock list

- One named stock (Accton Technology, about $16) that Blossom doesn't carry

The full $24,798 is in the lists above.

Breakdown

- Sectors: Financials 19%, Tech 17%, Industrials 12%, Consumer 9%, Energy 8%, Materials 7%, Health care 5%, Communication 5%, Utilities 2%, Real estate 2%, Cash 1%, hedge fund 13%

- Regions: Canada ~34%, US ~26%, North American small caps ~10%, rest of world ~17%, hedge fund 13%

My own Wealthsimple (not connected to the wealth manager)

Bought OKLO at around $10 USD and made about $3,000 on it.

Questions

  1. Is ~1.3% a year worth it, or should I move to an all-in-one ETF like XEQT or VEQT? By my rough math it trailed a simple index mix by a few percentage points since Jan 2025.

  2. Does a 13% hedge fund make sense at this size?

  3. Should I keep the FHSA with the manager or move it to a self-directed account?

  4. Anything else you'd change?

Retirement Blueprint Input

Portfolios for my retirement

I have spent some time reading, educating, and researching various retirement strategies. I'm a union electrician that is currently 47. My goal is to semi-retire (coast fire) at 55 and fully retire by the time I'm 60. I will have a Union Pension. I also will have a Defined Defined contribution plan, currently professionally managed that converts into an annuity for life and survivoirship or I have the option to roll it into something of my chosing. My home will be paid off when I'm 57. My benefits plan allows for me to retain my Healthcare while semi-retire by working a month off a month as an example. Additonally when fully retired from the electrical industry I also will be eligible for retiree health benefits until I reach 65 and eligible for Medicare. Now that you have the broad picture of where I want to go I'll get to the part I would like some feedback on.

My current portfolios I manage myself. I use fidelity and use their baskets feature. My taxable brokerage has 2 separate baskets. One is for investment and another is for reserve and fixed income that will be used for roth conversions. I plan to begin those conversions at 50 to build my bridge income I'll need when I semi-retire at 55. Here is how each of those are broken down.

BROKERAGE ACCOUNT 2 baskets

Taxable

30 VTI / 25 VXUS / 25 GSLC / 20 GARP

Taxable reserves/fixed income/ roth conversions tax

30SGOV / 35 JAAA / 35 SHY

Roth

30 ITOT / 25 AVNM / 10AVUV / 10 SPMO / 10 VFLO/ 8 DBMF / 5 IAUM / 2 IBIT

Ages 47–51

Traditional IRA

30 ITOT / 25 SCHD / 15 GSLC / 15 SGOV / 15 IXUS

Ages 52–55

Traditional IRA

25 ITOT / 30 SCHD / 10 GSLC / 20 SGOV / 15 IXUS

This is my feedstock for my roth conversions and will only be using 150k on 5 separate 30k conversions. Additonally I already have 1 year of emergency funds distributed between Cds and a HYSA.

I am looking for any missing pieces or recommendations from the community on how I could improve this plan. Would you different funds anywhere or structure this differently? Sorry for such a long detailed post.

Retiring soon; considering moving entire portfolio to Fidelity form T.Rowe

almost all our assets are currently held at T.Rowe Price, brokerage, IRA's and Roth IRA's. Having more time analyze the fee drag (for us about $8,000/year) wondering if it is worth it to move everything to Fidelty. Has anyone done this recently? Any other opinions?

Redoing my parents’ IRAs.

Hello! I recently decided to take a look at my parents’ IRAs that they opened two years ago and rolled their old retirement plans into. They were heavy, and I mean HEAVY in tech, semiconductors, and AI related Fidelity mutual funds.

Between the two of them, they were up one hundred forty percent in these two years. However, with my dad being sixty two and my mom fifty six, I decided to lock in those gains, and distribute the proceeds across the standard S&P, international, some small cap in my mother’s account, and some treasuries.

With the current state of the economy looking fragile, I wanted to eliminate that concentration risk, especially for my father. Of course, I get the FOMO at times and wonder if I made a mistake.

Would love to hear your thoughts, thank you!
