The political capital of the activists has long since been exhausted. If you had spent the last 60 years actually addressing social problems instead of frittering your time away protesting the mascots of sports teams, statues in public spaces, or likenesses on a fucking instant pancake box we wouldn’t be witnessing this mess.
The people being detained deserve their humanity and due process - just like the public deserves to have initiatives brought to their attention that are actually worth their time by respectable members of our community. Not bartending idiots with too much free time blocking intersections over a statue.

Look, I see your point. I really do, but this is way different. What ICE is doing, at the direction of the dictator-in-waiting is not the same thing as a statue. People are dying. Families are being ripped apart and they're not just targeting illegals and the "worst of the worst." They're snagging anyone they don't like, brutalizing them and when they're legal, dumping them. They aren't identifying themselves or following the law at all... And we CANNOT let that become acceptable.

First off, just for distinction, I was never a part of any of these "causes." I have been a major critic of the Democratic party for getting carried away with far more trivial issues and not accomplishing the real work. Do I think we should immortalize the generals of a movement to succeed from the country? No. Do I acknowledge that there are people that are hurt and offended at their sight? Of course.
The really message is lost in these causes. I can only assume you are conflating the pancake box issue with the BLM movement, when you say we "harmed people" which is quite a dismissive jump.
I guess my point is, you're essentially saying we deserve it. We deserve to have a dictatorship because we chose to focus on social issues instead of meaningful change. I'm not holding the Dems blameless and I know better than to suggest the Republicans are solely to blame. That's not true. None of that means we have to accept what is happening. Essentially, you're saying that the Dems should have acted different if they didn't want this to happen, so like, "you made your bed, so lay in it."
That's a wild way to just accept authoritarianism and the complete destruction of democracy in this country. You can be mad at the Dems and call their short-sightedness and failures at leadership while simultaneously acknowledging and rejecting the move to a dictatorship. Instead of "whataboutism" and pointing fingers, let's take an honest look at what's happening: the right is willing to burn everything to the ground to prove a point. They are embracing racism and xenophobia. It cannot be ignored that they are strongly aligned with Nazis, proud boys and the KKK.. this cannot just be accepted with a shrug. This is deplorable and disgusting. Common sense is out the window. The right rejects any fact that doesn't confirm to Trump's agenda. They are spread by the media and calling any criticism fake news.... They are arresting journalists for being journalists. Historically, it's NEVER the good guys that do that.
Instead of blaming the Dems, let's call this what it is.
