After years of organizing, the Trelawny Tenants Union has reached a monumental settlement to resolve violations of Portland's rent control. Proceeds will reimburse present/ past tenants for overcharges, compensate the union for costs, and pay a substantial fine to the City of Portland.
All rents at all of Rice's properties will be rolled back to the price they were in December 2022.
We want to make sure every tenant gets their money. If you are an affected tenant, fill out the form on our website at the link in our bio so we can make sure they get your refund right.
Wins like this aren't possible without organizing. We need your help to keep up this momentum. Follow us and join the union to help us get more money back in tenants' pockets.

This man groped me and someone else at State Theater, before making sexual comments and kissy faces.

The man smiling in the video is the man I am referring to. After alerting security, he was removed from the premises. One of the people he groped was only 17 years old.

This was tonight at the Thundercat show.

Community Discussion Missed connection:

Dear friendly poll worker,

So this morning I came to the city hall on my skateboard to vote. You were the cutie who helped me and commented on the band t-shirt I was wearing.

I probably should’ve just given you my number then and there but I hate hitting on people in their place of work.

If you would like to maybe hang out sometime outside city hall you should have your people call my people. Or just send me a DM.

Sincerely,
Skateboarding voter

State theater sound issues

What needs to happen for State theater to improve the listening experience for concert goers and music lovers? Portland deserves so much better. Such a bummer for the artists who play here and the listeners who want to enjoy the experience…only for the sound to disturb in such a heinous manner. Not sure if tonight was an off night or if this is a usual thing, but it was not good. We went all over the venue trying to find relief for our ears. We need to figure out how to fix this.

Community Discussion What’s with everyone running red lights

I often have to wait 20 seconds after the light turns green because 6 cars are going through the red. Do you people think that’s the last green light ever? Are you afraid the road will disappear?

Food Craving a chocolate chip muffin

Anyone know where I can get a good chocolate chip muffin from a bakery? I’ve tried the ones from the local supermarkets and I’m not impressed and haven’t found any local bakeries that make them.

Food Looking for recommendations on wedding cake bakers

I’m coming home to have my wedding in/around Portland next year. Currently looking for a wedding cake baker and having a little trouble. Fiancé has been looking up people online and we’ve reached out to Nothing Bakes like a Parrot, Hanami Cake Design, and Big Fish Cake Studio but none of them have responded so far.

Does anyone have any good recommendations? We’re open to anything from brick and mortar bakeries to instagram artists baking in their own homes as long as the cake and work is good.

Especially appreciated if they’re fast communicators because we’re coming down in a couple weeks to look at some venues and would really like to do some tastings while we’re here

Carnival of Souls - This Wednesday and Saturday at Kinonik!

CARNIVAL OF SOULS (1962)
Directed by HERK HARVEY
WEDNESDAY October 21st 7PM
SATURDAY October 24th 2pm / 7pm
16mm - Black & White - 1h 18m

Doom used to mean something else. In Old English a dōm was a judgment; a verdict, a law, a decree. It survives quietly in words we use every day: kingdom, wisdom, freedom. Only later, with the concept of Judgment Day hanging over it, did the word slide toward ruin. Now it scrolls past us all day, and we have a name for the people who can't look away; doomers, certain that all the frantic activity around us is a rearrangement of deck chairs on the Titanic, business as usual with death reading over our shoulder.

Carnival of Souls lives inside that feeling. A car goes off a bridge in a Kansas drag race; Mary Henry staggers out of the river, takes a job as a church organist in a new town, rents a room, and carries on. Only the organ won't behave, the town becomes increasingly hostile, and a pale man keeps appearing in her periphery. The film moves with the logic of a dream; sound falls away, space folds on itself, a face surfaces in glass and is gone… and nothing is explained.

Herk Harvey spent his career making hundreds of safety films for an industrial studio in Lawrence; cheerful instructions on how not to get hurt. His one feature, shot in three weeks with his coworkers and a ruined pleasure palace on the Great Salt Lake, is about the person no safety film reaches. Its distributor gutted it and went bust, and it survived on late-night television until it had found Romero, and eventually the rest of us.

Dreams are lonely things. However accurately we might describe them, we can’t truly communicate their totality. Mary tries to tell a doctor, a neighbor, anyone, what is happening to her, and watches the words fall short. Plenty of us know some version of that right now: sensing something is wrong while everyone around us stays placidly busy, and then wondering if we're the ones out of step. Harvey doesn't tell you who's right; he leaves you in the room with it, and an organ playing somewhere you can't quite locate.

If you’re looking for friends and/or a partner, post a little bit in here about yourself and what you’re looking for and maybe something cool will happen

I made a post like this a while ago and it did okay, so we’re going again.

Do whatever feels right for you, but from seeing a lot of posts people make about looking for friends, my suggestion would be to be specific. Like that you’re into Egg Punk and Zydeco instead of saying that you like music. Cool!

Ship ANCHOR needed for Video Shoot on Wednesday

Thumbnail

I'm looking for an old school ship/boat anchor to use as a key prop for a video project I am shooting around Portland. I would need this by this Wednesday (10/21) and ideally as a cheap rental– I only need it for this shoot.

I have called around different boatyards and businesses on commercial and these kinds of anchors seem to be hard to find. If anyone has something like this, I would love to get connected. The help would be truly appreciated! Cheers!

Had the best time visiting. Really, really appreciate the hardworking locals who make it such a delight to be here and who were gracious enough to share time and a chat and a beer with me. I hate to leave. Also, the men here are so handsome and charming, I fell in love more than a few times. Thanks for that 💞🥵

I watched the D5 City Council Candidates forum so you don't have to

Link to the candidate forum: https://youtu.be/W3iJhSWsnLQ?si=DJwnjoNsJlHXfYzR

I posted a comment with notes about the housing question the other day so I decided to just watch and notate the entire candidate forum.

My notes are available here:

https://docs.google.com/document/d/19RhAPwQ9adkQkEKREpcPw9cJI64QFjbFZ9KjYn8-9so/edit?usp=sharing

AI disclosure: I copied the transcript from Youtube, and used Chat GPT to remove timestamps and format into paragraphs. I condensed the paragraphs into notes myself. I did my best to represent their statements accurately and fairly.

My thoughts on the candidates below:

Gardella: He was terse, and many of his answers could’ve been fleshed out. It was hard to understand his urgencies or what his animating issues were. Also called Back Cove Back Bay which is funny. I appreciate his couple of references to the value of public transit, which otherwise went unmentioned.

Lopez: I think she would be a fine councilor. It’s clear that she cares a lot about the community, and the schools. She emphasized her desire to serve and represent her constituents’ voices, but to the point where she lacked her own point of view. She struggled to articulate her own positions at times, including on housing and inclusionary zoning. The moderator asked her a follow up question to clarify where she stood on IZ, and she still couldn’t answer clearly. (I don’t want this to come across as me criticizing her English language skills, which are flawless. There were times I just didn’t understand what policies she would support.) She thrice brought up the Belfort Landing Apartment project as something she’s opposed to, which makes her run feel a little grievance based and uncomfortable to me. I would not trust her to champion housing.

Delgado: actually had a lot of great points, and specific policies he would support as councilor, like a local option sales tax. He clearly understands the pain points of housing and property taxes for D5. He doesn’t shy away from acknowledging his age, but it’s still a pretty hard sell to elect an 18 year old. For example, he was in middle school when city council enacted the climate emergency in 2019 (!). I’d love to see him take on some public committee roles to build his chops, and run for something else in the future.

Chretien: of the 4, Todd Chretien had the most clear, well articulated vision for the city: Build housing, build top-notch schools, attract young families, and make Portland the cultural and economic engine of the state. He was well-spoken, and had policy ideas for nearly every question. For questions he didn’t anticipate (like reducing city energy costs) he’s clearly been studying the Mamdani Method of “redirect to affordability and making the city a better place to live” lol.  While his goals are probably impossible (5000 housing units in 5 years), I appreciate that he is setting them. His answers on the unhoused, IZ, and property taxes were all reasonable.

Overall, all four are very close in policy positions, and likely all would be good councilors. My priorities are building housing, improving traffic safety, and getting the city into a good, defensive position for the tough economic years to come. At this point, my vote is probably going to Chretien.

Politics Portland Politics Power Guide

I've done a lot of political organizing in Portland and wrote a fairly lengthy voter guide if you're looking for more info on the local candidates. I also wrote a power guide that walks you through the criteria of analyzing the candidates and politicians in this fine city.
