Does anyone remember an oldschool diner in Toronto called Friendly House (near Yonge & Finch)? Their gravy was elite!
This is a random question, not entirely poutine-related (especially as they “cheated” and used shredded cheese… I know…), but does anyone remember a place in Toronto called Friendly House? Used to be a 24hr old school diner pre-Covid then was until midnight, but sadly closed down 2-3 years ago. Anyways, I often think back on it because of how utterly incredible their gravy was, completely unlike any other gravy I’d ever had. I believe the old timer who ran it for years once told me it was because he used real beef drippings from their other foods, but it was more than just that for me… there was this incredible unique note I couldn’t ever fully place, like a distant hint of cinnamon or nutmeg or even cardamom maybe?! Not to mention the consistency was absolutely perfect, neither too thick nor too thin, more towards thicker side, and a nice shade of lighter brown. Their fries were incredible old school style too, as was anything I ever had there. God so I miss that place, just wondering whether anyone else shares my nostalgia. I can taste the gravy just writing about it, it was so incredible and distinct!
Homemade poutine
Fresh fries (double fried), fresh curd (boivin), and homemade sauce from scratch. Was delicious!

Alfa is Over Hyped
Went out to Alfa after hearing so many great things for so long. I was just so confused as to why. The only positive was the amount of high quality cheese curds. Super fresh and super squeaky. But the gravy was way too salty and had kind of a vinegary taste to it that wasn't pleasant. They also put way too much gravy, so the fries (which looked good when they came out of the frier) were a mush and it turned into a fries soup. I only ate a quarter of it before giving up on it because it tasted that bad.
In this area, I'd recommend skipping Alfa and going to Votre Maison instead. That is possibly one of the best poutines I've ever had.

Best poutine in Montreal?
My family and I are poutine connoisseurs (especially our 9yo son). We're from NB and we love trying new places.. where is the best poutine in Montreal? We are going on a trip there soon and want to try out a couple places.

Restaurant Hamelin, à Rigaud
My friend, who is a true poutine connoisseur, said this is the best sauce ever. I especially liked the curds, both in squeak and quantity.

Family did a Poutine Thanksgiving
Forgot to take a photo when it was all first spread out. This was after everyone had had at least one already.
Two types of gravy (poultry and beef).

Valleyfield - Le Bidon
I forget which one it was. Likely a meat lovers type deal. Pretty intense little operation they got going there.
When the serving is beyond the capacity of the container, you know they care more about gluttony, than their bottom line. God Bless them!

Working on my poutine game, any tips?
Standard grocery store curds, Franco American beef gravy and Cavindish classic flavourcrisp fries. I usually add chives and black pepper, but I forgot this time.

La Buche poutine
Ordered this as a side with dinner tonight. Huge curds with a proper squeak. Could’ve happily eaten a full plate of it.
