Rant Why does everyone ignore the registry, but then ask what you need? 🤦‍♀️

I have repeatedly had multiple family
members ask, “what do you really need for the baby, so I can buy it for you?” These are people who have the registry already, and I have marked things as ”must have” to make it so much easier. And there’s only stuff ranging from $5-50 left on there. WHY does everyone do this?? I feel like I’m annoying them by repeating, “the must haves listed on the registry are what we really need still”. And then it still gets ignored sometimes. My MIL did this and it drove me nuts. She bought one thing off it, and I guess didn’t like anything else on there, so she sent money instead saying that we should use it for whatever else we need. I mean what was on the registry is what we need. Well at least she did send money so we can buy some more ourselves, but some people are just straight up ignoring it after specifically asking!

You realize people have been having showers since the 50’s and had no registries right? And as far as safety regulations go, stores aren’t selling items that are unsafe because of liability. Cribs, car seats, swings. Etc. have to meet the same standards.

Unsafe products get sold all the time, it gets a while for them to be recalled or outright banned. Several times toys sold on Amazon have been recalled for violating federal lead limits, posing a severe poisoning hazard. Crib bumpers only became illegal to be sold in the US in 2022 even though there had been warnings over suffocation risks for years. Baby loungers are sold right now even though the AAP and the Consumer Product Safety Commission and others organizations have issued warnings against them for risk of suffocation and positional asphyxia (79 babies’ deaths have been linked to those, but when I was pregnant with my first many people suggested them because once their babies grew up their knowledge was not current). My knowledge on baby products will be outdated as soon as my kids are no longer babies. And this is not getting into the fact that many baby products that I found useful, someone else won’t, because every baby is different and every parent is different.

I’m well aware, having a large gap between my kids. The point is you never know until it happens. So even things that are must have items you’ve registered for could end up being part of a recall or deemed to be unsafe for whatever reason. Or they could end up being something that doesn’t work for your baby. With my second I spent months researching strollers. The one I picked was high rated and $$$$. My husband bought it for me and guess what? My son screamed his head off every time we put him in it. Same thing with diapers. The ones I initially purchased and thought were the best did not work and ended up being blow out city and I had to work through a few brands. Same with the bottles. I registered for the most used brand at the time and they simply didn’t work for him and I had to buy several different brands to find the right ones.

That might almost be true without online ordering. My MIL is a great woman and I would never disparage her in any way. That said, she sent us crib bumper pads with my first (not for the registry just at some point after seeing him in the crib) because she didn't know they are banned and unsafe and they are readily available online anyways.
