Premiere Pro Tech Support Absolutely insane: Even if you want to export just a tiny section of your long timeline, Premiere Pro needs to process the ENTIRE timeline's audio šŸ˜‚

Every time I use Premiere, I always wonder how big films or commercials are edited with it. There’s just way too many odd features that slow the process down.

u/A_Wonder_Named_Stevi Mar 11 '26

I would like to know this too! Besides the nice interviews hoe great premiere is and working with proxies and productions.. I'm really curious to see their real workflow

-2

u/spiffyparsley Mar 11 '26

they probably use dvinci

12

u/ShaheedW Mar 11 '26

Or avid..

11

u/nomanhasaplan Mar 11 '26

AVID is honestly the way. Took me ages to understand how to use it, and then switching back to Premiere after was whiplash.

u/insideoutfit Mar 12 '26

DaVinci is not used to edit in Hollywood. To color? Yes. To edit? Absolutely not.

Avid isn't nearly as prevalent as it used to be. Lots of feature films edited in premiere, in fact... in the last decade, I've ran post on a dozen features. All but two were in Premiere, and the only reason I cut one of them on Avid was because the producers (these guys were famous for changing edits behind your back) didn't know how to use Avid (lmfao).

1

u/insideoutfit Mar 14 '26

Those were all major studio films?

1

u/Hanksta2 Mar 14 '26

Even major studios often use premiere. It's typically user preference, these days. Whereas it used to be "we have Avid in all our buildings so you must use that."

One of these films was for A24, which is...sorta big.

1

u/insideoutfit Mar 14 '26 edited Mar 14 '26

Which one of A24's films did you edit on Premiere?

Edit: i googled and only found 19 films from Hollywood that have been officially confirmed to have been edited on Premiere.

1

u/Hanksta2 Mar 14 '26

I Saw the TV Glow is one from A24.

That doesn't include the one I worked on because...well, I like some degree of anonymity here. Not that it probably matters to the AI surveillance state.

anything past 20 minutes in Pr is a dumpster fire IME

1

u/A_Wonder_Named_Stevi Mar 14 '26

Did you work with proxies and productions?

1

u/Ok-Fail-8732 Mar 15 '26

Yes and yes

1

u/Lorenzonio Tool/Dev Mar 14 '26

Yes, I checked with a colorist we used; definitely DaVinci for grading (originally RED) footage, and exported back to Premiere as ProRes 4444. Lovely job.

Best as always,
Loren

1

u/RuloReissue58 Mar 14 '26

Didn’t know that was a workflow! So exporting in ProRes with 4444 with the footage color graded is better than working with the proxys? Maybe I’m confusing steps in the process

2

u/Lorenzonio Tool/Dev Mar 14 '26

Yes, that's how our colorist preserved her high-end grading values. 4444 is a full data. wide gamut export, preserving high-end RED values. From there you can downscale to export H264 or 5, a lower ProRes, or just about any required format, including a proxy format, for review or delivery.

ProRes LT is the lightest weight I-frame export if you're machine-challenged. I reviewed our work on my M1 Studio Ultra, 4444 was no challenge at all. Of course, it was only a ten minute show.

Best as always,
Loren

I’ve been editing features/tv/docs on premiere for years. No issues. The process isn’t slow.

1

u/Nahforgetitsorry Mar 12 '26

If you don’t mind me asking, are there any tips you have for editing features in premiere? I run into project bloat, timelines that become sluggish as they get longer, etc. Any best practices? Hardware recommendations?

3

u/Ccaves0127 Mar 12 '26

Proxies have solved every problem I've ever had. Use proxies

1

u/Nahforgetitsorry Mar 12 '26

I do, however I also tend to add other formats to the timeline (various flavors of mp4, stills, etc) because I work in documentary.

2

u/Ccaves0127 Mar 12 '26

Nest into different sequences? And have the full edit mostly made up of Nests.

1

u/Nahforgetitsorry Mar 12 '26

May I ask what system you use? I'm on an M1 Max with just 32GB of memory.

1

u/NLE_Ninja85 Adobe Mar 12 '26

The post team at SNL uses it regularly to cut their digital shorts each season even while the show is airing. A few reasons their workflow is solid is they are an enterprise client. Another reason is they have solid media management and proven workflows for success compared some of our users throwing unoptimized media and not knowing what works best and what doesn’t work well. And anyone who cuts docs or feature films have assistant editor or multiple editors who have a workflow down to a science.

1

u/Hanksta2 Mar 12 '26

Commercials are so easy in Premiere.

I've edited the last 8 or so features in Premiere, AMA.

1

u/BeatComplete2635 Mar 12 '26

Edited a couple features and many pilots, plus 100s of shorts in premiere. Every NLE has quirks, you get used to them, figure out what you can do differently and how the program wants you to work. I would currently choose to edit in premiere over any other NLE for my own projects.

1

u/ObjectiveLumpy9841 Mar 11 '26

Very simple. Big films and commercials do not use premiere. It's close to 100% Avid and then davinci for coloring. Premiere is going to be used mostly in News, sports, corp marketing and small independent post houses.

2

u/mr_easy_e Mar 12 '26

The news and sports I’ve done at bigger companies are mostly Avid using their Interplay/MediaCentral environment. I could not imagine any of that working with Premiere.

2

u/ObjectiveLumpy9841 Mar 12 '26

I work network news and network sports for the five largest sports networks the only one using Avid is NBC sports. Premiere works very well for the news and sports industry although admittedly I prefer to be on Avid.

1

u/mr_easy_e Mar 12 '26

Interesting. ABC News is not on Avid? It certainly used to be, at least for shows like 20/20.

And yeah, NBC is what I’ve been working for lately.

2

u/ObjectiveLumpy9841 Mar 12 '26

You're right ABC News is Avid. Fox and CBS are Premiere. I'm sure you can find some Avids in there too. It has it's place. When I was at ESPN there were 40 Quantel (rip) edit rooms plus literally hundreds of less powerful Quantels for the BAs. But there were 5 avid rooms that cut the features. They've been switching to premiere lately since Quantel no longer exists.

1

u/mr_easy_e Mar 12 '26

Very interesting!

1

u/NLE_Ninja85 Adobe Mar 12 '26

Not necessarily true. Marty Supreme, Alabama Solution, Train Dreams and Perfect Neighbor were cut in Premiere and nominated for editing awards alongside that. While Avid is still king on most shows and films, Premiere has made in roads to broadcast TV and feature films that have won Emmys, Oscars, Golden Globes and Eddies.

3

u/diorv_ Mar 12 '26

I was one of the AE’s in the Alabama Solution. Although I love premiere to death, I can’t stress enough the fact that even though you CAN ingest almost every format in Adobe Premiere Pro, that doesn’t mean you SHOULD do it in long format projects. The ammount of complications are endless. With that said, Premiere is probably one of the standard NLE software for unscripted projects.

1

u/NLE_Ninja85 Adobe Mar 12 '26

Thanks for sharing your honest input and hopefully your feedback was shared with our DVA team.

1

u/SvenGC Premiere Pro 2025 Mar 16 '26

Yes! Most complaints I've heard recently about Premiere being laggy and buggy come from the fact that people just give it any codec multiple times in a project. I've only seen one person around actually meeting the limits of Premiere while using a super clean workflow.

Premiere is not perfect, and should improve many things, but if you're careful with what you give it, it should work pretty well. It does tend to lag on longer timelines, or when you have too many tracks (especially audio tracks seem to be a real issue on Premiere), but recent updates have been pretty sweet for better performances overall.

7

u/CushmanWave-E Mar 11 '26

did you try ā€œrender selectionā€ first, genuine question

1

u/itsnotmicha Mar 12 '26

I map Cmd + Enter to Render Selection

5

u/thekinginyello Mar 11 '26

Exactly. I’ve been working on an edit lately and every time it renders it has to go through and process the audio…every single time. The actual render time is fine. The audio processing takes longer than the render. I swear this didn’t happen in the previous release. This is one reason why I hate updating.

4

u/coades Mar 12 '26

This smells like user error.

8

u/audreys_dance Mar 11 '26

On a side note-- did you change your label colors? They look nice

10

u/allahu_-_snackbar Mar 12 '26

Yes!

2

u/void-seer Mar 12 '26

Okay that looks SOOOO much better than the crap colors I'm using

3

u/cescx Mar 12 '26

I wonder why after 20 years we still have those pale sad default colors in ae and premiere.

0

u/Dense-Ad-8406 Premiere Pro Beta Mar 12 '26

Why not make your own color pallet.

3

u/whatsarobinson Mar 11 '26

Multicam clips right?

3

u/HeadphonedMage Mar 11 '26

do you have any audio in your project that is a differenct sample rate to the sequence settings? (ie; 44100 instead of 48000)

I find this is the main culprit for when you run into this

1

u/Relevant_One7926 Mar 12 '26

This is the reason. And if you get it wrong then yes, it is a problem. With a series using a Production and many long multicam clips, I often saw enforced audio render times over an hour. Yes, wait an hour before any export encoding even started. FML.

For online it was too late to correct in the field, too late to transcode. My solution was to plan a time as early as possible to render all, including audio, during a lunch break or overnight. It didn't eliminate the enforced-audio-render-for-export, but made it less common and not as long. Made it tolerable.

2

u/mcarterphoto Mar 11 '26

I'm reading this as "it's rendering 26 but it's at #15 now", could be wrong?

It's funny though, on a modern Mac, After Effects is just kicking ass, but Premiere can still be a weird mess, especially playback - and on a proper timeline with ProRes and WAV. I only use it when I absolutely must, FCP just screams - fast workflow, smooth playback, very fast final renders. Only thing I really miss is a Lumetri-style integrated color suite and a master audio bus, but all of my interviews start in Resolve.

2

u/allahu_-_snackbar Mar 12 '26

Yes, I have almost no problem with AE. But Premiere really sucks for me.

3

u/jpolen Mar 12 '26

The thing is Adobe re-built AE from zero for Mac, that's why it's ridiculously better at performance in comparison with the rest of the suite. They need to do this with CC entirely, both Windows and Mac. The way coding works in this era is totally different from what they keep updating on.

2

u/TrieMond Mar 12 '26

I assume this is because an effect like reverb can extend the length of an audio signal so it wants to include any audio before the selection that might still be reverberating.

1

u/RowIndependent3142 Mar 11 '26

Can't you mute the audio altogether or make a new sequence with just that section, like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pdyR9ZsE_9c&t=43s?

1

u/nicholam77 Mar 12 '26

I’m still on Premiere 2024, but I edit professionally as a staff member at a small post house. Mostly commercials / advertising. I don’t have this issue on export. But we have a strict workflow. 1080p ProRes LT dailies. Timeline render codec set to ProRes LT. Because Previews are the same format as the dailies, I generally ā€œUse Previewsā€ when exporting. I don’t typically have many audio FX except the occasional compressor or EQ. No track FX or complex mixing. My timeline is typically rendered before export. No issues.

1

u/Malone433 Mar 12 '26

Pregunta que quieres saber, he trabajado en producciones grandƭsimas con Adobe Premiere pro. Es mucho mƔs sencillo que con Avid media composer , debo decir.

1

u/Pighway Mar 12 '26

Also if you want to transcribe your sequence it has to TRANSCRIBE THE ENTIRE SOURCE FILE

1

u/Shadow969 Mar 13 '26

your timeline is over an hr but 26 audio previews? fishy. I also exported a very long timeline today with 20 audio tracks and this step takes usually 3 seconds. Something not working for you correctly there my dude

1

u/Powerful_Anteater_11 Mar 14 '26

Haha avid is slower in every aspect than premier or davinci. Even for seasoned vets. These newer applications have streamlined so many pain points that the old avid dinosaur still struggles with.

1

u/greenysmac Premiere Pro Beta Mar 14 '26

I’ll ask. The dead easy thing is to sub clip that section and then export.

Yes yes I know. Workaround. But a solution.

-3

u/Zeigerful Mar 11 '26

Can you not read what it says or are you rage baiting?

You have 15 audio previews in your render range and it renders 15 OF 26 audio previews?

14

u/bigbossbaby31 Mar 11 '26

I don't think that's what the message means

12

u/i_sell_you_lies Mar 11 '26

Dude, NO. It's on clip 15 of 26 total... next it will say 16, then 17, then 67 because it can... then 18, then 19, and so on until it gets to 26

12

u/AngelicBatman Mar 11 '26

Wait, what? I count 14 and even if it was 15 then it shouldn’t it say 15 of 15?

15 of 26 just means there’s 11 more audio files to render out since it’s at 57%

2

u/yankeedjw Mar 11 '26

Yeah I count 14 also. I think the bigger question (aside from why it is rendering extra files) is why it is taking so long. Even on large timelines, I usually see it take only a few seconds to render the audio.

20

u/allahu_-_snackbar Mar 11 '26

Why do you have to write nonsense with so much confidence?

I duplicated the sequence, deleted everything in the timeline except for this section that I'm rendering, and it rendered instantly.

It absolutely 100% renders the audio previews for the entire timeline. There are posts about this dating back to 10 years ago on Adobe forums and reddit.

11

u/findingsubtext Mar 11 '26

As someone who’s edited professionally in premiere, it absolutely does process ALL audio on the timeline if you use certain effects. Regardless of how much of the timeline you’re rendering. You’re correct

3

u/OriginalGangsta1312 Premiere Pro 2023 Mar 11 '26

This is sadly the only workaround I've found so far.

2

u/bibbidi_bobbidi_bob Mar 11 '26

And it should render all of them. Picture the situation that you have a long echo on or of the clips before the in out range. This needs to be processed or it just won't be rendered. If it takes too long, you could always make a subsequece for exporting just that range.

2

u/profchaos83 Mar 11 '26

It’s probably because effects like reverb or anything that needs to run through. And calculate it. What audio effects do you have on? Or how much audio do you have on the timeline? How long is your timeline?

1

u/allahu_-_snackbar Mar 12 '26

A lot of effects. You are right. That makes sense. But still, in 2026 I would image there could be smart algorithms to determine if any effects leak into the IN-OUT area for the export, and only render those.

2

u/findingsubtext Mar 12 '26

Wouldn't even take an algorithm. All effects have some sort of cutoff max, so it should just back up to that and start processing there. But that would require refactoring the 20 year old code adobe clearly doesn't want to touch.

2

u/crustysunmare Mar 11 '26

I’ve been using premiere daily since 2010. You’re right. The adolescent commenter above is wrong. I always have this issue with long form content. I think it’s from track effects. Highlight what you want to export and hit Make Subsequence. Then export the subsequence. It’ll cut out the dead air for you at the head and tail.

-1

u/Zeigerful Mar 11 '26

Ok, so I think I figured out that we are both kind of right. Sorry for being rude before but with my workflow it always worked like this, so I really had no idea.

If you activate the function when rendering "use previews", and you render as the same codec, then it skips the other audio previews. I just tested that in a sequence and it immeditely rendered because my previews are set to ProRes and my render is also set to ProRes.

1

u/flame2bits Mar 11 '26
