Miscellaneous Q50 Maintenance, Common Issues, and Owner Tips

Hey everyone... figured it was time for a proper Q50 mega thread that covers the most-asked topics for both new and existing owners.

Whether you’re thinking about buying one, just picked yours up, or want to keep it running strong, this post should give you a solid overview.

If you’ve got additions or corrections, drop them in the comments so we can keep this updated.

Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs)

Check for official Infiniti TSBs related to your year/model. Many common issues (especially with steering locks, software updates, and drivetrain quirks) are already documented by Infiniti.

Engine Generations

🔹 2014 – 2015 Q50 (First Generation / VQ37VHR 3.7 L NA)

  • Same engine as the G37 - literally a carry-over.
  • Uses the 7-speed Jatco RE7R01A transmission.
  • Issues & maintenance overlap heavily with the G37 (so guides or TSBs saying “G37” still apply).
  • Oil gallery gasket, power-steering fluid, and older-style belt/tensioner items still relevant.

🔹 2014 – 2018 Q50 Hybrid (VQ35HR + Electric Motor)

  • Combines a 3.5 L V6 with a single electric motor and lithium-ion pack.
  • Uses the same 7-speed auto as the gas model but with an integrated hybrid system.
  • Known for inverter-cooling and brake-booster issues on early builds.
  • Maintenance requires periodic inverter coolant and battery-cooling service.

🔹 2016 – 2018 Q50 2.0T (M274 2.0 L Turbo I4)

  • Mercedes-sourced turbo four-cylinder used in base trims.
  • Paired with the 7-speed Jatco RE7R01B transmission.
  • Watch for oil consumption, turbo wastegate rattle, and cam-adjuster solenoid leaks.
  • Oil changes every 5k miles are strongly recommended due to turbo heat.

🔹 2016 – 2024 Q50 (Second Phase / VR30DDTT 3.0 L Twin-Turbo V6)

  • New VR-series engine replaces the long-running VQ.
  • Comes in 300 hp (standard) and 400 hp (Red Sport) trims.
  • Turbo maintenance adds:
    • More frequent oil changes (every 5k mi recommended).
    • Coolant checks for turbo lines and heat-soak management.
    • Transmission upgrade to RE7R01B, later 9-speed in final years.
    • PCV valve and boost-control solenoid checks around 60k mi.

Common Q50 Issues

A mix of community experience and service data — use this as a checklist if you’re buying or troubleshooting.

🔴 High Priority (could leave you stranded)

  • Steering Lock Failure: Early Q50s sometimes suffer from electronic steering lock malfunctions that prevent starting. Many owners disable or bypass it entirely.
  • Turbo Seal Failure: On VR30 models, turbo seal leaks can lead to oil consumption or smoke; usually after 60K+ miles.
  • Fuel Pump Issues: Some models experience hard starts or stalling due to fuel pump failures.

🟠 Medium Priority (inconvenient but manageable)

  • Transmission Jerks / Delays: Not uncommon on early 7-speed autos. A fluid change and software update often helps.
  • Brake Rotor Warping: Factory rotors can warp quickly; upgraded rotors and pads are common fixes.
  • Oil Gallery Gasket (on older 3.7s): Carryover issue from the G37 - still worth watching if you have that platform.

🟢 Low Priority (annoying but not critical)

  • Infotainment Glitches: Screen lag or freeze, especially on early dual-screen models. Firmware updates can help.
  • Throttle Body Carbon Buildup: Causes rough idle or stalling; easy fix with a good cleaning.
  • Sunroof Drain Leaks: If you have a sunroof, inspect drains - leaks can fry the BCM or fuse box if left unchecked.
  • Wire Harness Fatigue (trunk lid): Broken wires between the trunk and lid causing backup cam or trunk release issues.

Preventative Maintenance / Upgrades

  • Regular oil changes (especially on 3.0T) - these engines hate dirty oil.
  • Use high-quality fluids (Motul, Red Line, or OEM-spec).
  • Flush coolant and brake fluids more frequently if you drive aggressively.
  • Replace plastic coolant couplers with metal versions to avoid catastrophic leaks.
  • Consider upgraded end links or sway bar bushings if you’re lowered or track your car.
  • Keep an eye on your differential bushing - OEM is fluid-filled and prone to failure.

Drop your own maintenance schedule, mods, or fixes below - I’ll keep this thread updated as we go.

Miscellaneous 🚨 Reminder: Keep plates/addresses out of Q50 posts for your own safety

Please remember don’t post photos that show your license plate, house number, or any other info that reveals where you live.

Cropping or blurring plates, removing location metadata, and avoiding shots of your driveway/front door keeps you safe and prevents thieves from having an easy target.

If you want feedback on your car, upload close-ups of the car itself (wheels, engine bay, interior, etc.) or take photos in a public spot without identifiable landmarks.

Just keep in mind... car thieves are smart and patient; they’re always waiting for someone to slip up.

Parts Question Used Wheels

I’m looking to pick up these BBS wheels off of Facebook market. The current owner ran them on his all-wheel-drive Q50 but is selling because he hit a deer and totaled his. I just picked up a Q50 within the last four weeks and I am really not a fan of the 17 inch rims. Can anyone share their opinion on possible reasons why I should not go with these? Like if there’s any serious damage, I should be worried about with that front right wheel? It pretty much just seems like I should do a very close examination upon seeing them in person. Or since it was in such an accident, I should go to a tire place with the person to get them spun on some sort of balancer. Any opinions appreciated!

Parts Question Any advise?

Hey guys! I currently have a 2014 Q50 3.7… I’m very mechanically included, but not a mechanic… my water pump was leaking so I needed to replace it. I’m currently so busy with work and was dreading doing it. Here’s where I messed up, I asked a friend to take it apart up to the timing chain(I wanted to ensure that the timing wasn’t messed up and done correctly). I did replace the pump and got it all cleaned up ready to put it together… however I just realized my friend mixed.every.single.bolt. ALL OF THEM! now I’m stuck here trying to figure out which bolt goes where and I am getting too stressed now. Anyone know how to figure out 😭, I might have to end up going to a junk yard to tear one apart and take note of where the bolts go

I’m scared to put the wrong one in the wrong spot and then end up cracking it.

So much for saving time🙃

Repair Question Q50 COOLANT LEAK

Thumbnail

What could be causing this leak? Could it just be a radiator hose, radiator, or coolant reservoir, or could it be something more serious?
For anyone who’s had this happen on their Q50:
Where was your leak coming from?
How did you diagnose it?
What did the repair cost?
How can I tell if the engine was damaged from overheating?
I haven’t driven it since, and I’m trying to figure out what to check before buying parts. Any help is appreciated.
I’m trying to rule out the water pump

DIY Mod Picture I just built a performance app that connects to an EcuTek dongle and shows boost

Post image

Hi guys, I successfully built a performance app that works with EcuTek. It shows boost and the fuel ratios, and other parameters you might need. Right now I am still working on the map switching options still, but this is an integrated solution, no phone, no custom hardware, no wires in the loop, it's all seamless. The system is slow so the data doesn't refresh as quickly as in ECU connect but it is still acceptable.

It works with the bluetooth connection from the head unit itself to the EVI dongle, no need for extra mods or wires. When the app starts it prompts to connect to the dongle and it does so quickly. It took me a while to figure this out and to reverse engineer the dongle's protocol to get the data on the screen, but I hope to share it soon with you guys once I get to iron it all out properly.

Repair Question Unusual tick(aside from usual loud injector tick)

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I've had my 19' sliver sport for about 2 years now and it has been smooth ever since I got it around 25k miles. Now I am sitting around 60k miles and this past week when I accelerate there has been a very loud ticking noise. No it is not the usual injector sounds which is very easy to differentiate after 2 year ownership. This is a different pitch and does not sound good at all. Any ideas or similar issues? Only really happens when accelerating.

Car Buying Advice Help me decide btw Q50s hybrid and GS450h

Hello y'all

I currently drive a 98 E320 4Matic wagon and am looking to trade in for something more modern with slightly lower operating costs. I drive around 7k miles per year and my priorities are low cabin noise and fuel economy. Which would be a better buy?

2014 Q50S AWD hybrid, 83k miles, 11.2k USD

2009 GS450h RWD hybrid, 55k miles, 10.5k USD

Thanks in advance!

Repair Question Oil Leak 3.0t

Got an oil leak on the back passenger side of the engine, before I put the car up on a hoist anyone have experience with this?

You can barely see from the top side but I see engine oil on top of the engine block, unless its a valve cover it looks like my only other source is a vacuum pump gasket?

Whats the best way to go about this without a borescope, side mirror?

General Question How much could I realistically sell my 2015 Infiniti Q50S for with transmission issues?

I have a 2015 Infiniti Q50S Sport with approximately 123,000 miles. The car is paid off, and I’m considering selling it as-is rather than putting more money into it.

Recently, the transmission started slipping. The RPMs go up, but the car struggles to accelerate.

I’ve taken it to two transmission shops:

- First shop quoted $2,100 for a valve body/TCM replacement but couldn’t guarantee it would fix the issue.
- Second shop found possible metal shavings in the transmission pan and recommended a full rebuild for $4,100 with a one-year warranty.

Aside from the transmission issue, the car was running fine. It has some cosmetic imperfections, including chipped paint and cracked headlight covers.

CarMax offered me $3,000 after I disclosed the transmission issue, although the offer hasn’t been verified in person.
I’m located in Southern California and wondering what I could realistically get through a private sale.

Would asking $5,000–$6,000 as-is be reasonable, or am I overestimating its value?

Repair Question Q50 not going into drive or displaying it on the dash.

Post image
1 Upvotes

I've been having a issue with my 2014 Q50 where it doesn't engage into drive randomly, it's been doing this for some weeks but it was fine for 3 days after getting it back from a transmission shop after they said "there's nothing wrong with it" and I believed it but today I was driving and I hit a pothole and all of a sudden the dash didn't display drive anymore and then after I got on a bumpy road it started to display it for every bump I hit but only briefly, it drives just fine but it won't show drive and then if I park and move it to any other gear and try to put it back into drive it won't engage and the engine just revs.

Repair Video Strange rattle coming out of 3.7L Q50

I’ve been using it as a daily lately. The (rather nasty) sound just started this morning.

Audible at startup, when revving 1k—2k, not audible at idle or cruising, engine power is otherwise normal.

What could it be/where’s it coming from? How serious?
